A Plea to the Bethesda Staff from a longtime Necromancer

Yes, you have to join the college to get the better spells. The conjuration mage there, Phinis Gestor, is the only one you can get the master and expert spells from.

Darn oh well, looks like i'll go too school then. I was hoping not to, as I use Light Armor/sword/shield as well as conjuration. wont fit in, but oh well!

All you have to do is pass the entrance exam, you don't have to do anything else really.

Well, there's the hazing ritual, but that involves a bar of soap and the showers. Watch out for J'zargo.

Yeah, im not doing any of the quests for now. Having conjuration as my only school of magic, the college has little to offer to me beside phineas.

It's just odd why some respawned with full gear and leveled to where I was at and others remained dead. Necromancy is all over the place right now and I just hope that one of the future patches addresses it. It's a shame that they put a new feature into a game that just doesn't work the way it was intended to work...at least I presume that the didn't intend for necromancy to be as inconsistent as it is now.

It would seem that a few perfectly safe characters to use as Dead Thralls are Orchendor, Kornalus, Ulfric, Galmar, Sild the Warlock, and Silus (though he's terrible).
Yeah, this is definitely going to need some investigation, as just in the short list of candidates you provide here I can see multiple conflicting timers and potential respawn overrides, so researching the whole lot is going to be a pain unless we can figure out a standard against which to compare potential candidates.

The system could definitely do with a patch to iron out the timer conflicts, as that's something only Beth can address; with one in place it would become vastly easier to sort out who is/not eligible as the random disappearances would stop.

Also, watch out for Saruman, he's really creepy.

Well, Saruman needs something to pass the time. In his free time he's a dentist for Willy Wonka.

Just wait, once I figure out how to change it my next picture is going to be Mr. Rogers.

Creepy is just getting started.

I'm not sure what this is worth, but here's a bit of info I discovered while working on a mod to remove all those annoying 'essential' tags: there is a large number of people labeled 'unique' (too many to post here), which implies they will not respawn if killed. As I am testing the overhaul mods I made I have yet to do any Thrall testing, however it would not surprise me if anyone marked as non-respawning were eligible for permanent status.

Most of them are pretty worthless as Thralls, as they are random (albeit named) civilians and can't fight for crap, but there are a few who would be worthwhile if this theory pans out.
