Looks like 1.5 is out

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 12:13 am

This same thing happened to me, sooooo sick of Steam forcing me to update one way or the other. Just wanted to play Skyrim unpatched until some things like Widescreen Fixer and SKSE get updated for the patch. Now I get to sit around and wait while not able to play.
I hate Steam with a passion. There is no support whatsoever for users with a slow internet connection.

And you guys are serious? Bethesda have updated the game with something which will drastically decrease performance on low-end machines, yet don't have an option to disable it?

I do not have strong positive feelings towards Bethesda right now. . .

Oh well. I won't find out I can't play until I've left my computer on for 4 days straight. .

Someone else with the underwater visuals NOT working properly. I still have a bright view when going underwater, and then I cant see nothing.
A lot of people have been having that problem. Just go in your Documents folder to your Skyrim prefs ini and change bDoDepthofField to 0 and you will be able to see underwater.

Hmm i don't notice any decrease in performance with my machine w/c i might say isn't high end only at M/M setting, also haven't had any issues with underwater visuals so far and still crossing my fingers.

Aside from that i'm loving the new kill cams!

Thanks, well i can see now, but everything is bright as being just outside of the water, just the water surface above me is different. I can see everything in any distance.
Should there be underwater blurrr? Some underwater visuals?

PS:

I can see your frustration but in fairness - (and correct me if I'm wrong) - you're talking about an aftermarket addition to a game versus an official release. Is the official release supposed to cater for every aftermarket addition? I don't think so.

I noticed a slight fps drop in grassy areas. Like many others, I would like an option to turn this feature off. Kill cams should also be optional. Personally I like them, but I can see why others don't.

Steam shut down my game, then steam crashed, then I had to verify cache. Hardly the most user friendly way of updating your game lol
Steam never shuts down your game.

Of course. And additionally breaking Nvidia's brilliant support for AO is just fair as well. Skyrim over all?

Pls forgive me. But i have the impression the delta team moved onward to another project, and the beta team struggles with the updates.
The underwater transition is..well..amateurish? I was referring to Liquid Water 2.0 and Morrowind SOG underwater shader.
But this only makes me appreciate the modders work much more. I wasn't aware of how expertized they are actually.
I am scratching my head why these "modders" are still working as kind of a free market team with incredible results,
while Bethesda is to choose their programmers on different preliminaries?

100% agree, Kill cams should be optional and the option to turn them off should be in the next patch. If Fallout 3/New Vegas can turn off the cinematic VAT kill cam shots then why can't Skyrim turn off their own kill cam finishers.

Yes. Why should that seem unreasonable in this context?
Nvidia support the cards, Bethesda support the game - undoubtedly they do work together up to a point but equally...

As well you should because they are Awesome and they do amazing things.

It's not a mystery - the modders can do what they do precisely BECAUSE they are not part of a commercial organisation. Bethesda has to operate according to different parameters. It's not their "fault" - it is because they are a commercial organisation, simple as.

So, you say, commerce is breaking innovation and perfection in terms of usability and customer demands?

(bangs head on desk) Steam does have some benefits to it and I'm not exactly a hater, but I seriously dislike how difficult it is to avoid an automatic update. I didn't realize a new patch was even near ready til I tried to play the game and SKSE exploded.

Just go to Steam and select Off-line mode, you'll never have another patch installed unless you change it back.

It is what it is mate, but it's still not Bethesda's fault.

You know, it was just Skyrim doing yet another crash to desktop, not Steam closing it forcibly which it never does.

What if you are in the middle of playing Skyrim and the patch is released? Does it wait for you to exit game and install upon next start up, or download while your playing?

Steam in it's current form cannot download a patch to apply it later and it will never dare apply a patch on a game that is running either. It's a little annoying at times but myself, I'm incredibly short on HDD space and this setup is actually the most space efficient so it's not that bad.

I love the new underwater graphics effects. Not only is the transition while diving underwater better, there is now a depth of field effect so distant underwater objects like ships, rocks and flora are blurred, there is a ripple effect if you look at the sky while underwater too. This is actually the same stuff shown in the gamejam video, which makes me suspect we will get even more graphical upgrades like SSAO eventually in later patches.

As for performance, my average FPS seemed to drop by 1-2 in some outside areas like Riverwood (probably due to grass shadows). It was unchanged in cities like Whiterun, Markarth etc. Doesn't bother me much since I can't really distinguish between ~58 FPS and ~56 FPS without fraps.

It will wait until you quit the game, then begin to download the patch. It won't download while you're playing, because it would be attempting to modify and replace files that are currently in use...which Windows won't allow last I checked. Even if it did, that would just end terribly.

So it's my enb that is causing the water to be too clear now? Didn't really have a problem with 1.5 until now. Don't screw with my enb Bethesda. Make my dragons fly backwards, break my magic resistance, and I will still forgive you in the end. Screw up my enb and then we have a problem.

The reason I ask is that I play my game off an SSD, but it's junctioned to the install in my Steam directory, so I have to copy updates over manually...

What are you using to create that junction? I use http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.htmland when any Steam game updates on the HDD, the SSD is what is updated. I never have to copy anything after an update.

Humblest apologies for yet another probably stupid question but:

If you have previously downloaded the beta 1.5 patch do I assume that the actual 1.5 patch doesn't get downloaded? Because it hasn't, is all...

Mine just "revoked" the beta, and made it official. The only official 1.5 download I got was the Creation Kit.
