"Magic, by its very nature, is volatine and dangerous" - Tolfdir
I don't see a lot of one/two-handed/bow users complaining they need smiting or enchanting.
Or that melee users need a lot of armor to survive, or that archers need stealth or something.

Sure, you can be a master of destruction, but it's your own fault for not using all the other abilities that would improve your strength in your chosen style of combat.
I am not able to increase the potency of destruction, unless I use alchemy, always loathed alchemy. Destruction becomes somewhat obsolete against high level oponents. I also do beleive in having a spell for every purpose, I enjoyed making spells designed to combat specific threats but I can not do this in skyrim.

Only God can cast spells continuosly without draining mana. The game doesn't have mana potions for nothing. I think lightning is probably the most main stream destruction spell. I believe it's not so much the spell's damage but the npc's resistence to it. But there aren't many NPC's that are immune or resistant to lightning in the game.
