Why would any of us buy another Bethesda game?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:20 am

Obsidian developed the game, to be fair they dont have the experience Bethesda has working with that particular game engine.

Just got to hope they can patch it to be in a workable condition.

I don't think Bethesda would care if any of you didn't buy another one of their games. This forum only has not even 180k unique members. The most active posting day ever was 10/19/10 which was the date the game came out when there were about 3k people online. Now remember that there are other boards on here for series with large followings like TES, Doom, Rage, etc so that 3k number is probably pretty close to the number of fallout-specific posting. Not everybody is complaining, demanding a refund, etc. so lets say out of that 3k there are 2k people complaining. VGchartz (I know, not entirely reliable but no other source really) says the game sold 1.65 million copies combined on all platforms. That means .12% of the people who bought the game have come to this forum and complain about it. You are more likely to die in a plane crash than buy fallout new vegas and subsequently post about how bad the bugs are

I couldn't agree more, I'm stuck around 22 hours in this game due to not being able to load my saved or auto-saved games.

It happened once before also in Vault 3, I had just pick locked a hard-locked door. There were about 2 or 3 Raider's in there and when I shot one through V.A.T.S. it completely locked up my game, I turned on my Xbox and both my saved and auto-saved wouldn't load and gave me an error, it seemed upon the loading screen it was frozen.

Now I'm forced to make a new character? I hope they don't assume my 22 hours invested into their game is not good enough for their concern..

I wouldn't be so mad honestly, until I think back when I purchased Oblivion for X360 around December 2008 I remember I bought it brand new and not even an hour in the game I'm stuck in the sewers of the prison/jail in complete DARKNESS, I'm not saying I was without a touch or anything I'm saying all graphics were black, like it was unavoidable I made a new character and tried several times - Not saying I didn't enjoy character customization.

But this is two games that I paid full price full, I didn't get far enough in FO3 for any trouble maybe a few lag spikes here and there...

So maybe all the games you've released in this last two years have had.. a small chance of not working? or bugging at any point in the game making it unplayable? or just something as simple as making it unable to load any saved games making it completely an unfinished game - I feel like you sold me a faulty merchandise I'll consider spending my money on your future titles after I wait at least a month or two so you guys patch all the bugs out.

For one, statistics (and almost all data) is subjective BS. It never actually represents any accurate measurement. That said, just because a small number of people proportionally came on to this forum compared to the number of sales (which are shelve numbers anyways) doesn't represent the constancy of issues Tess postings represent. Consistent the array of issues, the severity of freezes (I had three today), and the actual acknowledgent by gstaff in response to patches, I would say this is a big issue for everyone. No company wants to be associated with faulty product.
Just seeing the couple copies of this already on used shelves tells me that there is a large number of unsatisfied players out there. I wouldn't call it large in a pandemic sense, but I think the reason you see more issues with many of the people on forum is due to our niche consisting of a mix of hardcoe gamers and regular gamers just wondering WTF.

I've never posted on any forums, but I got fired from my job last month (either the worst or best timing with FONV and Black Ops weeks apart) but I have come to this one daily. Originally to figure it all out, make demands, rant, and passively exercise some communication skills but SOLELY because I truly live this game. I can't stop discussing it with my roommate while my girlfriend has developed a deep relationship with my cat.

So basically, I keep reiterating that I am not exactly sympathizing with Beth for releasing a very buggy game, but I AM tired of peoples rationalizing of the market based on the games current state. It's not as deep as everyone wants to take it. Simply put, the game is getting fixed on some level. If it isn't the echoes of it's mixed misfortune will reverberate for some time in the game community. Especially when the press starts doing it's year end reviews and wrap ups. This will only put more pressure on Beth and other publishers to get it right on deadline.
Think of it this way...most games that I buy are substandard in their total composition. FONV is amazing in it's composition and requires some deep tuning for it to be what it truly is. Where as many games are just what they are...working yes, but shallow experiences that rarely go further than their concept. Especially when you consider how some games (at least in my dustfree game library) have such a short playthrough or replay value.
Yes, many games are either online multiplayer experiences with longer shelf lives or they are grand games of this nature that can be unfolded again and again over long periods of time.
It's not a clear marketing decision for the consumer to simply turn their backs on the game for being ostentatious. This is not the film industry or he car industry that has been refinig it's product for a hundred years. This is an exponentially evolving industry that is driven by money and maintained by the ever growing populace of players that grow broader in demographic each day.
It's obvious that it's not just a few people with a bad run of disc burns or older xboxes. Beth knows this. We know this. Clear the forums of the squabbling. I myself can barely keep track of all the bugs in the game as I encounter a new one every day.

Good thing Steam has achievements then.

Ha ha, Nowhere NEAR the same thing... I do like how my XBox and PC achievements stack together...

I experienced the problems and crashes from the game recently after playing for many many hours. I'm not a hater, nor am I a fan boy. I play a game and I either like it or don't like it. That being said, I feel this corruption in the game shouldn't have come out. I expect these kinds of bugs from an MMO, but not from a console game. that's why I buy console games to begin with. That being said, bestheda will be the first and only gaming company I will not preorder a game from. I'm not boycotting it, but I will not buy any game they distribute for about 5-6 months. Like I said, not a hater, I don't even go to game boards at all unless I experience a problem and this one is a huge problem.

the simple soulution (while not universal) was and is do not trust "exclusive" downloads from gamestores. i never used them never had an issue with a bug i wasn't expecting from this engine...npc stuck in rocks "blasting" junk when you step on it clipping etc...the only odd one is the 1st person arm glitch....but that is just like the deathclaw hand from fallout 3 imo

and most people have not had game breaking bugs. true many have and that is unfortunate but you cant call a game "broken" unless EVERY copy is broken. Erase your exclusive dlc and dont play the game for 9 hours straight. and when you see the game starting to "chug" save. for each character i have i keep at least 3 save slots and never had an issue. fans of bethesda and to a greater extent obsidion should know by now that their games...while great ALWAYS have bugs.

we get it.
some people are having issues with the game.
most though are enjoying the game.
what does that tell you about the broken game aspect?

The fact that NOTHING you suggested does anything to prevent the bug from happening... Do you not realise you are simply lucky enough just not to have encountered it yet?

Besides, even if the people who get the bug are a minority, it is sure to number in the thousands.

It has nothing to do with our gaming habits, or our saving habits, it's a very busted game.

I have the NO DLC error as well so i'll wait til this is fixed.
40 hours in the game, i work so i dont get a lot of time to play but i love the fallout series and just wished more attention was paid to bug and general game testing before release,i know there is a lot of pressure from major shareholders to push out a game but more thought needs to be applied before we get another episode like this.
Bugs can happen to any game now, this is more buisness now than entertainment i have seen a lot of changes in my 35+ years of gaming, but dev's need to stick to their guns and not be pushed to release a buggy game to appease the shareholders.CUSTOMER comes first.

Not just me but a lot of other players have noticed this is really becoming a video game industry wide problem. Far to many companies are rushing games out without actually taking the time to "FINISH" the game and make sure everything is working. Instead they rush to release a broken unfinished game like Fallout New Vegas and just rely and patches and updates to solve everything they didn't want to take the time to do in the first place. Look at the 360 new layout. People are saying they are lucky if they make it past the new Xbox logo into and it doesn't take 4 mins to load. Microsoft should have fully tested it first before making everyone take it on.

A game critic said it the best about this problem when he reviewed Age of Conan which was also very broken from the start,

"We gamers would actually prefer if companies delayed the release of a game for a month or so in order to make sure everything in the game WORKS so the game can be fun. Instead of rushing out a game that's completely broken and unplayable and just releasing patch after patch to fix crap that should have be fixed before the game came out, which is sadly becoming the common trend in the game market today. Look at Age of Conan. Finally after the 5,000+ patches where released the game now plays and works like it should have from the beginning."

Like others have said above, I won't pre-order from Obsidian or Bethesda again. I've never had so many frustrations with a full-retail-price game before... ever. I loved Fallout 3, and FO:NV will be a genuinely great game, if it ever gets fully patched. I don't pay money to be somebody's beta tester. Some game developers have earned a reputation with me for good quality, such that I'll pre-order their games in advance, sight unseen, with full expectation of a quality entertainment experience. Obsidian and Bethesda have certainly lost their shot at that reputation, and the next time I give them a thin dime, it will be only upon the strong recommendation of sterling reviews from friends and trusted critics. If it takes their future games months or years to achieve that status, so be it. My gaming time is too rare and precious for me to let it be wasted by some half-assed game's broken save system.
