Hmmm, that is odd.

In my case the previous patch seemed to fix this specific issue.

All I can recommend is to try to remap everything to default, making sure the E button works to pick up books, then save your game and then try remapping the "activate" function once more within the controls settings menu.

Is there any driver software for your mouse you can use to remap the "E" key to your mouse button? That's what I had to do before the patches.

I'm also on a laptop. Logitech had some driver software for my mouse that I was able to use to remap the E, D and A keys to mouse buttons before the patch seemed to fix this issue for me.

Very few games rewrite the keys they refer to in dialogue/tips in-game when you change them in the settings... I would hope Skyrim becomes one of those games.
I remember a few hours in (i think I got encumbered?) trying to drop an item, spamming the "R" key on it and nothing happening... Then finding out you have to hit your "sheeth" button by visiting a forum (not user friendly).

I don't know the code, but it seems a rather rudimentary thing, to refer to the button that's bound inside the ini file instead of the actual letter "R".

Why it was chosen to not allow players to freely bind keys to the numpad is a mystery to me, considering that it was clearly enabled for use in Oblivion...a game on the PC should NEVER have any restricted keys on the keyboard...there are a large majority of players who have been using the numpad for ages on many different games including yours.
I'm left-handed, and have been using the numpad for fps games since Quake 1, and including FALLOUT 3 AND OBLIVION. So I buy Skyrim, and they've simply taken the numpad away from me. And I can't figure out why.
From the my quick test you still cannot map the NUMPAD which is just wonderful....

I am hoping I am doing something stupid bar being lefthanded
Soooo any word on if there is going to be an official fix allowing mapping of the numpad?
Any updates on a fix? Im a lefty and the game is unplayable for me with wasd :(

I'm right-handed.

I like to bind to the Number-Pad.

There are hundreds of other users who do similarly.

Why was this overlooked?

I'm also right handed and I use a NumPad - can you elaborate on the problem? You are not able to bind any keys at all? Are you using 1.3.10?

For all of those who want to bind a set of dual weild hotkeys, there's a nice mod:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4273

Lets you equip your hands with your setup, then bind that setup to F1-F4 so that you can easily switch back without the insane standard hotkey system. I think the latest version works for armor etc as well, but I haven't tried it.

I'm happy to elaborate BootySweat. The version I'm using is 1.3.10.0. When I seek to bind an an action like [forward] to the number pad, I am told that the 'key is reserved'.This particular issue has been mentioned several times throughout this thread, and I am aware that there are some third-party fixes such as 'AutoHotKey' which allow one to get around the reserved status - so the main question I am asking is not, 'how do I fix this?', but rather; 'why does it need fixing in the first place?' - as this seems an incredible oversight on the part of the developers.

Check out my post (#70) and the first option is not a third party mod...it's part of the initial game files that you installed. You can either extract the file yourself or use one from someone that has already done so. Just edit it as you like and the numpad problem won't be a problem anymore and no third party mod needed. This is only an issue for those that are waiting for Bethesda to extract the file for them.

Ah, suddenly #70 makes so much more sense. Cheers, BioFringe.I'm still curious as to why the Numberpad is initially marked as reserved though.

Yes, the interface and keybinds are a mess by default. I really don't understand what they were thinking other than it must be side effects of this being a console port and they just didn't spend the proper amount of time to make it all PC friendly. I'd never defend them since it really is a mess for most users but the fact is that I've been playing without UI or Keybinding issues since day 2 all because of what I posted so it's just one of those things that I think more PC users should be willing to resolve for themselves...so they can get on to enjoying the game as I have.

Oh, and if anyone is interested here's more info that I posted on this subject with links that might help many to better understand how to get this done: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1317442-very-weird-problem-need-tech-savvy-help/page__p__19809525#entry19809525

Lastly, if anyone has any specific issues that they want help with in regard to any of the info that I've posted please feel free to PM me. I'll provided the best help that I can to get this issue put into the past for you so you don't have to worry about it ever again.

Best of luck and enjoy.

Not an excuse for poor interface as far as 'dual-wielding' of various sorts, but....

If you want to throw some money at it, using an N52 keypad or programmable keyboard gets around the issue. You can set 5 macros to mash '116,226,336,446,556' for examples and then set your favorites accordingly. (In my case, 1-5 are 5 spells and 6 is a shield, which allows me to functionally play a Shield-Mage without wanting to kill myself).

I already used N52 and it took me a while to realize I could do this (as I initially assumed there must be some delay in equipping stuff that would make it annoying or impractical) but that doesn't seem to be the case?

I really hope the keybinding issue will get addressed properly. Below is one of my posts from a couple weeks ago.

--snip--
Yeah, key (and mouse) mapping is still borked!
I think part of the issue is that some 'in menu' actions (like the press 'R' to rename enchanted item) don't have an actual controls menu equivalent. Beth is just going to continue running in circles by permanently assigning these keys, resulting in the problem being fixed for everyone EXCEPT those who are using that key for something else.

Come on Beth! Fix it properly!!! Give us a controls menu that allows us to change the key/button assignment for ANY and ALL in-game actions!!!

Edit: So just to list out a few - favoriting is still broken - can't rename enchanted items - some menu's I can 'tab' out of normally, others I can't.

This is the way of it, I'm afraid. We weighed the clarity of swapping out the button help with whatever the user had mapped versus the enormous amount of video memory required to load up every possible piece of button art every time you entered the Inventory, and speed/memory won out.

That is as planned.

Listen, this doesn't make any sense as an explanation. Aside from the fact that it couldn't be more than a few kilobytes of memory because it's just displaying text on top of a square, and even if it were being done such that the art was huge, they would only need to load the ones being used.

In the key binding menu they're able to "load up every possible piece of button art" just fine. That's where you re-map the keys in the first place, and all of those display correctly when you're remapping them. So seeing as they already have a menu in which this works, and it doesn't eat up enormous amounts of video memory, this can't be the issue.

I suspect the real reason that the button displays don't update is because the programmers found that the keys didn't remap properly, and so even when they changed the menus to match the remapped keys, they found it didn't display the correct controls. Rather than address the root of the problem they just left the menu displays static, so that players who remap their own keys are basically aware that they're doing so at their own risk and can't expect the menus to work after that.

wait a second Ghaleon, are you suggesting that rather than holding their hands up and admitting there was an oversight, this explanation from Socrates is just some 'party-line' poop he 'has' to feed us to keep his job - because that's tantamount to calling him a liar man, and that's not cool

Sorry to necro this, but this is still a huge problem. I cannot pickup books that aren't in containers or add/access favorites without first resetting my keybindings back to their defaults. I am "ok" with it not updating to tell me which key should be pressed, but at the very least the key I have assigned "should" actually work. I would assume that since E is bound by default to Activate and Take/Steal, since I changed Activate to use D, D should take/steal the book. Same with the favorites with J. But none of it works without resetting the controls back each and every time. This also still exists in the current 1.4 Beta.

I had not played for a while, but when I re-installed yesterday I couldn't believe this issue still has not been patched out. Unbelievable.
