Why would any of us buy another Bethesda game?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 7:17 am

I have noticed a polarity in many of the posts here.

Many people are saying they'll never buy a Bethesda game again... I really don't pay too much credibility to these statements as no distinction has been made as to whether or not a fix will ultimately change their minds. I assume that they're stating that Bethesda has crossed the line and shall never be redeemed and to me that doesn't seem like a reasonable consumer response, particularly if you're a fan of the product.

Many people are saying that they won't buy another Bethesda game until this bug is fixed. I am of this view and I would assume that this group of people makes up the majority of people who have been hit by the bug.

However, starkly opposed to these two views are people who chime in and say something sarcastic like: "Yeah, you'll boycott bethesda games for sure... until TESV and FO4 is released".

Now such a jab might be appropriate if people are boastful enough to state they'd boycott Bethesda even if they make a fix. But it not an appropriate statement if Bethesda does not fix the DLC bug.

I played Geard of War on the 360 right through to the final level on insane difficulty, Knowing Ramm would drive me literally insane, I decided I'd play co-op on easy for a few weeks for a break from the intensity. Unfortunately a bug caused me to lose all my progress through the insane (and half of the hardcoe) play-through. I did not realise at the time that I could access the final evel via online co-op play, so I remained bitter towards developers and as such I did not buy GoW2 and haven't raised an eyebrow in response to GoW 3 media. It turned me off the game for years.

I just bought GoW for the PC as a means of getting myself back into the series, but unless I can somehow score myself an xbox co-op game that will allow me to complete the final level on insane I will NOT be buying GoW2... I am THAT bitter about the bug and there are many other games to play instead.

This is exactly how I feel about New Vegas, and being an open ended RPG with so much case-and-effect dynamics, more is at stake. It is far more frustrating to lose progress in an adventure that you'd fine tuned to your enjoyment and personality than it is to lose progress in a shooter.

having an unplayable game has made me bitter and no amount of love for Morrowind or Fallout is going to make me buy another Bethesda product until I can enjoy a long, reliable, if somewhat buggy, romp through New Vegas.

So, while I consider it a bit of an exagerration if someone says they'll boycott the company even if the game is fixed, do you really think it's unreasonable for someone to stay angry at the developers if there is no fix? Do you honestly think we'd go and buy another game?

I'd appreciate your thoughts... and more echoes of my particular stance, which I think is the most universal and most constructive:

Give us a playable game and we'll keep buying your games

Oh and Please don't tell me there are "ways" to avoid the DLC bug, it's unavoidable and it's a game killer... pure and simple. if you have avoided it you have simply been lucky. QED.

P.S. I am also fine with losing my progress/save files, as long as I can have assurances my next new character will have a reliable save file system.

Didn't Obsidian develop F:NV? So shouldn't people be saying "I'll never buy an Obsidian game again."? I mean, the development team at Bethesda (Bethesda Game Studios) didn't make New Vegas so there's no reason to boycott a game made by them.

Me personally I have no problem boycotting a video game company. Obsidian developed the game and Beth went and published it. Before you put your name on a product that product should actually be tested or else you will be held accountable. Thats the say the world works. My current Boycott is Activision (Since they have low quality standards but apparently higher standards than Beth or Obsidian) and Treyarch (Since they have never made a good game even when they were forced to use infinity wards coding) I have no intention of backing down from it and especially not for black ops which looks like a Micheal Bay too many explosions paradise.

So in short, yeah I don't mind boycotting something that doesn't hold up to some basic standards.

And add to that, a huge portion of the buyers of NV can be dated back to Morrowind, even Arena... If the whole Bethesda thing is part of the hook, then it can be considered part of the problem.

I certainly didn't buy new vegas because I care about Obsidian.

I take it you never got yourself lost in and in love with Morrowind or Oblivion? Those two words are reason enough for old-time Bethesda fans to be forgiving...

But you do seem like an extremely picky gamer. Most activision games I play, even from both COD developers, are great and you seem to be demonising them for superficial reasons... So Treyarch like more explosions? It's not like they voided their bowels onto a platter and sold it you....

From what you have said, I class you as a "to throw out the baby with the bath-water" gamer...

Ahhh... how can you come up with something like this without backing it up with some sort of logic?

How is a wide-spread, game breaking, save-file bug NOT a determinator of a broken game?

Are you trying to be a troll?

Well, I bought Fallout: New Vegas because I'm a longtime fan of the franchise. I don't care for The Elder Scrolls series, and apart from that, I couldn't name any of their games. Whether Bethesda's backing the next Fallout or not, I'll be buying it, end of story.

I put 200+ hours into morrowind but I didn't play oblivion all too much. I loved fallout 3 and I dealt with the occasional freezes. For competative FPS Trayarch has never done a good job. They were the bad series of COD. the Infinity ward ones were good the treyarch ones were bad. Activision overcharges for their DLC's and the bulk of what they produce is crap. How many guitar hero's do you need with the tony hawk interface to realize they are just lazy and unoriginal when it comes to making games. While that may be somewhat superficial I'm not big on a franchise that charges 60 bucks for slight variations of itself every year. And yes I don't play madden.

There are too many issues for this game to have ever made it to the shelves. If the issues are resolved sometime soon (with in a week or 2 even though its been 2 weeks already) then that would be great since this game, from what I actually got to play of it was looking great.

Look you hit the nail on the read regarding Tony Hawk... and Activation seems to be adept at using existing templates to make new games (Playing "Gun" felt like I was playing THPS at times, never got into GH). Consequently, I have bought only a couple of the recent Tony hawk games, and the last one was enough for me to not be inclined to buy another... but that is more wothy of the term "generally not interested in anymore" instead of "boycott" - I mean, a boycott is a strong word and something you do when things are really bad, like a well-known game breaking bug, not just when things are generally hackneyed or uninspired.

As for competitive FPS, I guess I rate the single player as more worthy of judgement than MP (which probably makes me a minority) so therefore I see no reason to discriminate against any of the recent COD developers as their single player experiences have all been really fun, functional and challenging.

Yeah I think you are right. Boycott is probably not the right word to use. As for first person shooters I spend more time playing the multiplayer than I do the single player. While I do complete the single player (usually multiple times) I spend far more time playing multiplayer. Its just my personal preference when it comes to potential competitive shooters.

After the New Vegas experience I don't think I will be purchasing another game from either company without waiting a few months and checking forums for issues. New Vegas played (for the 10 hours or so I was able to play it) like a great game. Unfortunately the technical flaws are just way to drastic to deal with. If I didn't really like the game and want to play it I wouldn't be on this forum. I'm just hoping for a fix soon.

Why would I boycott Bethesda Game Studios(who had absolutely nothing to do with this game for the most part) when Obsidian is the developer? However, it is evident that Bethesda Softworks(amazing some people still don't know the difference between the two) rushed Obsidian.

Still, the game works perfectly for me so I won't boycott Obsidian.

I have canceled my pre-order of brink, due to the lack of testing in FO:NV. If this is the level of professionalism Bethesda is putting into its games.

I hadn't preordered it yet, but my level of anticipation for it has gone to basically zero. I wish I had money to WASTE on games, but I don't. That being said, I have been a fan of FO for a long time, and will probably still buy the fallout mmo and any future single player fallouts, so long as we can finally say adios to gamebryo.

If you love Fallout, then you must love the lore... and I assume that you don't have the cash to continually update to a PC, so don't bother having a gaming rig.... so you're limited to Xbox for now... yes?

And what if the xbox doesn't allow you a stable enough game to explore to your heart's content and experience all the new additions to the canon... surely that would reduce your desire to get into future Fallouts?

That is the case for me... Well I COULD buy it for PC... as I have a good gaming system...

BUT I WANT ACHIEVEMENTS!!!

If NV had been GFWL I'd be there now and expecting to later buy a fixed xbox version, maybe in a re-release which I assume WON'T have the letter GOTY associated with it.

Hit the nail squarely on the head about not being able to maintain a gaming rig, or I would go the PC route. I am actually playing on a PS3, but I think we're both in the same glitch boat:) Absolutely, if the freezing issues are NEVER resolved I'll have to rethink buying future fallout games. Now that you mention it, I think I'll play FO2 for awhile. Vault 13 here I come.

Funnily enough, I installed that the other day to have my first play through... Didn't get far.

Let me tell you it's very hard for some of us Bethesda fans to get into the series, but we know you won't judge us too much as I am sure many Fallout fans have loved the gameplay of Fallout 3, been intrugued by games like Morrowind, only to find that they could not get into it... mostly because how dated the game is.

Sentimentality is a powerful thing... which explains why I am:

A) Obsessed with this bug to the point where I procrastinate on this forum regularly
B) Will forgive everything once it is fixed... because no company makes/publishes RPGs quite like Bethesda does.

As much as I hate to say it.......this. And I love the new take on the series that FO3 represented, everything needs to evolve to survive. Unfortunately, NV was not an evolution, just a buggy step backwards. I do love the game(what I've seen of it), just can't play it.

All I gotta say is I played Oblivion, CodMw2, CoDWaW, gears, and whatevers....I love trying them all. It's hard to group the games together or fault them on different technical levels.
What I mean is; I think my two favorite games of all time right now are Fallout New Vegas and Der Riese on CoDWAW. They are two completely different games that suffer from significant issues and also two incredible strengths. They both can almost certainly steal 3-6 hours of your life, and yet both of them are broken in some ways.
CoDWaw Der Riese is one of the best co-op experiences I've ever shared but the leaderboars are completely broken by a HUGE hack community (that's in part built into the game).
None the less playing a serious game of Nazi zombies can take hours of patient economy and gun building.
Fallout New Vegas lives on the other side of the pole where game fluidity and "unbugginess" are sacrificed for an immense experience that keeps unfolding.
It's almost ironic the day after our American Midterm elections where many people are arguing issues with our government in much the same way that people here are demanding immediate change (and fixes). It's like everyone has reached a new level of entitlement when it comes to the responsibility of our government or in this case Bethesda to FIX iT RiGHT NOW!!! Regardless of the size and complexity of the issue.
I appreciate everyone keeping Bethesda aware of how broken this game is, but in the same light let's try and help it along by trying to fix the problems instead of boycotting games that everyone here seems avidly interested in playing.

Ps. And for the record...this game is a huge mess of cool experiences that many are getting to experience. I'm STILL not sure why only certtain people are getting completely locked out of the game, but many of us have been lucky enough to play around the system a bit and stay unbroken.

What I really hope Bethesda would do is leapfrogg the profits from this game and Brink and import the engine and animation into the next installment.
I would love to see fallout streamlined a little of it's fat (places that were created but don't any part of the game at all, even as setting dressing) and the 1st person and third person aiming mechanics made a little more fluid. Even Mass Effect 2 tried this to make it a more of a fun shooter).
I love the style of Fallout NV but the engine simply seems incapable of being a huge open world and a smooth shooter.

I would agree completely if it was just general bugginess. I literally can not continue the main story line. Different beast all together. Glad you can play yours though, at least some people get to enjoy it.

I have to argue that without the fatal flaws that NV is evolution in many ways... even if I do keep referring back to Morrowind.

Firstly the faction system appears excellent. I will enjoy future playthroughs where I will do my very best to stay on the good side with all of them until the most fateful of decisions have to be made. I really like being able to be that smooth-talking bad-ass that everyone respects, and the one who will ultimately decide who is right or wrong.

Reminds me of Morrowind, you had a large array of factions to choose from, although I doubt NV will allow me to exploit the game like I did with Morrowind, becoming a high ranking member of The Thieves Guild, The Fighter's Guild, Hlaalu House and Telvanni House.

Secondly, the survivalist and weapon and ammo mod system is a fantastic addition. Of course t reminds me of alchemy in regular RPGs, of which Morrowind and Oblivion were particularly rewarding. This is mostly premonition though, as my repair and survival skills remained too low during my playthrough for me to really gauge how useful the system could really be.
