Looking for Open world pc games.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:42 am

I am really into open world rpg games, other than Rome Total war 5 years ago that is all I play. Unfortunately there are not that many. I am now broadening my horizons and checking out open world action/adventure games in addition to rpgs, here is what I have played/will play so far:

Bethesdas sandbox rpgs(duh!).
Gothic 3 Enhanced Edition
Risen
Two Worlds 2

Assassins Creed 2 & Brotherhood(will play)

I only have pc, so no console games please(I would love to play Red Dead).

I want recent(whiten last 4 years or so) games that are high quality. I am willing to give rpgs more leeway as that is what I prefer, but action-adventure games only the best, no fps unless there is heavy rpg elements(hell any open world game I want should have lots of rpg elements, like Assassins Creed does).
Please no kinda sorta, its got one level thats open, kind of games.

NO MODERN settings for non rpgs, I don't want to play Grand Theft Auto for this reason.

Single player only, no MMOs.

Red Dead Redemption? I dont know if its PC but it might qualify as modern to you, its set in the wild west. The only other open world game I can think of that you have not mentioned is the Far Cry series but those are modern, you got all the "non-modern" rpgs I can think of.

Does Mount and Blade count? It's not really open world...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl or Call of Pripyat <--- They're FPS, but have RPG elements (inventory management, loot, dialogue, sidequests, factions you can ally with or fight against)

Umm... I'll look for more and then edit this post if I find some matching your description (that past 4 years part makes it hard for me :P).

This is difficult. Compared to a lot of other genres, open world RPG fans are a wee bit underserved. (We're better off than space combat sim fans though.)

I can think of a number of retro open world RPGs you might want to take for a spin.

Dark Lands
http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot/features/all/greatestgames/p-45.html

Set in historical Germany, Dark Lands is one of the games that inspired the first Elder Scrolls.

Ultima VII
http://exult.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php

My favorite Ultima game, and again probably one of the titles to inspire The Elder Scrolls. The depth was previously unheard of. You could do everything from bake bread to ride a horse and carriage. It's playable very well on a modern PC using interpretive engine EXULT. This was probably the first game I ever played to feature characters that run their own lives. Like an early Radiant AI.

Albion
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/albion/index.html

An extremely creative and unique RPG. This game seamlessly blended birds-eye view exploration with first person view. It takes place after you crash land your spaceship on an alien planet inhabited by cat-like people. Another one of my favorites.

Edit:
Oh. I see you said "recent." Forget that. You know you want to play these games anyway.

99% of these games listed aren't open world. Fable isn't, at all. You're entirely limited to ONLY the very linear paths. Same with alot of those xD

The Baldur's Gate saga.

Fallout 1 and 2. (Unless it fits in your "Modern" category :P )

Okay just noticed you wanted recent. Heh
Anyway, those four games are some of the top of the lines RPGs from the early 2000s.

If you don't mind some "Hack n slash" GTA style, go with Prototype. It's as open world as it gets, with alot to do.

Although set in a modern setting, you really should check out Just Cause 2. IIRC, the world is 400 square miles. And it's a lot of fun.

Mount & Blade is open world and the mounted combat is cool.

But it quickly becomes boring because there is no story and the quests are moronic.

Its says in the title open world PC games. Red Dead is the #1 game I want thats not for pc(actully its the only game I want not for pc). I love historical settings.

Old. Gothic 3 Enhanced is pretty good.

Darn I guess I have to keep searching myself. Please I know you guys are trying to help but unless you know what you are talking about(and read the whole post) don't respond.

What about the game Scared 2, I read it has a big open world and its an rpg, yet reviews did not define it as a sandbox or open world game. Why?

You know, if you wern't so pushy and aggressive about it perhaps more people would be inclined to help you. Also, why modern games? Are you seriously more worried over graphics than gameplay as an apparent "RPG Fan"... Anyway I urge you to try some of the older games, seriously, they're better than any recent ones. Namely look into the Summoner series. You're welcome.

Gothic 4?

No, no, no. It's not good, it's not open world. The previous Gothic titles though are highly recommended. Especially G2 with its expansion pack. With texture mods they even look half-decent by today's standards. Limiting yourself to "recent" titles can only do harm.

Sacred 2 is a hack&slash game like Diablo. That's why people don't call it an open world RPG, even if it is the only one I know with an open and pre-defined world.

I think Beth is the only company that makes true open world RPGs.

Old. Gothic 3 Enhanced is pretty good.

2002 is too old? Well good luck, you ain't finding anything newer.

Not entirely. There are tonnes of open world RPGs out there, be they older and some new. Most are now MMO's however, as it hits a wider audience than just single player games. Though i personally love single player games.

I will look toward space games if I were you. Especially Space Rangers 2. The world is large enough to be considered as open world, very immersive, RPG, a bit of FPS if you want else RTS, very smooth gameplay, one of the only game with sickness. It has a major issue: once you go inside, you never leave, it's bloody addictive.
For me, it's almost all a game should be.

Beggars can't be choosers. There's few open world games out there at all who are any good.

Oh well, guess there is really not much out there for me. I don't like older games that do not have todays modern polish, I use to play out games when I was more "hardcoe" but not I can only tolerate more recent polished games.

You mean "polished" as in "of current generation graphics"? Your namesake would be rolling his eyes and stomping around madly, you know. ^_^

Well then I suggest you just go with the Assassins Creed series and Red Dead Redemption. Both are fantastic games from beginning to end, and have the graphics of your preference.
