Morrowind after Skyrim.

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 3:43 pm

Only played Morrowind a little.. then oblivion came out, and now skyrim... fact is i never fully "got into" Morrowind.. and now it seems less likely due to the graphics when you compare to skyrim...

Is it worth playing?
would you go back to morrowind after skyrim?

Good graphics and fully voice acted = Skyrim
RPG experience and pretty much everything else = Morrowind.

Thats the thing, i like the idea about skyrim, being a theif is more "interesting" as everything has worth, the lore, the storyline, the no quest marker thing where you have to work it out! .. and of course, Bloodmoon Hiricine... Buuuut, i don't wanna repurchase it just to think "meh, graphics.. not playing" ... thats all that worries me lol.

Morrowind is a great game storywise and i'd recommend it to anyone, that said it will likely feel rather dated and clunky compared to skyrim. i'd say go with it myself though  if you can get it on pc there are a number of mods that really enhance the graphics the base game though shows its age.

Morrowind is highly overrated as far as rpg-mechanics and depth go...it is just as repetitive as Skyrim when it comes to quest content and NPC interaction, it is basically dungeon crawling and going from NPC A to NPC B and back again over and over, but just much slower (until you've done an absurd amount of bunnyhoping and gained some athletics and speed), nothing is very difficult to find or solve and the combats are even less challenging than Skyrim as long as you don't choose to get way in above your head and start going into fights against vastly superior enemies since there is no level scaling.

Ouch, first time i heard that... hmmm... it would be for PC as Levo said so i could mod it i guess.

Well if it is for PC there is a mod out there that gives Morrowind the same graphics as Skyrim. I watched a video and it was pretty intense.

As for the game. The RPG experience is greater, and the lore... well if you like lore there is probably 10 times as much as Oblivion or Skyrim thanks to a lack of voice acting means people have more than 2 topics to talk about at any given time.

There are a number of mods for the game that improve on the graphics and game play. These can effectively erase most of the dusty look and feel due to age.

The two biggest differences for someone who cut their teeth on Oblivion or Skyrim will be the combat and the voice acting. Morrowind combat is pretty different, and they do not voice the vast majority of the dialog. The advantage to not voicing the interaction with the NPCs is that the story writers were actually able to put lore content into the game. Dialog topics would be introduced and as you talked with the NPC, more options and deeper dialog would come out. Conversations were a lot more than the string of 10 second sound bites that we get today on an extremely limited range of topics.

That's pretty much what I wish Skyrim had.
I'm seriously considering to buy Morrowind and play it very soon, it seems so appealing to me after hearing many people praise it, reading about it, and watching play-videos.

Get the game of the year edition. The extra areas make it better. The world is also a lot more unique. Skyrim & Cyrodil cities and terrain look like any fantasy series. Morrowind's terrain and cities are truly unique in every way. Go to vivec and Sadrith Mora, nothing in Skyrim, Oblivion, or the FO games really compares.

I will be going back to Morrowind for sure, but I doubt I'll be playing Oblivion again.

The way I see it the things that Oblivion did better than Morrowind, Skyrim did better than Oblivion. So I'd rather go back from Skyrim to Morrowind than from Skyrim to Oblivion.

1. Is it worth playing?
2. would you go back to morrowind after skyrim?
1. If you want to be a fan of the series I suppose, otherwise, if you want a good game, then no. I don't think it's worth playing due to the numerous amounts of flaws it has, more so than Skyrim.
2. Nope. I lasted 20 hours in Morrowind so I'd never go back to it. I do on the other hand go back to other older titles of other franchises, such as Fallout or Deus Ex.

Morrowind pros:
Deeper storyline
Deeper characters
More skills
Can create virtually any character you desire

Morrowind cons:
Horrible combat (don't give me that RPG bull, the dice rolling mechanics don't work for a first person game)
Terribly slow (no fast travel, you're gonna have a very tough time playing this game if you're a heavy armored warrior)
Bad sound (not much music, sounds are awkward)
Bad graphics (not usually a problem for me but this is just silly sometimes)
Flawed levelling mechanics
Journal is impossible to keep track of current quests later in the game

Basically the gameplay, graphics, sound, and voice acting is way better in Skyrim, but Morrowind has a better story.

this pretty much. there are lots more options and weapons and stuff which is good but doesn't make up for the bad and progression of the series.

skyrim can easily be played as the first TES game and many people played skyrim as their first so go ahead... there is a book in the game that is a timeline of all TES games i would read that in game if u see it or find it online.

I'd pretty much have to concur with this; you can overcome some of these deficiencies through mods, and the lack of voice acting isn't necessarily a bad thing. It allowed for much fuller characters and a much fuller world.

Morrowind's story is deeper than Skyrim's and Oblivion's, but it ain't nearly as deep as people make it out to be.

Daggerfall's story is by far the best in the series. So much intrigue, so many ways to do it, so many endings... it's a masterpiece. The only thing Morrowind has going for it is it's in-depth look of Dunmer society and tradition, things which only mildly interest me.

Yes and yes.

However, I would get a good graphics mod first just to help you aclimatise to the graphics. There are plenty of good ones.

Since it seems a lot of people can`t function if the graphics aren`t something like the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

It has too much dialogue though, I don't know if Morrowind is a videogame or a tome.

You can fix the slow problem VERY quickly. Go to the town north of Balmora that starts with a C, Caldera I think it is called. One of the stores has a recall amulet. Buy that, and buy a mark scroll. Mark your favorite location(like your house), and the recall amulet will take you there whenever you want. Combine that with the intervention spells/scrolls, the silt striders, mages guild teleportations and you can travel around very quickly. Sure no fast travel, but I'm not a fan of fast travel anyways.

My Telvanni mage using intervention spells, the mages guild service, and recall could teleport from one end of the map to the other and back again selling things and completing quests and very little time in game passed.... can't say the same for fast travel.

And I notice a lot of people who didn't like it only played it for 20 hours. Yes it is hard to get into, if you have to swing your sword five times to hit someone it can get old. It takes a bit to get into, but once your in it you will be very happy for hundreds of hours.

It`s a role playing game. designed to immerse you into a rich and different world. And why must a game be limited in literature? Why must we be treated like idiots?

I think I started playing Morrowind when I was ten. Maybe I'm just a bookworm, but I was happy enough to read it. Regardless, I'd rather have too much dialogue than too little.

I think it's more of a complaint that a lot of NPCs aren't people as much as they are walking encyclopedias. It's especially annoying when they have 30 options, but they're mostly the same between each and every NPC that has that option
The literature is good though-I always loved reading the in-game books

They can't be compared. So vastly different after 10 years that there is no point of comparison. Morrowind's GOTY edition is cheap - give it a try to see if you like it, but keep it mind its a ten year old game with all the limitations that might imply.

Oh I have a very nice reply for you, but I will not post it since I think that mods would ban me from this planet (which doesn't sound like that bad idea, when you think about it).
