Never played a warrior. Convince me

I find a warrior to be boring. Although I've never tried one. I've only played a short stint of a warrior in the "tutorial". Convince on being one. An should I be a 1H shield or a 2 handed?

I do two swords. I tend to think of how the combat WOULD be. Instead of the moves my character does I tend to think of the same fight but you know, more badass. I just like hitting things basically.

Also, your experience can vary greatly depending on your chosen weapon. A weapon and shield play way differently then going berserk with two weapons, which in turn is way different than swinging a two-handed weapon around.

What's not to love about getting in peoples faces, chopping heads off and dancing around slow and unwieldy enemies?

If that's not for you then I guess there's no convincing you. And that's fine, to each their own :)

It's impossible to convince someone to play something they tend not to like.

I primarily only play tanks in games. Be it single player, multiplayer or MMO. They're easy for me to control and grasp and I find them fun. Magic classes I tend to stay away from because most games require them to be glass cannons. Great power, but can't survive 5 minutes without taking a dirt nap.

TES games are really the only ones where I will roll magic type characters, because I don't have to rely soley on glass cannon builds to be both effective or fun.

So, for your case...if you really wanna try hacking and slashing I'd suggest building a spellsword. That will at least offer you a bit more than just slugging it out with your foes and might keep it interesting for you.

Well, the melee is very simple, but I find it enjoyable myself.
These are your options for warriortype melee combat:

Regular attack
Power Attack
Blocking
A shieldbash/staggering strike

The differences between the weapons:
Weapon and shield: Standard attacks and powerattacks. Lowest damage, but best defense.
2-handed weapon: Standard attacks and powerattacks. Highest damage per hit and can block, though much less efficiently than a shield. Staggering strikes are the prefered way to counter attacks.
Dual Wiled: Standard attacks and powerattacks, but also a regular double attack and a trippel powerattack. Highest damage per second if you have the stamina too use it. Drawback is that you can't block.

Not sure how you can find it boring if you've never tried it.

Most ... okay all ... of my characters are warrior types ... who have an inquisitive mind that encourages them to learn different skills that might be outside of the stereotypical not too bright sword swinger "box".

I vary this a bit between characters but, usually end up with about the same person.

However, I don't want to have to get into deep thinking or planning in my games or do much in the way of true "role playing" ... just not fun for me. Mostly I'm just about adventuring and seeing the sights.

So while I have fun playing my way ... and don't get bored ... it might not be particularly fun or challenging for others.

Only thing you can do is try a warrior and you'll either enjoy it or not.

If not ... just start again with a different character.

Dual-wielding is for crazy-swing-a-lot characters, which are the warriors I dislike.
Two-Handed warriors are okay, but I don't like the warriors like "big armor! big weapon! big power".

My personal preference? Some Light Armor, a Sword, and a Shield. I like to call it 'tactical' warrior. I just block, wait for a chance to counter the enemy, or use my shield bash if the enemy never lets up.

As a matter of fact, I once obtained Stormcloak Armor, a Hide Shield, and a Steel Sword... and from there on out I never once changed armors or weapons again. I defeated Alduin with the same equipment I entered Riverwood with for the first time.

I find it more strategic using a shield and sword combo, and more casual (which I dislike) using 2hand or dualwield.

using a shield, with the right perks is fun. shield charging paralyzes your opponent while sending them flying. blocking whilst your opponent is power attacking, slows everyone else down for a few second and shield bashing may disarm your opponent.

I don't usually play pure warriors, I always have some spellcasting on the side, plus alchemy, but roleplaying a 2-hander wielding Nord has been fun so far. And I've managed to stick to only using alteration and restoration too.

I have an Orc 2hander (Fire enchanted Warhammer) with heavy armor (and the unarmed boost) which also shoots fireballs.

He is fun just bulldozing everything in sight but I do change the difficulty if things get to easy and boring.

"big armor! big weapon! big power!"

If Jeremy Clarkson played skyrim...

IMO dual wield is plenty strategic. It's all in the footwork ;)

In MMO's though warriors tend to be the more over-whelming classes in late game due to the pure HP wall they generally get combined with massive attack potential. But unlike MMO tank classes the shield warrior build in Skyrim is a very good choice, with the perks the shield tree has it's almost foolish not to add some points into it unless your purely dual wielding. Most people who come off of mage and ranger types don't tend to like it though because the play style is a lot different and slower in some ways, mainly you have to be right on your enemies to inflict damage. You can still try it and see if you like it, if not then just stop that's really all there is to it.

I always start with warriors. Ive tried to get into the Wizardry in Skyrim -- but dont enjoy playing pure mages.

My latest character is a badass Battlemage -- man, is it fun!

Breton Battlemage
Right hand: Bound Battleaxe (bought the tome in dragonsreach)
Left hand: Conjure Flame Atronach (got for "free" gaining entrance to the College)

Light, Fur Armor, Boots & Gaunts
Novice Hood

Skills:
Conjuration, 2-Handed, Light Armor, Resto and a little Enchanting (not too much).

Strategy:
Enter combat, conjure my flame chick, bound battleaxe and run in Swinging! No sneaking. Lots of fun (level 8 i believe).

My other char (level 21-- longest Ive stuck with a char), is a Redguard Hunter. Sneak, Archery, Heavy Armor, One-Handed, Lots of Smithing. Lots of fun, too.

Maybe try a bit longer. If you don't like it, no harm done.

I tend to get killed a lot for the first little while because I don't follow most of the excellent "how to play a warrior" tips others in the thread have provided.

But, that's just me.

As previously mentioned, I don't put a lot of thought into the finer points of the game ... just charge straight ahead and suffer for it, lol.

Though, I have put a lot more effort into bows, stealth and patience with my current character.

Nah... my two words would be shield bash.

BAM! Can't do nuthin', can ya mage? MWAHAHA!! BAM!! BAM!! BAMBAMBAM!!!!!

Edit: If you're gonna try a melee warrior, really, the best thing IS shield bash. Alot of people are put off by warriors because they get owned by spellcasters (and shouting draugrs, and dragons, and giants, etc), but with proper use of shield bashing, such opponents are rendered ineffectual.

I never had a problem just using the 2 handed block bash. That move really is over powered. Plus with the damage boost you get from 2 handed weapons will destroy any mage in one hit.

Spoiler
paarthurnax can provide a perk which renders shouting draugr ineffective

Mages ditch the big spells if you can get close. Whirlwind sprint and slow time are good for this.

But yeah, battering a Mage with your shield is quite satisfying :P

ha i prefer bum rushing them with a battle axe because i believe in a strong offense is the best defense, also dont get tired of lopping heads off with my axe...to each their own

you know if you like shields theres a special shield that also provides a ward against magic when blocking :)
