Classic Dungeon Crawler: Legend of Grimrock

-early puzzles are easy, hopefully they get a bit more challenging
I can assure you, the puzzles get a lot more difficult... just wait 'till level 4... *evil grin*

Also, only 1 warrior and 2 squishy mages is not a good idea when going up against 5 spiders at once.

Discovered that my EVGA Precision has a framerate limiter ability, so I capped Grimrock at 100fps and now can turn vsync off. Less input lag again, yay. The game ran at a near constant 250ish fps for me without a fps limit or vsync - that's with everything on High - which is why it's overheating some cards I guess. :ermm: Most games, if I set everything to max or ubermax or whatever, the fps drops to 120 or less which doesn't make the GPU heat up drawing all those extra frames all the time.

And in the meantime....this is still a lovely old skool game. Having lots of fun with it. One thing I like about it is that (for me at least) it's great for playing in short sessions. Half an hour here, an hour there. Combat becomes more difficult in some spots as you get further down in the levels, especially if you're terrible at dodging/avoiding, like me. Puzzles still don't seem that difficult. They're not like, say, Riven type puzzles.

The first patch is in the works. So hopefully it's out when I come back from vacation. I like volume sliders, and being able to set texture quality to high.

Spoiler

Done:
- vsync is enabled by default
- borderless windows are no longer topmost
- pressing ESC closes character sheet
- fixed unlimited frost arrow exploit
- improved display resolution auto-detection at first launch
- fixed a couple of typos
- removed check that disables high texture resolution setting when running low on video memory (some graphics drivers seem to report available video memory incorrectly)
- bug fix: very long map marker notes without spaces in them causes the automap to crash
- bug fix: editing a map marker that is on the same exact spot as a marker on the other map page edits them both at the same time
- bug fix: map labels are sometimes drawn partially underneath map symbols
- bug fix: topmost menu item don't work reliably in 2560x1440 resolution
- bug fix: wall text translations are not dismissed when right-clicking
- bug fix: inanimate objects can be backstabbed
- bug fix: projectiles go through doors in some very rare cases

Work in progress:
- volume sliders
- picking up item with 4:3 aspect ratio is tedious
- relax during the weekend trying not to think about LoG

Got to level 4, and I am just too frustrated by the twitch tests and the super tough/fast monsters, extremely limited supplies, and the tactical situation the game puts you in all the time: locked into a small room with a group of very tough monsters - no strategy possible - just die.

I think I'm gonna quit playing the game now. A little disappointed here, oh, well, it was only $13.49

Conclusion : game lacks intelligence, no strategy possible much of time, way too many twitch tests

Rating 2 out of 5 stars (being generous here)

Strategy largely consists of running back towards a cleared larger room where you can strafe and dodge. Thus you have to pay attention to where you can run back to make a stand. Just standing in place on 1 square narrow tile doesn't work. Tho there are some places where you do get locked in, yeah. In those cases I manage a way after a few reloads but I must admit at this point (I'm on lvl6 now) I like the puzzles a lot more than the actual combat aspect of the game.

Did you try Easy? They attack less often and less hard then. Haven't tried it yet myself, will next game.

I just wish the combat was a little more Character's Skill-Based instead of being based on your WASD Tango Skill. *Comparison borrowed from a GoG review*

For those who have completed this game... is it worth it? The 15 dollars. I've been watching a LPer (of whom I am fond of) and having the most fun watching it, however, it is clearly beginning to appear fairly shallow. What's your take on it, after beating it?

This game is amazing!

I've put about 10 hours into it so far, and I'm loving it. Currently on the 7th floor, and getting owned by a bunch of spiders and crabs, those [censored]s.

Well, if you like this type of game, sure, it's worth the small price of $15 or so. Especially since they patched it to add things like quick save and bug fixes. ( http://www.grimrock.net/2012/04/20/patch-1-1-4-released/ )

Yes it can start to feel repetitive combat/graphic-look wise to some, but even the old games in this style did that. The puzzles are fun and it's a good little dungeon-crawler.

The game looks amazing, and I know I love games like this. I just don't know if it's long enough to buy, or if it has any replay value. I don't know how shallow it is.

I really like some of the monster designs. Anybody know where I can find a complete collection of the concept art? My google-fu hath failed me.

Oh ok, I see. From what I've seen on the forums, most mentioned playtime range is about 12-18 hours, heavily dependent on one's style and of course whether you're focusing on only required win elements or trying to do/get everything, the usual stuff. Took me about 16hrs. Replay value - mmm, for me not so much. You can create a new party with different class makeups for variety in combat, but for me, like most games that have a large focus on "puzzles" as part of solving the game, once I know what they are, playing through again isn't nearly as interesting/fun. But that's subjective. Can't say what others/majority may think re:replay value, only me. :)

I see. I know 15 bucks isn't much, but it is when you don't have it. I'll probably just wait until an influx of resources come in in the summer. I'm looking for something cheap that you can dump a good bit of hours into and/or enjoy a different experience in a second or third play through with. Does it come with a nice little editor or something to make your own dungeons and quests with?

They're working on a level editor so it'll be moddable later, but it's not completed yet.

http://www.grimrock.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2118

p.s. - they have to create it because they coded the game all in a text editor originally.
