Unofficial Patch 1.4 PC Issues Thread, #2

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 7:17 am

Dear Lordy, this thread scares me.

v1.3 was running pretty damn smoothly for me, not really sure i wanna fire up Steam as it'll auto update.

Hmmm, is the only way of avoiding the 1.4 patch to totally kill my internet connection before firing up steam?.

I'm having a certain problem with dragons after updating to the latest patch.

Whenever a random dragon appears after fast traveling or exiting a dungeon, it just circles around and never engages in combat.
No combat music is played (only the sounds that the dragon makes), I can't hit it with anything, even when I'm sure my shots would certainly hit the beast (used the console to "fly" so I could shoot the dragon at close range, for example), and after a while the dragon just flies away since no combat was made.

Since the last patch, I don't remember having a random dragon engaging combat or being possible to hit it in the air (since it never lands).

I'm not really into the main quest at the moment so I can't tell about the MQ related dragons, but the ones that are tied to word walls, etc are working as expected - they "lift off", land (vertically or sliding), hover, attack, etc correctly.

PS: The game is as vanilla as it can be - no mods, tweaks, etc.

EDIT: Also, I confirm the issue with dead dragons being fired away dozens of meters with firebolt and other spel, when, for example, Unrelenting Force does nothing, doesn't move the dead dragon a inch.

PC version 1.4.21.0, windows 7, directX 10.1 card, quad core
Basic attack does not work. Power attack does, both with the mouse and if I map my hands to keyboard keys. This is from a clean install, I've never been able to perfomr a regular attack.

Have you tried setting your controls to default (hit "T" when you have the menu open) then re-assiagn your keys/mouse buttons?
If you are using a controlmap.txt delete it first before going back to default. If you are not using a controlmap.txt, here is one that might help you with your problem:

I remember seeing something about Khajiit caravan problems in another thread - since the new patch I've seen the caravan tents with no Khajiit, Khajiit with no tents, and the normal Khajitt with tents.

I don't think this is a issue or "bug" per se. I think these guys pick up and move throughout Skyrim. They don't always just camp out at there typical spot forever. This is what I thought anyways. There like the caravans in Fallout, they move around.

This has been around since Fallout 3 probably even longer than that on their previous games before Fallout 3.

Prior to updating to 1.4 I had plugged over 40 hours into Skyrim without running into a single bug, other than hilarious physics hyjinks. After updating to 1.4 I can no longer play Skyrim.
The game will load to to what should be the title menu, however once there there are no options. No New Game. No Continue. No Options. No Exit. I can sit there and look at the dragon symbol, but there is nothing else to do here.

I am running a completely fresh install of vanilla Skyrim, and a clean install of Steam. I removed all trace of both from the computer in an effort to get up and running. No mods. No changes. Just Skyrim 1.4. Without any game. I'm somewhat upset.

I'm downloading the newest drivers at the moment in hopes something will pop up. If anyone has a fix for this... I would be devo'd to have to wait 2 months to get a patch that may or may not sort this out..

Clean install to make sure its not something Bethesda can blame on mods etc.
Walk 5 minutes, crash. Reload, save every minute, crash after three minutes, reload, walk a minute, crash while saving.
Reload, reach destination, activate door, endless loading screen.
Etc etc etc. Whats most frustrating is the repeated responses always saying "try it without any mods" when hundreds of people have reported the crashing problems with vanilla installs and the Bethesda Employees pretending to be employees accusing the customers of causing the proble. Does Bethesda acknowlegde the problem with 1.4 and when can we expect a fix?

To those of you that are posting DxDiag reports, do it within SPOILER tags!

Followed someone's advice to start a new game with the latest patch, and play a little bit from the starting sequences.
Don't know if it is related or not, but in my main save after fast traveling a couple of times, a dragon appeared and attacked right away.

Guess that is it not a bug, but a feature like it was said before, but it appears that they have dramatically increased the chance of a random spawned dragon to not engage combat in the latest v1.4 patch (?)...

Before the 1.4 patch I was running just fine with days in game playtime without any crashes. After patch 1.4 I will randomly crash for no reason just like many ppl have posted on this thread. I was constantly crashing just west of Riften regardless of which way I approached the small farmstead. So after reading some of the suggested fixes I spent a few days going through all the recommended fixes. Including starting a new game with no mods. Still no luck. Then finally decided to wipe all my ini and pref files in my games and it looked like it fixed it. I activated and reloaded all my old mods from pre 1.4 patch and low and behold, no crash west of Riften near the farm.

I figured that also fixed my random CTD and freezing for no reason too. After about 45 mins of game play, working my way from finishing Azura's quest to start boethiah's calling, I once again froze just south of the river up in the mountains near a large hunter camp over looking Winterhold. I thought it was just one of those random freezes that can happen.

Just fyi, from the first day of game play up to patch 1.4 I have never froze. Yes i have CTD for no reason pre 1.4 patch but never froze.

So I loaded up skyrim again, and thank goodness all this crashing and freezing got me in the habbit of saving often, and started trecking back to the location of the crash just west of Boethiah's shrine and bamb, I freeze again. I have repeated this mix of freezing and crashing in this one spot for the past few days now. Once again I have gone through the list of fixes to no avail.

Went to update skse and found out I already had patch 1.4.10 lol, so updating that wasn't a fix, but I redownloaded and with a clean download applied 1.4.10 patch.

I've also scrubbed clean any left over dll files that just didn't look like it belongs. Ran it with and with skse loaded. Made sure when I was not running skse that I also was not running any mods that was skse dependant.

I run fantasy skyrim enb. It was the only thing that cleaned up the damn persistant distance fog in interiors. Sooo following the suggestions about enb files causing CTD I scrubbed anything to do with enb from my skyrim directory. Still CTD or freeze same spot.

After starting over with no mods with my freezing near Riften I decided not to repeat that particular fix suggestion. At this point it's just too damn tedious to even think about doing that again.

I even went into wrye bash and changed all the conflict dates for my mods. CTD freeze etc....

Rolled back my video drivers. check

Reinstalled new beta video drivers. check

Switched off Sli. check. Came to realize when I use enb it doesn't use both video cards anyway. When I was looking through the render info in my games I noticed that it had "no" next to the enable sli. (evga 560ti 1.24G x2 SLI)

Downloaded video inspector and cpu inspector to check on my cooling. Not sure if it's running at norm. check. CPU temp was running at 135ish with skyrim running and GPU at 98ish. (I5 next gen quad core for sandy bridge 3.3G no over clock)

Fyi steam detects my system at utra high out of the box.

Cleaned out my tower. Was a waste of time, there wasn't much dust at all. check.

Turned off, turned on mods one by one. check.

Prayed to Talos to fix the freezing and ctding. check.

I found an old exe ver 1.21 and launcher. Started skyrim with those.... And froze. check.

I downloaded the ck but not sure if I have the hq textures downloaded too. I've looked through my data folder and I don't see anything that would relate to either of the hq texture updates in it. Would be a great help if someone would tell me where to look and what to look for.

As you can see I've just about done all the suggestions for solving the freezing and ctd fixes with no luck.
If anyone has any other suggestions, at this point I will try just about anything, I'm all ears.

And yes I've reinstalled both steam and skyrim twice now sinse 1.4 patch.

And here is the funny thing. It's not really funny but at this point if I don't laugh about it I will just get more angry and do something drastic like stop playing skyim lol.
My wife on a much older system that I put together for her over 2 years ago runs skyrim just fine. When I did the "check your video card to see if it can run skyrim" on invidia website it failed lol. but it runs at a smooth 60ish frames on a 32 bit windows 7 home addition on high setting. (yes I tried on my pc on high and medium and still freeze/ctd same spot.)

I put my pc together about 3 months ago with all the goodies that I could afford lol. (8G of ram)

Ok I'm gonna stop typing now cause one this is the most i've typed in on chat log/reply/resume in along time and two now I think i'm just rambling lol.

EDIT: It seems all my ctd, freeze, and black screen of death have stopped. Been playing for the past 2 days without any problems. Not a 100% sure if this fixed the issue but it was the only thing i did different from the last ctd i have to not having any ctd at all. Even in the known places that i knew were 100% ctd or freeze points in game. All i did was ctrl, alt, delete then taskmenu then back to skyrim without doing anything in the taskmenu. I was in the process of checking my cpu temp when I accidently popped back in game. For the hell of it i ran back to my last ctd point and ran right through it without freezing.
I've checked over all the other ctd points in game and not one ctd, freeze, or black screen of death in the past 6 hours of game play.

Also as a side note, if you are playing on a 32 bit system try this fix. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4192

I think it was the fix on the wife's 32 bit windows 7 system that has her running without a hitch sinse patch 1.3.
Hope this helps and works for you and good luck.

1.4 fresh install has been amazing for me compared to every other version. I could care less about XP users etc. the game should be like most games of last year optimized for 64 bit and the patches have helped along the way in that regard.
Side Note: If you are complaining about character issues or haven't done a fresh install then herp derp cry more and I am sorry but I expected these issues from Beth so if you first few characters weren't tests....sorry but start over tiem.

I don't know if this is because of the patch, or not.

Two of my characters - in different parts of the game - killed a party of 2 NPCs.

After killing the first NPC, I received a warning that I now had a 40 gold bounty on me. As soon as I killed the second NPC, the game said that the 40 gold bounty was removed because the last witness was killed. See note below for more info.

But, on neither character was the bounty removed. They started the game without bounty, and now still have a 40 gold bounty on them.

In addition, on a third character I got a 40 gold bounty for something, and no matter how much I try to talk to the guards so I can pay it, they will talk about the price of tea in China, but will not discuss the bounty. Don't know if this is normal or not? Is it too low, or something? Just struck me as odd that I can't pay it of - and yes, I'm in the correct area to pay it.

PS: There's a thread in the Skyrim forum on Steam, http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2520096 by whitelion1284, where some odd things are discussed about the bounty system.

The first issue: Each hold keeps it's bounty records separated from the rest, e.g. if you stole something in Riften and tried to pay off your bounty in Winterhold, the guards there will simply have no knowledge of it.

As for the discussion in the Steam forums, if you attack the Thalmor first, it's a crime. If they attack you first, it's not. You have to talk with them and provoke them through the dialog options. Then, they'll go hostile and you're free to kill them in any way you see fit.

Hi people
Here are the issues I have noticed in my game (long term) and they were also confirmed by multiple other users on Ag.ru
1. Problem with respawning: at some locations hostile NPC won't respawn, while containers and environment-do. I have noticed such a behaviour in Halted Stream camp, watchtower near Bleak falls barrow, valtheim towers, and, possibly-fellgrow keep. Previously all the mentioned locations were respawning correctly (except watchtower-I simply didn't check there)
In fellgrow keep I have killed the respawned necromanth's on lower level and after 30 days they still haven't respawned, although the opened doors did close, traps-activated and the containers and the environment(items on the shelf/table)-respawned.
In white river watch the blind bandit on the entrance level disappeared, although I did not kill him, while clearing the place of others. Only 1 bandiit respawned inside the cave.
2. In the "Lost knife hideout" location there is a problem of textures disapearing/become completely transparrent at the last level-between the cages. All characters-hostile NPC's, followers ang the Player(if at 3'rd person view) become "invisible", They still continue to fight though and take hits (if you've guessed correctly where to shoot)

If anyone has solution-please write to me

Look man, if 1.4 would be the final patch, then may be, just may be you could have a point there, but I don't see it as a final one. I believe there will be at least one more, so starting over each time-kind making want to press "uninstall" and not to touch the game again for at least 6 months and going over the same track everytime-kind of boring too

All right people, I have an update.
The respawn problem is DEFINETELY itroduced by some changes, made by latest patch.
I have started a new game and tested respawn with the mod, changing the respawn periods. It was ok, so...If it wa ok before the patch and was ok at new game, but was not ok after patch-it's patch to blame

I fought two dragon priests and the pale lady ( wispmother boss ). All of them stopped attacking and became pushovers.

I've a serious problem with the quest Waking Nightmare. For first, I had a problem in the Nightcaller temple entrance, because when I enter in it, Erandur don't followed me. But I've resolved this with a re-load of previous save.
Now I've another problem. After the first fight with orcs and the scene with Erandur that speak about the blue barrier and of his past, then he stuck. I need it to open the library door. Re-load previous saves don't work.

I'm also getting the dialogue cutoff at the beginning of spoken lines. Ice Atronach is very weak and I'd rather use fire atronach or Arniel's shade. Items on surfaces still randomly become invisible when I take items near them. I've seen grass turn white with no texture. Once had an infinite loading screen. And of course, the passive dragon priests and wispmothers that move around but don't attack is the worst.
