The Scariest Video Game(s)

It is strange. Fingers crossed for Thief 4 eh. I'm not too sure about what they've done with Deus Ex though.

I'm worried more about Thief 4 than I am about Deus Ex 3, to be frank. IMO, Thief benefited heavily from its simplistic approach to stealth. These days, though, I fear it would try to cater to Splinter Cell fans, as well as fans of generally "modern day stealth". I'm talking things like extremely conveniently placed guards for context-sensitive stealth actions, lots of high tension chase sequences, turning Garret into an unrealistically superhuman badass, and using a fullscreen filter to indicate the player is hidden, rather than using a light gem.

That's not even counting the horror aspect, something I really, really like in the Thief series. What if they go for a strictly human cast of opponents or, even worse, try to mix in a rivalry drama between Garret and some other thief (Oh dear god, don't do this)? I don't know about some people, but I'd much prefer him deal with the undead, demons that seem to come straight out of hell itself, etc., but not overdoing it. In past games, these types of foes were only encountered in places it would make sense to, so a full-out "monsters invade the city" plot would svck as well.

But eh, it's a bit too soon to start worrying all that much about it. That went a bit off-topic anyway.

If you're a Thief fan then you really have to check out The Dark Mod. There have been some extremely creepy missions released for it. It may well turn out to be the future if Thief 4 turns out to be a pile of poo.

Amnesia was damned intense. Almost too much. Just started Fatal Frame 2 and already it's proving to be truly exceptional.

I can't believe I forgot the Thief series, of all things.

Same here.

Absolutely true.

Amnesia, hands down.

I don't find most "scary" games to be actually scary, because my usual tactic goes something like this:

*small noise from corner, possibly monster, probably ambience*

"Proceeds to unload the entire clip from his currently equipped weapon into said corner, lighting it up like the 4th of July"

"Well, I THINK there used to be a monster there....kind of....."

The fact that Amnesia had an automatic save/load system and, most importantly, NO way to fight is what made it truly scary. It activated my fight-or-flight in a way no other game did, because you had to be slow and careful stacking boxes behind you and climbing into closets to get away in time while SOMETHING IS 5 FEET BEHIND YOU. :P Good times

And as a close second, although Left4dead and its sequal are not scary games, there are times on expert when you get a surprise tank and everyone else gets massacred in like 5 seconds but your able to slip past and you do a mad dash the last like 100 feet to the safe room with the tank so close behind you that you can hear its breathing....THAT's a fancy bit of scare right there.

Penumbra and Amnesia are quite close in my opinion, but I think they were a different sort of scary. Amnesia had a tension building towards a thriller-scary gameplay feel, there was a lot of pace in actually getting through the game. Penumbra was much slower, where you really utilised the dark as the tension built; however the core gameplay was more clumsy.

Out of the two I'd probably go for Amnesia, although I do think it's being overhyped here, I found it thrilling, but I was never afraid to play it, more so I didn't really find it frightening, just exciting.

Cthulhu is also worth a play, it has some rather creepy moments, good fun overall. Fatal Frame 2 is also a must-play, it has a real feeling of impotence, which hugely builds tension - once again I had a lot of fun playing it.

And, of course, Eternal Darkness, that's one to stick with you, definitely worth playing, it's good, on par with the rest here. I can't think of any other must-play horror games, for me this sums them up.

[Edit] @ Sub_Tonic: I found the water area to be one of the least frightening,
Spoiler
as it was quite easy to distinctly avoid the enemies, it wasn't this eternal game of hide and seek, if you're on a box, you're safe. Although the latter chase is good fun, you can logically conclude that the game devs have given you enough time to keep infront of the enemies, and that kills the whole fear element, keep running and you know you won't get caught.

I haven't really got a scariest game. I thought there were some creepy moments, like in the dungeons in Oblivion, or the abandoned houses in Fallout 3.

System Shock and System Shock 2, the Adam and Eve of all horror games to date (and still the best). Thief gets a speical mention, though.

Lab X-18 from STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl

Yeah, that's the place I was trying to describe earlier. It's quite hard to describe in terms of why it's so spooky: it's all just rather unpleasant, really.

Edit: oops: I was actually thinking of X16, but X18 is quite nasty too.
