From what I've heard, you tend ot max out your damage for destruction in the last twenties (when you have the best spell and the perks)....but the trouble is, thats not the end of the level scaling.....from that point on your continue ot fight stronger enemies andi t actually becomes bad to level up more.
Thats the problem with destruction....there is not +destruction damage enchantments unlike weapon skills....so you specificly capped at a ceratin level.

There ARE potions though... and they last a healthy minute.
Destro is not supposed to single handedly win you the game... no more than 1hand does.... You still need armor... and blocking.... and archery for range.
A full mage using Destro, illusion, and conjuration will wreck shop. Yes.... 2 Draemoras handles most things... that also requires 100 conj which takes a while w/o grinding... which I strongly recommend against doing.
Destruction lets you stun lock and deal out steady, reasonable damage. It's not over the top like melee weapons... but then, you're not right up in the thick of it. And you can swap spells around faster then an archer can sheathe and re-pull out his bow.
I think it could scale a little more... but my level 44 spell-sword can just rely on destruction for most fights and win with no problem and minimal risk.... on expert. It's the stun lock that really makes it work TBH.....
