Honestly, I don't have much of a problem with the mechanics. The bugs are kinda annoying, but tolerable (I play on PS3). My issue? They halfassed the faction quests. As a dedicated mage, after all I did to earn my spot at the top of the Mage's Guild in Morrowind... getting it handed to me on a silver platter like that? My literal reaction was "Wait... that's it?" The Archmage robes were kinda nice, but at the same time, kinda lacking. I found my Single School robes far more useful.
Now, I'd largely forgive the loss of all the variety in the spells and gear they had in previous games, had they done a huge focus on story and pacing, but... By the Eight, that just felt rushed and last second! Did they spend all their time on graphics and forget about themost important part? The story? I don't like those padded radiant quests, they're just... well, "get this, done. Fetch that, done. Clear this place, done. Beat up that guy, done. Steal this, done. Plant that, done." Really? Nothing more complex than that? In and out and it's over?
*sigh*
I hope TES6 fixes the quest problem. The quests are laregly what I played TES for...
Now don't get me wrong - there are some things I liked about the new system. Perks, for example, mean that you need to focus on how you build your character, rather than do the 100-fest that previous games did. Now how you build your character matters in the end - and each person has a unique character. Now, some trees got things done better than others (lockpicking... really?), and there should have been something like that for races to help them be more than minor differences, but it was a step in the right direction, IMO. It helps the character feel more like the role they play, rather than simply a path they took to becoming uber. I also liked the start of a focus more towards player skill than arbitrary stats. Given the ARPG nature of the game, that seems to just feel right. Of course, it was far too simplified, and needs quite a bit of work in order to be more of a skill driven game, but hopefully the next TES will involve a more tactical element than "run up and smack guy" or "throw fireballs back away".
