The direction of the Elder Scrolls

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 4:46 am

I don't think anyone would complain if Bethesda spent more time weaving better stories, included more factions and deeper, longer quest lines. They need to stop going in the opposite direction, and people need to stop supporting their growing affection toward less detail and thinner quest lines. I think most of us here like the game, but the series, while going in the right direction in some respects, is swerving iinto a ditch in others.

Are you considering Mass Effect to be an RPG at all? Because that entire series (well, 1 and 2, I haven't played 3 yet) is awesome.
Mass Effect 1 and 2 werent bad but the whole series died for me after the Mass Effect 3 debacle

Looks like the future of TES will be aMMO, sad ti think , because for all i know it looks to be another WoW clone with endless level grinding , hundreds of different servers and little miniworls, with no interaction betwwen them, carebearing and powergaming
as sa single player franchise i doubt beth will have the resources to continue with it once they are commited to the mmo so we better enjoy this game and everything that came before it

Honestly, I don't have much of a problem with the mechanics. The bugs are kinda annoying, but tolerable (I play on PS3). My issue? They halfassed the faction quests. As a dedicated mage, after all I did to earn my spot at the top of the Mage's Guild in Morrowind... getting it handed to me on a silver platter like that? My literal reaction was "Wait... that's it?" The Archmage robes were kinda nice, but at the same time, kinda lacking. I found my Single School robes far more useful.

Now, I'd largely forgive the loss of all the variety in the spells and gear they had in previous games, had they done a huge focus on story and pacing, but... By the Eight, that just felt rushed and last second! Did they spend all their time on graphics and forget about themost important part? The story? I don't like those padded radiant quests, they're just... well, "get this, done. Fetch that, done. Clear this place, done. Beat up that guy, done. Steal this, done. Plant that, done." Really? Nothing more complex than that? In and out and it's over?

*sigh*

I hope TES6 fixes the quest problem. The quests are laregly what I played TES for...

Now don't get me wrong - there are some things I liked about the new system. Perks, for example, mean that you need to focus on how you build your character, rather than do the 100-fest that previous games did. Now how you build your character matters in the end - and each person has a unique character. Now, some trees got things done better than others (lockpicking... really?), and there should have been something like that for races to help them be more than minor differences, but it was a step in the right direction, IMO. It helps the character feel more like the role they play, rather than simply a path they took to becoming uber. I also liked the start of a focus more towards player skill than arbitrary stats. Given the ARPG nature of the game, that seems to just feel right. Of course, it was far too simplified, and needs quite a bit of work in order to be more of a skill driven game, but hopefully the next TES will involve a more tactical element than "run up and smack guy" or "throw fireballs back away".

Agree totally. I couldn't believe how quickly and easily you progress through each factions quest line. It doesn't seem real at all. I just recently went back to the college to see if maybe I missed something. Surely there was more I was supposed to do? Sadly, no. I really had completed the "Mage Guild" quests and I really was the leader of the college. Kind of laughable.

OT

Gram Play ME3, you'll love it...up until the last 5 mins. my advice, stop playing at that point, the point being where its clear the end is nigh trust me the game is very blunt about it. at that point just stop playing.

They need someone to provide the meaty game content for the next release. there needs to be attention to depth, which this franchise painfully needs now.
