Orcs and Dark Elves should have infravision.

These races live underground for most of their lives, why can't they see in the dark?

Not in the Elder Scrolls they don't.

In other series they might, but not this one.

What?

Neither the Orsimer nor Dunmer live underground.
Orsimer live in tribal strongholds and Dunmer are for the most part civilised, except the nomadic Ashlanders.

Except they don't.

And the one race that does, is blind.

Well, in Morrowind it seemed like many of the Dunmer lived in caves in mountains, which is correct by D&D lore as well. I just assumed this race should have some form of infravision.

Orcs in TES are not as cut and dry, though it does seem like the majority of the hostile one's you encounter all reside inside of caves and mountains which makes sense. These creatures should see in the dark also.

Vos? Tel Vos? Sadrith Mora? Vivec? None of those were caves or underground and they were primarily Dunmer settlements.

Only Ald'ruun had them living underground and that was simply due to the convinenence of the shell buildings they used. And they were only a few feet below the surface.

Those were Bandits. hence, why they were hostile.........and also why they hid out in caves,

edIt: And you mention D&D Lore. No relevance at all. D&D Lore and Elder Scrolls Lore are two very different things.

i seem to remember this guy saying something was wrong with the lore before because it did not match tolkein...and he is wrong again, neither of those races live in caves any more than nords or imperials do

D&D is not TES

Those are just random enemies. Orcs live in Strongholds in Orsinium, which are above ground.

I think TES split off the DnDTolkien influences around Daggerfall. Then it got smacked around with the devs' baseball bat during Morrowind. Luckily*, Oblivion came back and cemented it in hardcoe staple fantasy. Huhm.

*edit, insert cynic undertone here. Or don't! :)

I mention it because most of TES was contrived from D&D and Tolkien novelty, and yes many of the races are depicted in similar fashion. Orcs and Dark Elves are evil, they live under the earth and not around day walking races. They should have infravision.

TES lore is inspired by the same sources Tolkien and other fantasy writers use (and abuse) but it's in no way related to any other saga.

Indeed, which is very disappointing and ruins immersion for me to some extent. Though, I can still RP my way through these obstacles to some degree so it doesn't make me dislike the game altogether.

Same inspirations, different handling. Orcs and Dunmer happened to draw the short straw of fate. Granted, the flavor is there.

---

i'm not sure what the D&D lore is for Orcs and dark elves, but Orcs were just a warrior caste of proto-Highelves, whose god got owned right in front of them. Supermagicalreligion being what it is, they transformed in turn and lost their lovely golden glow.

Dark elves broke off from the proto-Highelves and modified their ancestral worship hardcoe. Added a lot of daedra cultism on top. Then they ran away and hid behind a volcano. Best part is that the warrior caste (see above) failed to stop the heretics and got turned into orcs as punishment. Quite fun stuff.

Maybe it's the same? Haven't looked up DnD stuff. The Orc-earth-poop-Malacath stuff is kinda similar to Tolkien, at least according to Peter Jackson.

No, for me immersion comes directly from being artificially placed into another body in a fantasy world. If that fantasy world is going to copy things from other sources I just wish it would stay more consistent with those sources, thats all.

But, I worry not. I still play my evil dark elf or my evil orc in the way I think they should be played and so far im having fun with it. I just wish they would have infravision since im only active at night time with those characters.

If everyone stayed consistant with the source material everything would be the same and no change would ever be made.

that would be the worst thing ever.

They aren′t copying things from other sources though. Dark Elves in TES are in no way related to Dark Elves in D&D except for name and skin color... Neither are the Orcs... Stop trying to see them as coming from one source, and all should be based on that source... TES isn′t like that.
