"Dumbed down?" Not so fast.

I salute you sir. That initial playthrough is always a beast.

It was pretty frustrating. I also finished Megaman 1 and got to the next to last stage in Battletoads :celebration: Ah, those were real achievements.

But honestly, i doubt i'd had patience for stuff like that any more.

Well said. It was incredibly tedius. I got into the habit of repairing my gear and then recharging my weapon after every single fight. You had to. Instead of playing the game and having fun, I was doing this incredibly tedius 'housework'. I was not sad at all to see the first removed from Skyrim. I would not mind the second being cut either.
This shows excactly that many people are in fact glad Beth removed a few things from the franchise. Most people seem to forget that not every TES fan loved every single piece of repetition in the older games. Evolution is always better than stagnation, or else Beth could release a new Daggerfall every couple of years.

On second thought, that's pretty much how Nintendo works, maybe it would be more profitable for Beth after all.

Arma 2 is the only fps game that I respect. It's actually more of a military simulator than a typical fps. Great game done by a indy company. Can't wait for Arma 3.
Well, they're not indy anymore. After Codemasters screw Bohemia over and took the OFP franchise to later pummel it into the ground with OFP2, Bohemia released ARMA1 & 2 and is developping ARMA3. Even in the CoD/BF/GoW genre there is a place for real shooter "simulations". It's like the ARPG genre and Demon's Souls.

Looks like Mass Effect joined the mass market dumb down of games but at least Elder scrolls has difference buttons than space to run, space to jump, space to cover, space to come out of cover, automatic jump.
Which was the dumbest idea ever. Seriously, even on the old N64 controler you had enough buttons for these things. But BioWare only wants to tell the story anyway, it's almost like Final Fantasy now.

Nah that's fine, I don't really care for the later Final Fantasies. Except 9. 9 was fun.

I have to say I kind of hate every JRPG by now, but (and this is a very big butt) until FF13 I could understand why people like it.

Let's just say if Beth turns TES6 into a hall walking simulator like the newer Square titles, I will officially join the MW fan faction and burn every TES game I owned since daggerfall. Except for Skyrim because I got it digitally and I don't want to set my router on fire.

My issue with Skyrim is how predictable the game is. There's few things to worry about when entering dungeons and the like - diseases are so weak you hardly even take note of them, and you can now reliably deal the exact same amount of damage, every time, to enemies. This leaves combat largely predictable except against spellcasters. There's no fear of getting trapped in dungeons or losing your equipment. What's the point of doing persuasion checks and failing if the NPC will completely drop the point and allow you to continue talking to them?

Skyrim is a game that allows for so much improvisation on the player's part that your character doesn't feel truly tied to the game world. I hate to just link an earlier post of mine, but it basically sums up my sentiments on the skills system and the game at large:

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1357882-skills-have-never-really-been-done-right/page__view__findpost__p__20492670

I'm reminded of games like Dungeon Hack, Eye of the Beholder and Stonekeep. Great first person RPGs.
I've been playing first-person party based RPGs as of late, primarily http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/realms_of_arkania_1_2 which is practically a pen-and-paper game all its own. I'd forgotten just how important character skill used to be in RPGs until I found these.

Yeah, diseases are a little on the weak side. Poisons too. Granted, my current character is running around in the Ancient Shrouded Armor with 100% poison resistance, but I never remember being poisoned by anything on my warrior character other than a frost spider spitting at me.

Games are interactive. The less interaction the more like a carnival ride it is. I want a game. I very much desire control and performance.

Have to agree on weapon degradation. I admit I went into the construction set in both Morrowind and oblivion and tweaked it so it took 100x as long to degrade. I don't mind the weapon charges as much and they do add a layer of granularity to magic weapons.

When did RP became synonymous with numbercrunching?

Here's an example of an early RPG in "3D":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxNNp2Y6YTM

Dungeon Master came out in 1987. In essence it's not very different from Skyrim dungeon crawling. Just that you have (up to) four characters instead of one. All combat is in real time.

I'm guessing It's those still longing for BAldur's Gate style games.

Are you talking about the PC version?

Baldurs gate is more about strategy, not number crunching. I mean there is assigning stats and tracking the progress of your party members abilities, but it's not as bad as MMO's like WoW, where there is like one "OP" build for everything. I hate games like that because you don't really feel like you have the freedom to play and develop your character however you want. Inevitably, someone will come with "oh, you're not really specced for dual wielding. NOOB! LOL!!!!"
