It's ironic that the only reason I switched to console games is because I was tired of buggy PC games or new PC games with requirements that would force me to buy a new computer every two years. I was too naive.
Anywhoo, in a 4-5 hours span I only had to use the front touch power switch twice due to New Vegas freezing. Though there were a few more times in the same span where I preemptively quit to the main menu, quit the game, and started it, again. I did this as soon as I noticed the game start to stutter or pause. After doing this the game would be okay for the next while -- enough to get me past the point I had the most recent stuttering, at least.
One thing I find that helps is that when entering a new area I don't do *anything* (ie. don't even touch the controller) until all my companions show up, which sometimes can take a very long time, or not at all in Gannon's case, and to a lesser extent Rex. I found that if I moved off before my companions appeared the game would stutter and freeze. On the other hand, in the hotel in Westside neither of my companions followed me in and the game was smooth as silk while inside the building. I'd try playing without companions at all except that they're handy for carrying loot.
Speaking of companions, post-1.02 I've noticed that occasionally they get stuck, as if I'd told them to "wait", despite being set to follow. At least with 1.02 the local area map shows where they are, because sometimes I didn't notice until I was about to leave the area. When this happens I start a conversation with them and exit, and this seemed to reset them to follow me properly.
Overall, 1.02 has been an improvement, for me. If the game stays like this at least I should be able to complete the game. Though I'm dreading any big battles/sequences -- in G.I. Blues where Pacer is pinned down by gunfire the game was stuttering something fierce, and I don't even think of that sequence as being particularly big.
