I wonder why they chose mathew perry as the voice of benny ?("hey man,i got 5 kids to feed!" lol), did one of the creators or maybe all of them watch every episode of friends without and then with commentary. i played threw the first time not knowing mathew perry was the voice and when my friend told me all i could think of was the airport scene on harold and kumar go to guantanamo bay, " who you calling mathew perry [censored] ?!?!?!

Erm... some people... actually like Matthew Perry because he's pretty catchy.

Most people who -don't- like him... seem to be the same people who have some grudge against Friends... which, while not my favorite show, even -I-... the supporter of Enclave-fueled Genocide... found his role to be quite funny and amicable.

So... I'm guessing they just really liked his voice for the part... or... were a fan of him in movies... or yeah, maybe some of them even liked Friends.

But... I don't really get why you feel the need to ask...

I mean... if you're just curious, sure... but it's not like Matthew Perry isn't a name people know...

Benny is voiced by Matthew Perry of Friends fame who appeared on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show and related that he'd played Fallout 3 so much that he's injured his hands. He presented Ellen a copy of the game saying, "I played this video game so often that I injured my hand so severely that I had to go to a hand doctor and get injections in my hand because I love this video game so much. The game is called Fallout 3. I'm not affiliated with this game at all, I just love it. But I signed it, so it looks like I created it."

Apparently, Obsidian and Betheseda were impressed enough to offer him the job.

Probably because he loved Fallout 3.

After a while... I actually found myself -talking- like Benny.

He really gives off that casino/rat pack vibe... y'know?

I never watched Friends. I know the actor though.

I was unimpressed by his voice acting. It seemed so... dull. There wasn't any feeling or energy there. Is that just how Benny was supposed to be? I don't know. But Mr. Perry's VA was definitely sub-par compared to others who worked on this.

Hey, Zone, nice nod to Total Recall.

I think it's supposed to be that way.

He's not so over-the-top as some of the other characters... he's more of a nod to Sinatra than anything else. The tone in his voice, the way he talks, the way he walks... it's all very Rat Pack, sing\songy kind of melodic tones. But it's not loud. It's just... deliberately even.

He does seem a little muted compared to some of the other folks in the game... but... I try to believe that that was the way they wanted him to be.

And I think it works for Benny. He's just this guy, dig? A guy... with a suit... and a gun named Maria.

He did great work. Fits the role, reads it well. I don't get what your problem is. I actually enjoy having more famous people as actors than typical anonymous guys. Trejo and Day especially since I like them a lot outside of the whole gaming thing - so it's nice to hear them.

I thought he did a good job, cool and understated, ya dig? :P Especially considering the way he talks in his most famous role - I got to admit, I was half expecting a reference ("could this place be any more irradiated?") - so glad it wasn't in there.

I don't mean to come across as a mathew perry/chandler HATER, i watched friends and his movie roles and when i found out who voiced benny i decided never to kill him again first time i did because he shot me in the head obviously " guys got it coming " but i was always on the fence of killing him, Benny is the only guy in the game i wanted to lead/follow his ideas and way of speaking made me wanna be around him but i didn't wanna be some pathetic guy who lets a guy shoot him in head and then be his friend so i killed the guy.

i wondered why mathew perry because his voice just doesn't spell enemy for me, kinda like seymour hoffman in MI3. mathews voice is not very scum baggy if a police officer told me the man who shot me was mathew perry i would tell him to double check. i think the ghoul comedian at the wrangler was gonna be MP's character but they changed at the last second to benny.

did anyone actually use his suit and maria ? they went straight into my hotel room.

plus did anyone else want Ciaran Hinds to voice ceasar ? i did so bad, but julius's voice never came.

I'm a big fan of the voice acting and I liked Matthew Perry's work a lot. I think maybe I couldn't do Benny in at first is because it was Matthew Perry. I think I'm over that now though...sorry Matthew, you're going down. :D

It's important for them to keep a pretty even tone of voice or we'd be getting over-excited comments in the wrong places with our speech choices. There's one of those in Oblivion that just grates on me every time I check the highlighted speech option so I prefer it this way. Even, measured tones with the tiniest of inflections to keep it interesting. That's got to be really hard to do. :::applause::: for them all.

I am in the camp of the people who hate Friends. Well, let's say that I never got the appeal. However I have like almost everything Perry did away from Friends.

Now, the mark of a good voice actor is when I can't tell who the actor is when I listen to them. James Earl Jones may be a great voice actor, but you know it is him as soon as he utters the first syllable. We all knew that Shrek was Mike Myers, Glenn Close was Cruella Deville (but she was a good Cruella). So, to that end, Perry did a good job with Benny. Until this thread I did not know Matthew Perry did the voice acting for Benny.

Also, when interacting with Benny, the acting led me to look for a peaceful solution* as I started to actually understand why he did what he did and I was willing to give him the benifit of the doubt when he told me his side of what happened. If the voice acting had svcked, I would not have felt any empathy.

*I only said I looked for the peaceful solution, I did not say I used it.

I didnt realise Matthew Perry was Benny's voice :)

Allot of famous actors in there isnt there, Michael Dorn from Star Trek Next Gen. & Kris Kristofferson etc.. interesting to see them in the sound booth doing the voices i recognise from the game :fallout:

As other say, it is done deliberately so even when the courier find he there is enough reason not to kill him.

I do want an Benny ending which I got shot in the head (again).

why Mathew Perry

He went on Oprah and mentioned that he'd damaged his thumbs playing Fallout 3 and had to get some kind of injections in them as treatment.

They worked him in. (The "making of" dvd says they approached him.)

Yes, lets completely forget about the guy who voices characters like Motor-Runner, THAT GUY SPEAKS IN MONOTONE. HE NEVER FLUXUATES IN TONE. :brokencomputer:

I thought he did a great job. I don't see why you think he's monotonous. I couldn't see the character being THAT excited, ya know? He wouldn't be smooth like smooth little babies if he was jumping around all gleefully.

Honestly I think Benny is one of the best voice-acted characters in the game. Maybe in any game in recent memory for me.

Actually overall FO:NV hit it out of the park with the voice acting. Mr. New Vegas is a very rare miss for them, but the main quest NPCs were just done great. Ceasar was brilliant, Benny was hilarious and gave off the perfect vibe, even little throwaway NPCs like James Garret were done just great.
