My opinion on smithing

After months of using something would your character readily ditch a sword that he'd used and has familiarity with for a weapon with slightly greater damage but no combat bonuses? It might get people to want to specialize in something

It might for some people, but I tend to make weapons and stick with them for a long time anyway. Even when I get to 100 in smithing, I don't take perks for the next level up in gear until there is a reason for switching over to that gear that makes sense to me. Plus I tend now to use certain gear for symbolic or RP purposes... when I was playing out the CW, I wore the armor the Stormcloaks gave me until the final battle, at which point I switched to a unique set that was modded in for that moment and which I had to make myself (it still fell under the Steel or Steel Plate perk but gave somewhat better protection). I used the Axe of Eastmarch as my primary weapon because that's what Ulfric gave me when I became Thane and it felt appropriate to wield it in his service.

When I joined the Companions I bought Wolf armor and Skyforge steel weapons and I stuck with those throughout the questline, only switching weapons when I got Wuuthrad. (Kind of a bummer that I can't use it in conjuction with the Shield of Ysgramor. He must've been really something to wield both of those, OTOH he was apparently able to eat soup with a fork so I guess in his case anything's possible. )

After finishing the Companions main stuff I finally switched to Ebony but not until after I upgraded my social status considerably through marriage. But I have Dragonbane now and will probably use that as my primary weapon, along with the aforementioned shield, for a good bit, perhaps even through the end of the MQ and beyond. The only Ebony weapon I carry is a bow and that's because I haven't acquired one that is meaningful in any way so I just use the best possible one I can make with the perks I have. I will still use Wuuthrad if I am going out to kill Thalmor, although I think I've pretty much cleared all the known Thalmor enclaves so I may not see much of them any more.

The only other armor upgrade I'll be making is to Dragon since I don't think this character will use Daedric at all, and I haven't even taken the perk for Dragon yet so there is no temptation to switch just because I find some, even if there were any likelihood of stumbling on a full set in the course of my adventures.

an rpg is about making the best possiable character
There's your problem. For me, a RPG is about role-playing. That can be many things for many people, but i'm not interested in the best possible version of everything.

I haven't changed out of my Wolf Armor in over 200 hours.

I've noticed I am like that too. If I feel the need to Change armor it is either because I feel like it fits my character or I am doing a quest and I want to wear armor that fits the story line.

You know I never even bothered with it the first two times through the Companions, but I made a point of wearing it this time and I really liked it. I don't think I even realized you could buy it from Eorlund until late in my second Companions playthrough, and then it was kind of like... too late for it to matter somehow. But I made a point of getting it ASAP this time around. It's on a mannequin in Breezehome now but I will probably still wear it when doing jobs for them, which I fully intend to do. Not because it's better than anything else I have, but because that's what I feel I *should* be wearing when I am fulfilling my role as a member of that faction. If it was good enough for Kodlak, dammit, it's good enough for me.

I take it you've never said "Hey it'd be better if this was like that" Well if you have you've clearly contradicted yourself and proven my point, if not you must like everything the way it is.. but you know.. whatever

Thinking something could be done better another way =/= knowing how to design it.

I think Skyrim would be better with Command spells. I don't have the slightest clue about how to code them into the game and make them work.
