Chunkyman's Skyrim Thread: Random Issues, Concerns, Etc.

Hmmm...well, that does go hand-in-hand with my suggestion that http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1327636-a-suggestions-and-quibbles-thread-for-sane-people/ to avoid people being able to simply eat food and drink potions in the middle of combat to heal. Have one potion on your belt for emergencies? Fine. Two? Okay. Seven? Hell no. As it stands I could enchant a whole mess of light armor to boost sneak and archery, sneak around shooting people, then if anybody saw me and headed toward me, I could freeze time and completely change armor from head to toe into stuff that boosts heavy armor, block and single-handed skills and health or stamina, then when I get dinged up a bit, freeze time again to glag down health potions until I'm healed.

At least in Oblivion you couldn't repair armor while enemies were around.

You are very correct.

It makes the game less challenging and breaks immersion.

It still is the number one thing I hate about Skyrim, in all seriousness. ; ;

Wait, what?

I suppose the end product prices are based around you finding the ingredients in the wild and thus being pure profit.

Cooking is a terrible feature in my opinion however because of how useless it is.

While I agree that cooking could still be better, it is not as useless as I once thought. Using some of the stews that ramp up stamina regeneration basically allow you to be able to sheild bash or power attack constantly without worrying about stamina levels, basically as long as you have one point of stamina you can do both. However, besides the stews (beef, vegetable, and venison) I find most of the other recipes useless. I would have rather them give you different buffs for 8 hours of the day than a few measly points of stamina or health. Also, it would have been better if they required that you eat, drink, and sleep.

Right and as I said, that Stew Stamina combo basically breaks combat in the same way that Chameleon did. You can force opponents into a Stun Lock that they can never get out of thus they can never fight back.

That's probably logical, although I've found that salmon steaks and rabbit haunches do give healing power per pound carried comparable to low-level healing potions, and hence are useful for lower-level characters.

Well, see my previous comments about Camping Simulator VIII: Skyrim Edition. I don't know if many people really wanna be faced with the annoyance of having to constantly eat and sleep. Drinking shouldn't be an issue anyway, given the abundance of water and ice in Skyrim.

I'm gonna have to try this and see if it's all that foolproof.

I've decided that perhaps some food items are not that bad in terms of health points per pound. Rabbit legs and salmon steaks are only 0.1 pounds apiece, yet they restore like five health each. How much do potions weigh? Half a pound? So then you're getting 25 points of health back per half-pound, compared to 25-150 with health potions. So perhaps not that great a deal, but as the man said, it's all free and the ingredients are easy to find - while alchemical reagents might have to be bought and can be rarer than food ingredients.

Perhaps cooking is of more use at lower levels and loses its usefulness as you gain the ability to find or make the more powerful health potions.

For a simple restore health potion I can easily find blue mountain flowers and butterfly wings for free with very little effort. Heck they don't even cost and arrow or the swing of a sword which would be required for most of the meats. So I am not so sure that cost should be considered into the equation here. The only good foods really are most of the stews, which bolster stamina and health regeneration, which there are really not enough of, I think the whole system needs to be expanded on.

I had a thread on horses a while ago, but it was closed.

Also, what do you mean by "what's next"? If you're referring to what my next thread will be, there won't be one because I'm not allowed to make "complaint" threads anymore.

Use a 2 hander for range, and do nothing but power attack. You will stagger-kill anything, including dragons.

So don't make a new thread... keep it going here! You still have 133 more topics until we get to spellmaking... :)

That's probably the best approach. Certainly better than flooding the place with multiple complaint threads.

Very well, I'll add a few more.

A Problem With Skyrim #134: Level Scaling

Oblivion was heavily criticized for the level scaling throughout the game. One of the talking points during the development of Skyrim was how the level scaling would be fixed. This (sadly) was not true. While it's been improved for enemy level scaling, item level scaling is nearly the same as it was in Oblivion.

Item level scaling can still be seen in dungeon chests. The higher your level, the better the loot. This ruins both the balance of the economy and a sense of accomplishment for completing difficult tasks. Once you reach level 30, most loot is high-end gear. There sin't a whole lot to spend money on in this game anyways, and finding thousands of gold worth of loot in every dungeon makes gold useless.
It also ruins the reward for completing difficult dungeons at low levels.

Complete a dungeon filled with regular bandits at level 1? Iron dagger of fire.

Complete a dungeon filled with draugr deathlords at level 1? iron dagger of fire.

While enemies no longer wear full daedric like in Oblivion, their strength increases with level. Since the economy is already broken due to item level scaling, this doesn't really fix much. Enemy level scaling dulls the sense of exploration in the game. There are too few "Oh... crap!" moments because the world is leveled to be fairly close to your level. Remember running into a deathclaw at level 2 in NV? It created unique moments of terror that made the game exhilarating. When you got to level 20 and could kill those deathclaws, you got a sense of accomplishment. This is a sense of accomplishment that Skyrim lacks. For peaches sake, the end boss can be killed at level 8!

The problem would be solved if they abolished item scaling and either severely toned down level scaling or switched to geographical scaling.

What do you guys think? Discuss! :starwars:

Geographical scaling is sorta in place already, but it REALLY needs an overhaul. There will be several mods for this very soon (where's my dang CK? Arg!). An example of this watered-down geoscaling can be found quickly during the College questline.

Spoiler
You face a skeletal dragon, no matter what... you could have skipped the MQ entirely, not even going to Riverwood at all -- and IT WILL BE THERE!

But there is very little else, aside from the obvious placement of giants and mammoths (which are tough, no matter what level you are until mid to end-game), and as you said before, the loot scaling kills any real reward for going "beyond your level" and daring to fight stuff you really shouldn't be.

Fix: Some static-level enemies applied to gameworld, and a re-do of boss chests.
-Loth

Edit: Also loot-balance enemies, and an overhaul to item pricing, particularly with regards to enchanted items. They are worth too much in vanilla.
