The Scariest Video Game(s)

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:09 pm

They have just confirmed that Amnesia will be coming to onlive. I know that a lot of people here have much better pc's than I do, but this is awesome news for me. I will finally get to see what everyone has been talking about for so long.

It's strange though, it's never happened to me with any other game it's just DCotE. But I'll have to try playing with that the next time it ever happens.

A lot of people will have that "out of nowhere" sickness from a certain game. I can't play the Katamari games because of motion sickness. My little brother, despite having played lots of first-person games, couldn't handle the first two Thief games. Sadly, I don't know of any solution for it.

I just realised that this is quite a paradox example for me. It's by far the worst Silent Hill game (by the original studio), but still the scariest and most disturbing.

Yeah, the game certainly has its problems, but I've never really gotten the blatant hate it gets from much of the fanbase. I found it the scariest of the first four, and that IS largely the point.

You can feel most of the time that it's just not a Silent Hill game. That part of the complaints is quite accurate. And for a good reason, since the game Room 302 was close to being finished when Konami decided that, since it's from Team Silent, it should be integrated into the Silent Hill series.

The first 2 Silent Hills were pretty scary, same with the STALKER games.

Also, it's not really scary as in "spooky", but back in the day Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and its nature of sudden deaths gave me some chills.

The scariest I've ever played (I don't play many) is Dead Space. I found it really tense, especially with really scary build ups and I would prepare myself for something, then it would turn out to be a faulty door, I'd relax and then out of nowhere comes this necromorph (?) and I would poo myself. Needless to say I never touched it after I completed it.

Episode one, the parking hall. That was bad, very bad. However it helps to use torches to light zombies on fire :flamethrower:

Thanks for that. You know, I'm in the mood for a thrill, I might just play through that again.

Oh, and I can't believe no has mentioned Eternal Darkness.

I have to say Fatal Frame during Nightmare Mode. I did a bad thing and used a Gameshark to unlock that first and it's not for the weak of heart. Even a candle going out can make you change your pants. It doesn't help that you have almost no film all throughout the game.

You r wuss. :D

Seriously though, I've been freak out by completely non-scary bits in games before. Like, I freak out a bit swimming underwater in the ocean in Just Cause 2, even though there's nothing down there.

I got through Amnesia okay. The prison level was the second most terrifying videogame experience I've ever had, just beaten by the Shalebridge Cradle. That level stopped me from ever finishing Deadly Shadows. I'm starting from scratch with Thief Gold now (assuming I ever get it running on a Vista machine).

I haven't played many scary games but I did play through Amnesia and it was a wicked good time. I only played it at night with headphones, alone or with my girlfriend. Just replayed a bit of it and still got spooked.

Bioshock had some good tense moments, like crossing a hallway in the Hades level where lights turn completely off then on as you approach a door and corpses mysteriously change places...

Dead Space 2 was scary for a bit but I think it was because of my ham-like fists maneuvering a controller instead of mouse n keyboard.

Lab X-18 from STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl and Lab X-8 from Call of Pripyat are great spooky levels.

Absolutely.

Go ahead and watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIRo0iT0qNw&feature=related around 2:00-2:30

That's essentially the main reason Amnesia is so scary: Whenever you're spotted, you cannot stand and fight. Running is the only option. For some people, this is especially nightmarish because they have an inherent fear of being chased, such as myself. To this day, I have yet to get past the water room.

As for what I think is the best, as well as my personal favorite: Silent Hill. I actually think the first game, while good back then, hasn't aged all that well and is thus one of the weakest entries in the series now. However, I love 2, 3 and 4. The music, the atmosphere, the tension; all of it goes unmatched within the horror genre, IMO.

A few Thief: Deadly Shadows answers in here...which is true- there are some scary missions.

But I'm going to have to answer Thief: The Dark Project. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsv4i5IUOuk, darkness, the fact that your character is not a tank, eerie locations (tombs, underground cities, psycho mansions, abandoned cities crawling with ghosts and zombies, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-Uw7TAG6x8, psycho mansions-turned zombie psycho mansions), and most of all great sound effects, make Thief: TDP the scariest game I've ever played. (And the best too).

Even with their outdated graphics, they're scary. The haunts can't be outrun and they sound like clanking chains. Zombies can't be destroyed without holy arrows or fire, not to mention they have a habit of pretending to be dead until you get too close. And then there are those skull-shooting ghosts.

What I find most scary in the series (excluding TDS as I've never played it) is the ghost of Giles the Head Librarian in Thief 2. He attacks like the Hammerite Priest ghosts, shooting skulls, but he can't be killed conventionally; you have to read a series of love letters between him and his lover (who is also a ghost but is thankfully benign) AND locate his corpse. At least the other undead can be stalked and defeated in combat.

Now that's what I call scary.

System Shock2. Never quite finished it, I couldn't take the tension anymore. I'm not sure I'd find it quite as dramatic now, but back then, oh yes.

Just bought Amnesia. I don't find it super-scary (so far) but it has a certain high tension level that starts to wear you down after a while. :) It has a great design & I give the designers/programmers many kudos.

I've never really played any survival horror games. But I've had my share of jump out of seat experience in other games. Ghouls in the subway in Fallout 3, waves of enemies in DOOM, etc.

I can't believe I forgot the Thief series, of all things. Considering its a stealth series, it sure does have a very strong horror aspect. Even Metal Age routinely scared the crap out of me with those creepy [censored] Karras robots. I'm rather surprised that the stealth/horror mix has hardly been attempted since, seeing as they work so well together.

It is strange. Fingers crossed for Thief 4 eh. I'm not too sure about what they've done with Deus Ex though.
