Jumping and Picking up Objects in FNV

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 2:17 pm

Jumping in Fallout 3 is fun, especially for climbing rocks and off of bridges into the water below. Picking up and organizing objects is a nice diversion, but the question is, will they be used to their full extent in terms of gameplay in Fallout New Vegas?

Excluding rocks, How often did you find platforming elements to make good use of the jumping for missions, and what did you use the lifting objects for during missions?

I'll defend these abilities by saying, jumping is always welcome. Just play Mass Effect and see how "not jumping" dampens the fun. Especially on the moon of all places... Picking up stuff, I've organized all the grocery carts and stocked all the lit shelves in the Super Duper Mart with food items, and even ground up the raiders and put them into the meat bins, as the bot patrols the store.

The point is, what new ways could FNV implement these two great abilities during missions or gameplay, so they're more useful? And what ways do you find them useful in Fallout 3?

Would be nice with some death-holes you'd have to jump over.
Maybe inside a building 5 stories up there is a hole down to the bottom floor in the middle of the fifth floor where you have to jump over.
It's not much but it would make use of the jump function.
But I actually found it to be really great when meeting rad-scorpions.
For the smaller one's I'd jump around so they couldn't hit me and with the bigger one's I'd jump up on something when I was boxed in and jump over it and high-tail it outta there.

But I don't think it's very necessary to make anything more of them.
You can pick up stuff and arrange them to your liking and you can jump if you want to.
That's all there is to it really.
Doesn't need to be any more complex than that.

Why are you trying to get rid of features? We like jumping, we like leaning, we like crouching, and we like going prone. We like a full range of mobility. It's because of people like you that we have games were you press 1 button, and depending on the circumstance, the GAME does things for you. Complain about the fact that Fallout 3 didn't have any climbable ladders next time (although, this is a flaw with the engine).

As for your question, I used jumping to avoid going into water and also to jump over small obstacles while running around.

well, FO3, jumping and picking up objects, as you say were novelties. there wasnt much point to them as everywhere you went was accesible by walking :/ and picking up objects was more how you say, discouraged since public areas the moment you pick up a pencil or empty bottle you get shot at >_>. a greater range of mobility and the practicality of them would be very refreshing...alas I dont think that has changed....

I have the habit of randomly jumping around for no reason. You can blame Oblivion and Morrowind for that.

Not sure who you're aiming at, but I'm suggesting new ways they could further make use of these two great features.

One example already stated, jumping over or onto platforms to access areas inaccessible unless you jump up there. Maybe create an entire building where this is useful. Maybe there's a way to "upgrade" your jumping, like in Oblivion.

And for picking stuff up, maybe they could create a mission where you have to manually carry or drag a body all the way back to a certain location as part of the mission requirements, all the while defending yourself, then picking the body back up.

Hopefully Jumping will never be taken out, I have played games without it, and it is no fun.

However Picking things up? That's fine, but what I want is to be able to put things back down.

The "Physics" and the Clipping boundaries make it real hard to place objects just where you want them to be. I have done this so many times to line up a some stuff on a shelf or table, only to put down the last item and get a Physics Explosion that knocks everything all over the room.

But the people attacking the PC would probably break the body. :(

I kind of disliked the system for picking things up. You could only pick it up by one point and it would rotate freely along that set of axes. That made moving things around in my Megaton House a real pain. It would be nice if you could use the face buttons while you're holding an object to rotate it. It did get kind of screwy when you could telepathically throw objects across the room, but throwing bodies off of buildings with your mind was also pretty cool. I don't see any problems with the jumping. I used to jump around all the time. There were places where you had to jump from plank to plank or up desks to get through a hole in the ceiling. It was also useful for getting over rocks across the Potomac and getting over tripwires.

Jumping makes going up and down on a slope/stair much faster for one. I would also go crazy if i was to make a detour everytime i encounter something at knee hight. (like a fence for example)

I think going super mario and allow us to kill super mutants by jumping on their head would be a cool extra feature.... you can even make a new skill for it ^^

Eh...who said anything about getting rid of features? Op is suggesting and would like suggestions about new ways to implement these features. Am I missing something here?

@op can you throw things? Its pretty bizarre that you can shoot missile launchers but you can't throw something. In the elder scrolls iv you can pick up all these miscellaneous objects but you can't throw them?

Repeat after me:

IT.IS.NOT.THE.ENGINE.

Climbing a ladder is just an animation/collision matter.

As for the grabbing part: there's usually loot under dead NPC and other movable stuff that you have to move in order to get the loot.

Loot under an eliminated npc? I've only ever got loot from an eliminated npc not under.

it would've been cool to pick up objects like trash can lids or dead bodies to use for cover but what ever you did pick up just flopped around in mid air so it looked awkward and not to useful. and it was a pain in the ass to try to recreate the chess board with the little liquor bottles

Thats fine I guess
but I really don't want missions that require jumping

The one thing I hate of all games is making precision jumps
where I spend 5 minutes trying to jump on a ledge cause I'm doing it wrong
or mis-time a jump, fall 5000 feet and have to start over

Howard explained the primary reason for not being able to include ladders into environments is due to their engine, saying ladders caused problems for character AI.

The engine is old, its age is showing. The engine has problems, and a lot of the reasons things happen/don't happen IS because of the engine.

I say when you pick something up you should be able to spin the object so you can put things facing the ways you want the too.(i dont know what butting you can use with this.Maybe while picking up something and holding the left trigger you could spin it into the direction you want with the right stick)

i've found both jumping and picking up objects extremely useful for fo3.
i would like more obvious ways of using it. most of fo3's use of these were hidden.
mostly it was loot in a box behind something and you had to pull out the box just to be able to see inside it.
or loot hidden under a trash lid, or a box upside down.
but being able to pick something up for cover would be nice (the was a mod for that in fo3 by the way)
or better loot hidden in areas only accessible from a hard jump.

I don't know if that is joke or what, but if it were true, NPCs wouldn't be able to go up stairs. I'd love to have a coder tell me what are these AI issues this guy is talking about.

Some stairs are just ramps, as far as the AI is concerned (there's a collision mesh that's just a slanted plane hitting the corners of each step); the others are low enough that the AI can handle them (the individual steps are low, I mean). And NPCs do have problems with stairs quite often.

EDIT: for example, Jollring in TES IV: Oblivion. About 30% of the time when he's leading you to Umbacano's room, he gets stuck at the base of the stairs. I think there might be some improvements to this in Fallout 3, but it's still an issue inherent to the game engine.
