Little rant about courier's invincibility

Post » Mon May 30, 2011 9:49 pm

At best the Courier is able to take out entire cities alone. It breaks the immersion pretty badly. For example I get sent to deal with the King and Pacer by ncr. Ofcourse he tries to tell me that if I do some little work for him, he will cease the violence against ncr. Excuse me? I've taken out dozens of deathclaws, killed everyone in BoS bunker and legion camps (Nelson, Cottonwood). Who is this puny man to tell me what to do? If he doesn't do as I say, I'll just shoot him, it doesn't matter that I'm surrounded by his men, I'll kill them too. If there's gonna be more violence against ncr, I'll find the ones responsible and shoot them aswell. I'll kill the whole freeside if necessary. It seems that the npcs don't quite realize who they are talking to or how deep danger they are when dealing with the Courier.

This eventually led me to stop playing. The courier isn't some very capable agent who everyone wants at their side, but a similar force as ncr or the legion, just ten times more stronger.

Do you Play on hardcoe? Doesnt sound like it. Raise the freakin difficulty. The courier isnt some blood thirsty psychopath thats why he is willing to do little things for people. (Unless you play him as a Blood Thirsty Psychopath in which case I retract my previous statement)

The ability to reload is what gives the courier their strength mostly and the fact that you know everything that is going to happen if you are on your 2nd-infinite playthrough. So you have one heck of an advantage over everyone else

And how many times did you have to save/reload? If your courier is sooooo amazing, you must not have had to reload a save game once. How much chems are you dependent on? Try doing all that stuff without any chems (including stimpaks) and we'll see how 'invincible' you are. There are several other reasons that can also blast apart your mindless dribble, but I don't feel like wasting my time any further.

Well I gotta say, I give your trolling efforts a 4 out of 10. Nice try.

5+ MK1 securitrons on hard core normal with my DT at 30+ and a melee character killing them in one to two hits can take my health down to a bar.

If I take guns and sneak with a high dam weapon I can take less damage, due to staying at range.

Try taking on first recon at McCarran, try taking on three ranger vets with deathclaw health, DT 40 and Brush guns and sequas, then try it with melee at level 16 with mid teir weapons.

You can be a god in NV, but usually it's god with a gun who sneaks around alot.

I thought people would agree that courier is way too strong for one man. I play the game with hardest difficulty and have tried to search some difficulty-raising mods to keep the immersion. I don't mean to brag here, just point out how way out of place the courier's capabilities are.

I had both on.

He might not be a psycho, but if he's capable of taking out entire towns some crime boss should know his place and just do as told unless he wants to die.

What about the chems? The npcs are free to use them too. About reloading, I really didn't need it when killing stuff but when something went wrong. Like in a situation where some bug messes up my quest.

I'm confused... Are you angry that NPC's don't know that you're capable of killing them? Maybe you should go toe-to-toe with a group of Deathclaws using only your fists or a baseball bat... That'll show any player how frail they are.

Now why would I do that? Do you hunt bears and lions with baseball bat? Think not. Deathclaws are just dangerous animals but no match for guns. Nothing special about them actually.

I do believe you are confusing the Lone Wanderer with the Courier, And are playing on normal or easy.

Alright, I'll continue with more reasons as to why your OP is BS. Reputation keeps track of how much of a psycho killer you are. When you go to wipe out the legion, did they not know what you were capable of after you become Vilified (which only takes killing a few legionaries to get to. I've done it.) Can you take down the entire Fort without having to reload? (the fact that you say that the ONLY time you reload is when a bug occurs is straight up BS.) I want to see you walk into Caesar's tent being Vilified and see how long you last against numerous Ballistic fists to the face? I would also like to see how well you would be able to take down an assassin team at a low level when the assassin team has a static level far beyond the low-levels.

So what you're saying is that you're only as dangerous as the weapons you're using?

Try not having like a 45 in DT, and carrying 200 stimpacks. You won't feel so invincible then. I just got my ass handed to me from a few fiends. All I have is a bounty hunter duster, a cowboy repeater, and some healing powder. Of coarse the game isn't a challenge if you load yourself up with all the best stuff lol.

When I entered caesar's tent, I took turbo and avenger with ap ammo did the rest. The assasin team got stuck in a high hill and I sniped them from higher ground.
You're right when you suspected that I had used reload, ofcourse I did but honestly not so often when it came to combat. But still, the courier did do everything you did ingame no matter the reloads. Every feature in the game is at courier's disposal. If abusing them all without any moderation leads courier becoming a god of war, then don't blame or judge the player. The game itself has to set limits to the courier's abilities.

That's kinda a problem with all video games. You sort of have to be the toughest around, else you wouldn't be able to do the heroic things that you do.
As for NPCs not recognizing. Well, technology is limited, and there's only so much you can do. Besides, how would the game be if everyone just bent over backwards because you've taken out hundreds of mutated animals, pre-war robots, and trained fighters before the,?

It does have limits, You just use everything you possibly can to BECOME invincible, So maybe, How about, Don't use Intense Training, Don't use drugs, Don't use Implants, And play like that if you think you are a god.

Logically speaking, you're totally right – but, like most narrative video games, this character follows "action movie logic." It makes no sense that a washed-up old cop can take on a building of terrorists alone in Die Hard, or that a ragtag group of misfit hackers can take on a bunch of superpowered computer programs in The Matrix, or that a single martial artist can take on an army of ninjas in just about every martial arts movie ever made ... but that's the sort of genre cliche now. For additional examples in gaming of single heroes against impossible odds, see Splinter Cell, Mass Effect, and Super Mario Brothers.

All of that said, it definitely feels more challenging and a little more realistic when you leave Endurance at 1, take the Small Frame (and either Fast Shot or Kamikaze) trait, and only wear clothing instead of armor. I'm still getting crippled regularly in fights at level 24!

Hey now... Die Hard was a great movie. John McClane is (one of) my hero(es). He was pretty human in the first movie and only attained "action movie hero" status in the subsequent movies (Live Free Or Die Hard being the prime example of that).

Make a game with realistic difficulty and you'll have kids whining everywhere "my character can't take 10 full-fledged commandos with a switchblade this game svcks blah blah". Sorry, it's just the business strategy these days. Games gotta be easier than flipping an omelette.

Oh, I totally agree. Favorite action hero ever. This does bring up an interesting point, though: In the movies, it's a lot easier to show a flawed character who takes a real beating before finally, just barely achieving victory. You just write it that way, and don't let him die. In video games, to achieve that level of nail-biting "will he make it?" suspense, developers kind of rely on the actual threat of character death ... which means some players are going to die a lot and get frustrated, and some players are going to feel invincible. It's tough to design for that thin line of "just barely surviving against all odds."

Realism probably wouldn't be fun?

At least it would require a vastly different game.
Take one shot and very likely you are down, if you are lucky you can take a couple more, but god forbid if there isn't an ambulance rushing to you to get you to the closest hospital ASAP.
Where you will spend the next couple of weeks.
