New Vegas morality

Post » Thu May 05, 2011 8:33 pm

So I saw this on the Bethblog and figured I'd link to http://planetfallout.gamespy.com/articles/interviews/1930/Planet-Fallout-Interviews-Josh-Sawyer.

After reading this Q&A here, I think I may definately need som anti-depressants just to play New Vegas.

Vegas, Sin City - how much sin is in Fallout: New Vegas?
There's a lot of sin in the city of New Vegas itself and a lot of sin in the Mojave Wasteland -- at least from a contemporary perspective. To most of the people in New Vegas, terrible behavior is just what they've come to expect. Mr. House and the families of The Strip squeeze gamblers for all they're worth, the New California Republic taxes all "legitimate" trade and abuses the local populace, and Caesar's Legion enslaves or crucifies most of the people they come across. It's not a fun place for the "little guy".

Everyone is guilty of something it seems. Very nice IMO.

A shame I doubt the main story arc will let players knock over all of the factions and set themselves up as the new king of New Vegas. Of course the second best option would be to just waste them all... may be fun, but not on my first playthrough. :fallout:

Well if I understand J.S. Sawyer in Dev Diary 4 properly. Theres a fourth independent path, and it can diverge two ways, turn New Vegas into an Anarchy, or become the 'Hero of the People'. Sounds like to much work IMO, so I'm just going to side with Mr. House.

It seems "good or bad" will mainly be set in turns as to how it relates to the player. Is it good for the player or is it bad for the player.

I think NV plays the kind of philosphy I hate in terms of I get saddened at the thought. "Good and Evil are only words, whats is good to one person is evil to another." and vice versa. I'm gonna need a teddy bear to make my character feel better when he goes to sleep in the Lucky 38 every night :cryvaultboy:

Thanks for the information.

The New California Republic taxes all "legitimate" trade and abuses the local populace.

I have always intended to support the New California Republic. If I don't have any option to reform it from within, I'll have to go independent though. I certainly won't have anything to do with it, if it makes me feel like a tax collector. That's where I draw the line. :glare:

I'll make my decisions based on my own personal moral code, and think it will be interesting to see where it leads me.

I think it's better that way, I mean, think about it this way.

You find a crippled wastelander out in the Mojave who's been tied up. If you free him, you'd expect to get good karma right? And if you kill him you'd get bad.

But, what if you kill him with the mindset of "If I let him live, he's suffer and die a miserable and slow death, as he's crippled. If I kill him, it will be quick and painless". Then dispatch him..

Now that you mention it, I dont really know. He vanished around August IIRC.

@Erik- Indeed. But my desire for posh definately drives another part of me, as well as my opinion that House is the better path. Some may do what Sawyer said in Dev Diary 4, aka 'you know what? I dont think any of you guys are fit to run New Vegas' so you can either rise as the champion, or plunge NV into anarchy.

It brings to mind that quote from Debbie Reynolds on mob life in Vegas during the 50's. "Nobody got killed in Vegas, except the people who needed to be killed." (from the history channel show Mobsters, back a few years ago.)

Well a moral person would at least ask him about his own opinion first. He really should have a say in the matter. ;)

In any case, the clear moral choice would be to bring him to the closest settlement, get him a doctor and set him up with some accomodations -- perhaps by giving some caps to a local shelter or church on his behalf.

More realistic that way. There's probably no knights in shining armor like the east coast BoS were. I knew the NCR wouldn't be.

Mandating euthenasia for a human being based on spurious logic and assumptions about their well-being is about as far from a good or kind act as you can get. IT's pure nonse.

You want to help him, you give him a hand to safety. You can't just go around murdering everyone you think is having a bad day.

"So I met this guy with a limp. He told me that it was nothing, but I knew he was going to get an infection and die painfully based off my brief perusing of a magazine in a doctor's office. So I killed him to ease his pain."

"I saw a woman crying the other night. She told me that her fiance left her at the altar. Well, I figure that nobody wants to live their life alone so I..."

These are not morality. It's mental illness.

Aw I didn't know the game would be completely over after the main quest's end, just like FO3. I wish they did have the time to let us play the game afterwards with all the changes before the DLC.

I'm kind of glad they decided to make everything more grey, which is how it should be. You don't come across people around here just so sparkly with goodness you can almost see that halo or people so evil you just know even the devil would seem innocent now do you? This is how it should be in the wastes. Everyone is out for their own survival first and those of others second and that's exactly how I'm going to play my character. Maybe you should think about if dragging that crippled sorry old man's rear isn't going to be a suicide quest. I'd be more like 'do I have more supplies and do I have enough to gather more once I get to that bloody doctor for a guy that can't even reward me once I save his skinny rear.' If the answer is no to any of those you can bet he's either going to get a bullet to the brain so I can loot his corpse (under the pretense that it was better for him this way) or I'm going to wish him luck with dragging himself to a town after gnawing through the ropes he's tied with with his teeth.

Love the shades of gray in the game. Though I liked to see a small faction that has is good. Many organizations start off with good intentions but as they gain power they lose their way. It be great if we good join such a faction and depending on your choices (choices would be 1) take one root which would be easy but morally wrong or 2) take another root which would be damn near impossible but would be morally right). We would be able to steer the factions to be benevolent or just another corrupt bureaucracy.

Can't wait till New Vegas is released. With all the various shades of grey in the 3 main factons, I think on my first playthough I'm going to do, as Sawyer put it, say "it's anarchy now."

I think I played a game where something like this happened
IE: You rescue a guy only to find out later that he became your worst problem now.
And it was also in Sienkiewicz's Ogniem i Mieczem, where Skrzetuski saved Chmielnicki from hired killers, only when getting to his destination to find out he started the whole Cossack revolution ;D

Wait what? I've heard Brothers (male and female) say quite a few cursewords) The slavers cursed too. IDK what Fallout 3 you're playing.

It's definitely true to an extent though. The slavers were definitely the worst of the worst type of people. I mean, there was not a decent one in the bunch. No one did it because that's just tradition, they did it because they were selfish and cruel. And it kind of looks to be the same way again. I've already whined about this before, but Caesar's legion still sounds completely unredeemable. I want to side with them, but 'taxation' will never be as bad as crucifiction, and I don't care what Ron Paul has to say about it.

They've actually stated that most people CL comes across are either enslaved or crucified. Maybe they're trying to unite the wasteland, but it's impossible to think of them as better than a republic that values individual rights and tolerance, no matter how corrupt it gets. (they cant be too corrupt if they're capable of being the winner in the end) There had best be a damn good reason to support Caesar if they want to keep claiming 'morally gray'.
