It's just a mad science lab? Why does it ahve to be like Area 51? There are more black ops research facilites in the US you know they do madder stuff than test fancy planes.

I seriously don't get people's deal with Area 51. It's just a dusty old army camp with just a few crashed UFOs. BIG DEAL.

I assume the big deal with area 51 would be the aliens. A lot of people seemed to enjoy the mothership zeta dlc from fallout 3, I would enjoy the opportunity. myself, of taking on more than 3. That doesn't seem to be the case with this DLC coming up, it looks like we'll just be fighting some mutated and cyberized creatures.

It's a big testing facility with a lot of experimental technology. This does not equal Area 51. As far we and the Fallout universe is concerned, there is nothing extra special about it, such as aliens. So no, The Big Empty is not Area 51 and I do not think this is basically Area 51 DLC.

Is this a joke or do you really have no idea what area 51 is?

OP sadly I think Obsidian will pass on one of the United States most mysterious places. Famous and mysterious at the same time.

A shame if you ask me. Most everything else in fo is referred to by its real name as far as locations, or at least close to it. If this was area 51 I think they would just go ahead and call it area 51.

Area 51 should have most definitely been in fo nv. Aliens or not......

I would sooner learn about somewhere new than Area 51, Area 51 is a place where experimental planes are tested and a lot of over-hype surrounding the place in the face of equally as shifty Air Force Bases; just a spooky place with a spooky name.

EDIT: Yeah I know that there's more than that in our world but this is Fallout and I would sooner see somewhere original.

No this isn't Area 51, though I still want to go there. Area 51 would be real cool to go to just to go see aliens in test tubes.

I don't see anything that implies they don't know what Area 51 is.

Like I said earlier, there is nothing about Area 51 in real life that would point to it being an interesting location for a game beyond conspiracy theories and stories. Basically, Fallout would be able to do whatever they wanted with it, be it Aliens, tech similar to the Big Empty, etc. So what's the point of doing Area 51? Also, if you take into account the scale of New Vegas, it would make absolutely no sense to add in Area 51 in the base game.

This discussion always seems to be cut in half, its either "Oh god no, and Area 51 DLC would svck." or "Oh cool more aliens in test-tubes and experimental technology." Maybe not that exactly but it always seems to be this way, and yah I think it would have been better to have some more real life places in NV.

I'm less on the side of saying that it would svck, more on the side of saying there is no reason to believe Area 51 is an interesting location. But there are tons of real life places in New Vegas. Goodsprings, Primm, Nipton, Nellis, Mt. Charleston, Cottonwood Cove, etc. That certainly isn't all of them, just like Fallout 3, it is modeled after the actual area and though the map is not to scale, the real life locations are where they should be.

I don't think they are skipping it, I think they just wanna do it some justice and have it in a full game one day rather than a 5 hour DLC. I'd imagine it's something they've talked about before and have some good ideas for..

BIg MT is pretty much an Area 51 DLC though, so yes, to answer your question.

If there is something solid that would make it a good location for Fallout, enlighten me.

But really, if there is a DLC in a super secret base with experimental technology that is not called Area 51, would it really be better if it were called Area 51? There isn't any real gravity to the location.

area 51 is as big of a mystery as the jfk assassination. Speculation, conspiracy theories. They are close to the same level.

For a game thats supposed to be only about American 1950s (so most people on here say) they are missing 1950s America big [censored] time by not doing something with area 51.

I live here I know whats big time and whats not, and area 51 is one of the biggest famous mysterious speculative conspiracy theorists dreams. From when it was first noticed until now.

Area 51 needed to be in this game. Even if it was destroyed.....

I still don't see the point, I watch television and actually love UFO and Conspiracies in general but I just don't find Area 51 that appealing. Want to see a top-secret governmental experiment in Fallout? Go to any of the Vaults or Mariposa in the original. It's a game set where the culture of the 1950's never died but the game itself takes place after all that has been destroyed; when did raiders with green mohawks ever fit into the 50's?

I like the look of the Big Empty and don't see the allure of Area 51 personally which would really tie it down to planes and UFO's, which were covered extensively in Fallout 3.

If you think that Area 51 was all about secret/crazy scientific experiments, then (I think) this is probably the closest you're going to get to "an Area 51" location. Kind of like how some people griped about not having a casino heist - we got one, but it wasn't quite what anybody was expecting in a heist.

If you want aliens, take the Wild Wasteland trait on a new character and go explore the northern edge of the NV map.

As I said before, it just doesn't fit with the scale. And it has nothing to do with the 50s culture themes, Area 51 is a fairly recent pop-culture figure (past 25 years or so)

Wait did someone say they fail to see how area 51 would be interesting in a game supposed to be about 1950s american mind set?

Area 51 is 1950s American mind set. It has more documentaries than the JFK assassination. Its all about conspiracy and speculation sci fi, war, being better than the other guy. It is in the top 3 or 5 things of wonder in the U.S. What is in there? The United States goverment will shoot you dead if you try too hard to find out.

And don t give me the too far bull [censored] again you can not run from Vegas to the boarder of cali in 10mins. If they would have moved the map north 2 inches it would be there.

They could have had a field day with the place.

We just went to Utah, but area 51 is too far? Give me a break.... Seriously........ too far.

It just seems like a misstep to ignore such a huge icon in the US. A lot of stores in Nevada even sell Area 51 merchandise and references to it are everywhere you look. It's become a major part of Nevada's culture.

Niether are punks with green mohawks, everything does not revolve around the 50's especially when the 50's mindset stopped being relevant to the people in the wasteland 200 years ago.
