Unofficial Patch 1.4 PC Issues Thread, #2

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 2:00 pm

This is the thread to discuss issues related to running the game under the new patch. All other patch threads will be directed to this one.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1341234-unofficial-patch-14-pc-issues-thread/

Some Notes first:

The Released Patch has the same version number as the Beta Patch. The final Beta is what was released. If it does not appear that your game is updating, make sure you have the game set to update in Steam and Steam in Online Mode. Also, you may need to Verify the File Integrity if the patch does not seem to be taking hold. Steam may update the game if you were part of the Beta as the this is retired.

Quests

Note, the Quest Fixes as noted in the patch notes should work on an existing save. However some game conditions and data are part of the save and may still not work post patch. Load your current save and try it and see what happens. If it does not work, try loading a save from before you got the quest, if practical, and it should work just fine.

Mods

The patch is only for the as shipped game from Bethesda. If you try to launch the game post patch with any mods selected and you have issues, the first suspect are the mods. Disable any and all mods and try the game again. The patch can and will break some mods. If you are using any mods, you will need to check each and every mod for updates for the new patch. Add them back one at a time until you find the problem mod or mods. You may need to use the various mod tools like Wrye Bash on your mod mix again once you get the mods sorted. Just remember, new patch and mods, it is probably the mods. Look to the mods section for reported issues on the mods you use. Search first over there before posting a thread.

Performance and Stability Mods, also known as Wrappers or Code Injectors, are not compatible with the new patch. So those will have to be removed. They are also not really needed anymore. Those authors may update those mods at some point. There are threads on TESVAL and Skyboost and similar in the mods section discussing what is going on with those mods.

Script Extenders such as SKYSE (Skyrim Script Extender) and Script Dragon have or will be updated to the new patch, so check for updates to those. Check the Skyrim Mods section if you have any issues with your mods under the new patch.

I know how positively absurd this sounds, and I'm sure it's just my imagination, but since updating to patch 1.4 (and starting a brand new character with this patch), I have not seen a single dragonfly hovering over the streams and ponds around Whiterun, nor any of the alchemy fish. And believe me, I've looked.

Surely I'm just looking in the wrong places, though they seemed so common in the past that no searching was needed---they were just everywhere.

Would someone please confirm that I'm just crazy or blind and you have, in fact, seen plenty of these critters?

Just noticed that magic regen is completely borked. Magic regens faster than my character (lvl 11) can use it. I just reach apprenctice lvl destruction & can spam fire runes (or any other magic fast heal for example) at virtually no magika cost.
At first i suspected SKSE but running the game without it and no other mods is the same way. Also checked it against an old save with a higher lvl character with more magicka - same thing. (ALL regen enchantments off)
Unbelievable.

EDIT: Solved. Turns out to be a side effect, (whether intentional or not) from the clearing magic centers of the college with the gloves. I found this after searching around for a bit & the active effects listed match my characters. It is supposed to wear off (we shall see) Why my old save character generates magicka so fast is beyond me unless it's just the high level & i don't remember having such an endless well to draw from. The appearance of this just coincided with 1.4 which just goes to show that some things are mere coincidence.

Sounds like a persistent save bug, which can sometimes happen almost certainly in any version of Skyrim. I would guess you have to reload an older save that doesn't have the problem, losing progress, unfortunately.

I don't know enough about magic regen in various situations to suggest using the console. For example, the regen speed may change in certain situations (like combat, or after leveling up), and using the console may make it the same regen speed at all times.

Just finished playing the defence of Whiterun quest and the graphics became very laggy and stuttery. I have a high end gaming computer and my game is set at UltraHigh (done by auto detect at startup). Never had any problem when I played my other character doing the Stormcloak version attack on Whiterun, or any problems with graphics up to now. I can only assume it's caused by the new update and it is very annoying.

Entering Calcelmo's dwemer museum in Markarth starts stage 30 of the quest Hard Answers.

This should not be happening, as my character completed that quest (and all of the thieves guild quests except grandmastery) a long time ago.

Ok after fiddling around (seemingly endlessly) I've been able to double my framerate (up to 60) and the CTD / freeze ups haven't happened again yet (they were happening every 5 mins making 1.4 unplayable.) I've been able to manage this while still being able to use ENB & SKSE.
First thing is I reset my pagefile and it's management options. I discovered upon going to do a defrag that Skyrim had bloated my pagefile to a whopping 21 GB! ...which is insane.
Second thing, I let Skyrim reset my skyrimprefs.ini & fought the instant urge to re-apply my tweaks. Not sure which of these or both contributed to system wide freezes I was having but i thought i'd pass it on to those experiencing similar issues.
I have noticed some more than usual audio lag with 1.4 which i have not been able to solve yet via updating drivers & whatnot but i'm in a much better place than i was.

EDIT: Just had another system freeze...it just took longer.
idk...i've exhausted every possibilty that i can conceive of on my end. There's something about version 1.4 that locks my system up (shrugs).
Getting better frames but having to reboot the entire system everytime the game freezes really blows.
May just have to sit out until 1.5

Sorry if this has been answered before...
What is the version number of 1.4 stable? My TESV.exe is at 1.4.21.0

Also, any word on whether or not we'll get beta patches beyond 1.4? Is 1.4 considered the final patch? Etc.

Just tried using a bookshelf and lost some books. I put the butcher's note and two butcher journals (from Blood on the Ice) into a shelf, then decided to remove the note (since I usually just put books in shelves). When I used the shelf, only the note was in the shelf's inventory and when I closed the trade window the two books disappeared. Seems it is still possible to lose books.

1.4.21.0.4 is the third beta build that was eventually released as the final 1.4 build. There will be further updates after 1.4, but it has not been confirmed whether there will be another open beta.

Physics seem to be broken. Just started playing again and noticed when I kill an NPC, their sword won't land on the ground, but get stuck in the air or last position it was before NPC died. Same with arrows, just get stuck in mid air.

Also, NPC physics seem to have stopped working. Kill an NPC and say they fall down stairs, they just slide down and they don't animate when they die, just fall to the ground. If you try and move them, there is no physic movement, they just slide around in whatever position they are in.

No mods being used.

Big thanks to chochizenkarate who found it somewhere on youtube.

Still having issues with the Thane of Riften after completing the civil war for the Imperials. I had already been made Thane before the war, but lost it when the imperial Jarls took over. In both Winterhold and Dawnstar, I simply talked to the Jarls and was made Thane again; but in Riften, I was told I was "allowed to purchase property in the city" in spite of already owning Honeyside. After that, Maven just gives me her one-liners with no dialog options.

I posted a thread about it during the beta, but it pretty much went unanswered.

Posted this a fair bit now, but it's the only bug I'm currently encountering so I might as well try and get it more well known.

Upon curing yourself of lyncathropy, you will still not be eligible for 'Well Rested' bonus, NPC's will stay make werewolf specific dialog; "You have hair coming out of your ears", "your wolfish grin unnerves me." Additionally the 'Days as a werewolf' counter under your journal continues to increase.

I don't know if this is because of the patch, or not.

Two of my characters - in different parts of the game - killed a party of 2 NPCs.

After killing the first NPC, I received a warning that I now had a 40 gold bounty on me. As soon as I killed the second NPC, the game said that the 40 gold bounty was removed because the last witness was killed. See note below for more info.

But, on neither character was the bounty removed. They started the game without bounty, and now still have a 40 gold bounty on them.

In addition, on a third character I got a 40 gold bounty for something, and no matter how much I try to talk to the guards so I can pay it, they will talk about the price of tea in China, but will not discuss the bounty. Don't know if this is normal or not? Is it too low, or something? Just struck me as odd that I can't pay it of - and yes, I'm in the correct area to pay it.

PS: There's a thread in the Skyrim forum on Steam, http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2520096 by whitelion1284, where some odd things are discussed about the bounty system.

Note: The first time this happened - I got a quest from a Captain to enter a dungeon and retrieve a mask for him. If you're not a stormcloak, he'll be dressed as an imperial officer. At the end of the game, when you go back to give him the item, he's a stormcloak, and you have to kill him. When I finished the quest last time, he was in stormcloak uniform, talking to another stormcloak. So, I snuck up on him and killed him long-range with the bow, then killed the other one. I probably should have gone up to him and let him hit me first - I did that with another player and didn't have a problem with the bounty system as I didn't get a bounty then. The second time, I can't remember where I was and what I was doing. Next time this happens I'll provide better details.

I don't have any mods installed, and I'm patched up to and including 1.4

Sorry if this has been asked before, or has been covered previously but:

Has anyone with the new patch noticed any reduction in save game size, particularly large save files, after playing for a while?

I'm wondering/hoping that my 17mb save might actually come down a bit in size with 1.4 addressing ash piles and other similar issues.

Thanks,

If you turn off v-sync then there's this glitch where your game world (especially in dungeons) will appear to flash with water, and essentially it will be like your character is swimming one instant and not the other effectively putting away your weapons.

Please give us a legitimate option to turn off v-sync, it's a feature that cuts frame rates at half and makes the game more unresponsive (try snapping between different spots to look at, with v-sync on it feels sluggish and there is a delay between when you move the mouse and when your character looks in that direction). Not to mention how it's a basic feature that allot of gamers prefer to turn off.

Hello,

now I have uninstalled Steam and with it also Skyrim. Then I have installed both again. Now Skyrim is functional in version 1.4... again.

So, it lay in Steam. Only this helps to uninstall.

In addition to the things I mentioned in the previous version of this thread (infinite loading screens, game freezing), I'm now also getting an increased amount of random CTDs without error message (ie like before the 4gb patch). I tried deleting my ini files and letting the game remake them but that didn't help, and I've validated my files with Steam...

i dont think it works retroactively meaning only newly created ash piles will be deleted unless beth was competent enough to create a script that properly destroys existing ash piles- even then you would still have to visit the area. assuming they did all that, i dont think ash piles alone would reduce your file size by more than .1 mb.
