Looting/Inventory System; also, loot stashes

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:02 am

Hopefully they will cut on the number of containers. I prefer quantity to quality, so instead of mindless copypasta of zingillion junk crates they could place few containers with valuable loot in not so easy to find/spot places. THAT is what I actually call an effort that will earn you something, plus the aspect of exploration is endlessly more interesting and fun for me than "hey-oh... ANOTHER ten crates to look through! *rolls eyes*".

I remember that the junk inside most of the containers is one of the things that really made Fallout 3 boring for me quite fast. Who in their right mind would store junk and for what? Not to mention, remember, that the world is 200 years after the post-apocalyptic events. That is ALOT of time, think about it. Most of the junk would be gone, especially in inhabitated areas.

Post-apocolypia is made of junk! Junk and improvisation is what make post-apocalypia tick.

You're correct in that the system wasn't *perfect*. But it was still less nauseating and less redundant and less time-consuming to get a list of items that you could scroll through than having to manually click into an endless supply of crates.

You're making a mountain out of a mole hill, here Will.
If it's that bad for you then surely it must be a chore for you to loot bodies as well? The crates are optional. Don't like them? Don't look in them.

It's more realistic this way....which in the end is what all videogames really ae working towards....

*snip*

Well, if it's "realism" that we're after (and by the way "realism" does not always = fun), then the devs should do away with "fast travel". The predominant argument on here for why "fast travel" is more fair than "fast looting" is that once someone has been to a place, they shouldn't have to manually meander through it again. But I call bull[censored] on that argument, and here's why: just because you've been somewhere before doesn't mean that bandits or other mobs couldn't suddenly show up while you're passing through. Look at the original Fallout games--fast travel on its own did not make one immune to ambushes and random encounters which would interrupt fast travel. Sure, there was an Explorer skill that you could *earn* to minimize such encounters, but it didn't work 100% of the time, and if you didn't have the skill, then fast travel could get interrupted a lot. In Fallout 3, there are no interruptions to fast travel, which is arguably unrealistic. So when someone argues that having an option to pick up/sort loot faster is somehow "cheating" and unrealistic, whereas somehow automatically avoiding ambushes is not, that's just hypocritical.

Tell me, what would be the most likely scenario if a bunch of bandits were to spot a lone individual (or even a smaller group) lugging a bunch of loot across the wasteland? Would they say "oh, they're in fast travel mode, guess we gotta leave them alone"? Unlikely. They'd descend like a plague of locusts. Same with a hungry predator spotting someone dragging 300lbs worth of crap across the desert. "Hmmm... that tasty morsel is moving pretty slowly, and I'm hungry. Uh-oh, it's in fast travel mode--guess I can't eat it!" Oh please, come on!

Any pirate would tell you that the challenge in acquiring loot isn't just finding/taking it, but *keeping* it. Otherwise, why so many buried treasure stashes? Anyone NOT being a near-sighted hypocrite who is in favor of a fast travel option must also be in favor of a "fast looting" option, for those who want to use either. I'm not against special containers (safes, desks, etc) that need some kind of skill to lockpick or whatever to get into for more valuable items--I enjoy the challenge. But the endless crates lying around everywhere full of junk just make things more repetitive than they need to be, not to mention this many hundreds of years after wooden crates were made would undoubtedly mean they had since turned to sawdust, but I digress...

If they're truly meant to be optional, then I'd be happy enough with a button I could click on the settings menu to simply remove them from my game. Then I wouldn't feel like I'm possibly missing anything, and they wouldn't be cluttering up my screen...

Meh! Please include even moar stuff to scavenge and loot. It's an integral part of the game.

Do you really think that anybody who doesn't see things from your point of view has "a closed mind"? I think that it is you who has a closed mind.

Right, because other people calling me "lazy", telling me to "take a hike", and claiming my suggestion is "insulting" are all the classic hallmarks of an open mind, right?

Sounds like you want a rather empty and clean game world, champ. You have fun with that. My suggestion: Deal with it. It's never going to happen the way you want it to. I'd put money on it.

When your idea is so offensive, what can we do? I mean, I'm open minded, but there's just some things that are unacceptable.

Prior Fallout games were fine in that regard.

lol, self-contradict much?

And I don't see a valid refutation of my fast travel vs fast looting comparison, so I guess that means either that you now see the logic of it or else you can't come up with a non-hypocritical counter-argument?

I think you're just picking arguements, to be frankly honest. Your idea is crap, and I know Rohugh is gonna cane me for saying that, and you know it.

That's not a counter-argument, so I take that to mean you can't counter the logic.

Hey, I'm fine with even more useful stuff, as long as there's also some useless junk around. That makes finding the good stuff more rewarding.

Sure, but the useless junk probably wouldn't be kept in containers meant for more useful things, but would instead be scattered around on the ground or whatever. And a lot of those wooden crates and barrels and stuff wouldn't likely be in one piece anymore anyway, not after hundreds of years exposed to the elements and other looters, vermin, etc, so the stuff in them would still likely be on the ground.

It's not about countering logic, or making points. It's a disagreement based on the fact that my personal opinion finds you dillusional in your suspicion that Fast Looting or whatever term you want to use for the mockery of human thought would even come close to being a feasible and accepted idea.

Riiiiiiiiight.... Because *you're* the living embodiment of intellectual excellence, and the ultimate authority on what makes a game fun?

By the way, the spelling is "delusional".

EDIT: oh, and just in case English is not your native language, I was not intending to be insulting on that second point.

Can we get back to having a civil discussion please? We wouldn't want this thread to be locked. That means no name calling.

And as I recall I never called you lazy. Nor did I say that I thought that your idea is complete crap. I don't like it, but I don't think it's crap. It's you viewpoint, I just don't agree with it.

And I was not referring to you when I mentioned people with closed minds. If you go back and look at the post mentioning such, it should become apparent I was referring to someone else (you may have to go back and read their posts as well).

Oh dear, having looked through the last part of this topic I am leaving it closed as it has just run into petty arguments. You know what they say "If you can't play nicely ..............."
