Save Game, Save Game.

Explore, don't Fast Travel.

Save coin for House! (gives you a place to store gear, smithing mats, whatever)

My four words of power are: stay off the forums, habitual spoilers appear in alot of topics nowadays.

Prepare to have fun!

Seriously, though:

- Save for a house. They're great.
- Followers will piss you off royally due to the AI - but keep them, they're helpful.
- Don't dismiss the non-fighter classes (e.g. archery). They work much better than Oblivion.
- It's a great game. Like, really really great.

Welcome to the forums. Have a http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg

Skyrim's very stable but not everyone is having that experience even though most people are and since I don't know what system you are on....from Oblivion, you already know...

"Save often, different slots."

Some advice more specific to Skyrim would be:

"Level slowly, more fun."

It's an awesome game and I'm having a blast, now at Level 39. I didn't get to play yesterday so today I'll be in Skyrim! Have a great time!!!!

Buy cure disease potions
Don't shout in towns.
enchant everything you sell

And most important :
Don't level too fast

(at highest levels the game is no longer interesting)

"Place Steam in Offline" (mode) -- to avoid It deciding to update the game at will making you wait until the 200+MB download completes to play
"Backup entire Game Folder" -- to have a replacement when Steam decides to update patch even when in Offline mode killing your game
"Avoid Patching Until Patched" -- wait to patch until others test the patch and they release a patch to fix the problems their patch introduces

Be careful adding mods at this stage. They can bork up your game

buy a house ASAP

don't piss off Daedra

DID is your friend

moonsugar is your friend

skooma is your friend

and finally

DON'T join the Imperials

edit: Best advice in this thread

"Avoid Patching Until Patched" -- wait to patch until others test the patch and they release a patch to fix the problems their patch introduces
