The Scariest Video Game(s)

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:46 am

What is the scariest video game, or series of video games, you've played? What's your favorite survival-horror video game series? (That is... If you like the survival-horror genre of course).

Mine to this day has to be Silent Hill (series). It freaked me out so bad when I was younger that, now, I find absolutely nothing scary.

Silent Hill, the first two. To this day, nothing has come close.

Answer to both questions would be Silent Hill. Maybe it spoiled me, but I've never found any other supposedly scary games (Siren, FEAR, Call of Cthulhu DCotE, Dead Space, etc) to be scary at all.

FEAR isn't really scary, but it screws with your head a bit.

Left 4 Dead itself isn't a scary game, but it does have tense, slightly scary "crapcrapcrapcrap, we are so screwed!" moments.

The game that had the most genuinely startling moments for me was probably System Shock 2. In fact, that's still probably the best survival game I've ever played. Back then "survival-horror" wasn't a term that people knew, though. I was hoping that Bioshock would be a modern re-imagining of System Shock 2, but it just wasn't despite Ted Levine citing that as one of their design goals. I liked Bioshock, but it didn't have the edge that SS2 did.

Amnesia. There are Youtube videos of people playing it while talking. They freak out, it's hilarious.

The enemies in SS2 just kind of wandered around the levels, so you never knew what was around the next corner. Also the fact that you never had much ammo, your guns were always broken, and the creepy dialogue the enemies had, made for one scary game.

Still not a patch on Silent Hill though. :P

I guess "scariest" is a subjective thing, but in terms of those that creeped me out... good old Doom 3 certainly had an uncomfortable atmosphere: in the times it wasn't just being dull, it could be actually quite unpleasant. For me personally, bits of Stalker really freaked me out, especially the underground part of the Brain Scorcher at Yantar. I think it was because it was a bit weird rather than outright scary, though that whole region was uncomfortable to be around.

I bought Amnesia but haven't played it yet. Judging by the number of times it's been mentioned, maybe I'll regret playing it... kind of.

Half-Life 2 has some creepy parts. No, no, no, not Ravenholm, that's fine. The tunnel. :cryvaultboy: Other than that...nope.

Yep, I also liked the fact that you could be attacked while you were trying to hack a computer, a panel to open a door, etc. I spent more time hiding and planning my next move in that game than any other. I think the fact that I felt so responsible for my own survival is what made it so nerve-wracking. There was very little hand-holding in that game.

The Many and the nurses creeped me out. Oh, and the monkeys...oh god...the monkeys...

I bought Amnesia when it was on sale recently but haven't had time to install it yet.

Is it really and truly scary?

I find the lack of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penumbra:_Overture and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penumbra:_Black_Plague in this thread disturbing.

Silent Hill 3. 2 has better story, but 3 has better scares :cold:

The memory is very distant. I played through the game like a fifth time a week ago and didn't find it. Guess it was either Episode 2 or 1. I just knew I was seriously freaked out. There were a bunch of zombies and the tunnel was pitch black, broken cars blocking your path. I remember it took me about two hours to finish.

scariest one i've played is Dead Space. Not the scariest, but I'm not really into games scaring me enough to shamefully crap my pants...

It's in HL2, during the ride along the shoreline.

It's going to be a cliche answer, but Amnesia The Dark Descent is it for me. I've played all the Silent Hills, I've played the early Resident Evils, I've played Dead Space, none of them scared me at all.

Amnesia had me legitimately on edge throughout.

I've played a few hours of Penumbra Overture and it was pretty scary too, but I haven't beaten it. I really should. I have Penumbra Black Plague too and haven't touched it.

Amnesia.

No contest. Not even Call of Cthulu made me yelp as much as when I turned around and saw a monster the first time. In my thirty+ years as a gamer, I have never, EVER been afraid to play a game. And this too scary for me to play.

I say the Condemned series. Game does horror right. Less scare tactics, and more [censored] with your head through use of atmosphere. Having not played it, heard a lot of people claim that the Amnesia game was pretty damn scary. That's all I got. Not too many games scare me. That being said, Silent Hill 4:The room was pretty scary as well.

As soon as I clicked on this thread, I knew the first response would be Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I was right. :P I'm going to say the same answer, too. The first two Penumbra games are up there, too. Especially the part in Black Plague where
Spoiler
you give that guy the saw and he cuts off his arm and comes at you.
Shalebridge Cradle from Thief and that hotel level from Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines looked scary, but I've never played either game.

Also, when I was a little kid, the wallmasters from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time used to scare the crap out of me. There was also a pretty terrible game based on Beast Wars . It's so stupid now that I'm older, but man, it's so dark and desolate and it has scary pixelated dinosaurs. :o

Just look at that and tell me you see why that scared a 4-year old. I wish I could find footage of this one level. You were in a corridor and then this HUGE thing came at you really fast. Oh, man.

That was one scary [censored] level. Very well done IMHO.
