Google Glasses

So they're still trying to convince me to stop using a notebook. Being able to ask people questions and not be overloaded by nuisance information.

Keep trying.

Huh? If anything this would partially replace a smartphone, rather then a notebook?

Do any of you guys read Michio Kaku's books? He has some interesting things to say about this kind of thing. Mainly that internet contacts will be the norm in the future, and we won't use "computers" as we do now. In fact, he predicts that the word "computer" will almost disappear from the English language, because they will be essentially everywhere (on walls, in contacts, in toilets, in mirrors, etc.) and no one will even think anything of it.

Haven't read his books but I've seen just about every video of him on youtube. I hadn't thought of that, you are right. This is integrating the internet so closely to yourself that it just becomes a part of everything you do, rather than being on the internet as the thing that you are doing.

Notebook, as in paper, pencil, doesn't need charging, can doodle when I'm bored.

I don't see how these can replace a conventional notebook when you can't draw with these.

Right... but you can't get on the Internet with a pen & paper notebook, either. Or listen to your music. Or get directions. Etc.

That's fun, but i always think stuff like that won't take off as a consumer product. No one likes a big bulky piece over their head. The moneys with things like the Google Glasses in terms of design.

I actually don't care for the Augmented Reality glasses. I think it's a cool concept, but it's too bulky. Instead of working on actual hardware, we should be researching how to get this technology built INTO us, not ONTO us. The realization of this dream would be through http://phys.org/news122819670.html

Imagine a world where everyone's eyes are fitted with electronic tattoos, that display the world and everything else right onto your cornea. Electronic tattoos use micro circuits and things, so tiny that you can fit entire processing units just onto a little flap of skin. If the technology advances enough, we could soon turn our eyes into machines. No need for Google Glasses or Google Contacts, we will have Google EYES.

That's a world I want to live in. :)

Then again I don't feel it necessary to be constantly connected to the internet. Music? I have this little thing called an mp3 player or if I forget to charge that there's a cd player, I don't need to constantly have music at my fingertips either, I sometimes enjoy the quiet. Directions? There's these things called maps, that and asking people for directions.

These glasses just feel to me like a crutch for laziness.

So, a smartphone is also laziness? They do the same things as the Google Glasses, plus GPS and phone.

Agreed. Though I'd be happy for a replacement eye first.

For me yes. I don't need one and found them to be crammed with crap I didn't need or want. If it makes and receives calls and messages - I'm happy. That's all that I need out of it.

I like to know that I'm not relying on a piece of tech to get information that I might need so for when it inevitably has a malfunction I'm not gormlessly wondering how to find out how to get to a station this is before even approaching the obsession with being constantly connected to others which is a wider issue with this type of tech. Many others like them and find them useful. For me they're a lazy crutch and a nuisance.

In this world you're relying on some piece of tech, whether you know it or not. :P

I do at least have the choice of just how much of a dependency I have.

Actually i think constantly talking to a pair of glasses will be highly tedious coming to think of it. Not to mention there will be all sorts of communication issues with anyone who doesn't have an american accent. My iphone has voice control and i've never used it once.

Augmented reality is the first step towards full immersion virtual reality though, and that's cool.

This is true. I've rarely used voice recognition technology on an iPhone or Android device - the technology simply isn't accurate enough, in my opinion.
