Question for immersionRP diehards.

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 5:05 pm

From a roleplay point of view, how the [censored] do I justify finishing forbidden legends with my warrior? they [censored] force me to join the college of Winterhold, and otherwise I'm stuck with a cool ques unfinished and 2 pounds of quest items in my inventory.

I also hate those NPCs that do not sleep, again speaking from a RP standpoint, like all the innkeepers, the Talos preacher and some random guys at inns who don't even venture outside, no matter how well armored are they (Or my bugged redguards at the entrance of Whiterun, who simply live there).

So for those of you who're really into the realism with regard to immersion and RP, I have a question. Do you limit yourself to a realistic amount of gear that you can carry on you at one time?

'I don't really limit carry capacity. I just limit what skills my character can use.

If I have a warrior, the only things outside combat skills I use is lockpicking (and dabble with alchemy). I can't stand leaving a door / chest locked.

Similar restrictions on my stealth bowman.

As a matter of fact I do. On that note, I find it strange they didn't implement bags to put on our horses. Some situations make it perfectly plausible to tie the horse on a tree near the entrance of a given place and just make trips to load it with the more heavy stuff. Bothers me not having something like that implemented in vanilla version so RPers could enjoy it .

But then again, we're talking about a system that makes all characters begin with the same stats, and we're limited with tinkering with Magic/Health/Stamina. I love TES and don't think Skyrim is a failure at all, but it's becoming less and less of an RP experience. It's too bland on that respect. I miss stats, even if the overall experience is still a very pleasant one.

Horse Satchel was one of my favorite mods for Oblivion, I wish they had adopted that in Skyrim.

I know that my companions can carry my loot, and because of that there is litterally NO reason for me to have a horse. Its so slow to mount/dismount and with the inability to fight ON the horse, I find myself getting more frustrated with the damn beast than I do enjoying the minor movement speed increase.

TL/DR : Horses are a waste and I wish they had bags so they had SOME usefulness.

So, back in the days of AD&D, there was this thing called a "Bag of Holding" that was an enchanted sack or satchel that you could store things in that would raise your carrying capacity. There were often arguments about how much they could carry, as well as the dimensions something could be to actually fit in the bag, but I digress. When I'm playing Skyrim I just imagine I have one of these and that way I can loot all I want.

I RP within the confines of the game, so in terms of carrying capacity, if my character can carry 345 units them thats what he can carry regardless of items.

I basically outline a simple archetype for the character, kinda based on the baldurs gate 2 archetypes. My RPing then becomes dealing with the world as the created character.

I also like to allow certain world events to start to change the characters views and moral compass. eg Daedra Lords quests

Funny. Never even considered imposing my own limits on my carrying capacity. Even when I've felt that carrying 40 war axes was absurd and become slightly annoyed by the utter lack of realism, I've never thought, hey, I have control over this. I'm obviously not an immersion/RP diehard, but it is interesting that it never even crossed my mind.

Why ponder whether it's more "realistic" or "immersive" to restrict your character's inventory when you're playing in a world filled with mythical and supernatural creatures and you slay dragons, singlehandedly, no less?

Because I'm insatiably curious. Also because a lot of players who RP or play for immersion ponder things like this then post about it on the forums which gets me thinking about it because my brain never shuts down.

This is part of the reason I asked, because it only just crossed my mind today, and I wondered if I was slow on the uptake. I've seen players post a number of things on these boards that they incorporate into their playing to conform to whatever RP/immersion standards they follow that have never occurred to me before.

The only immersion standards I adhere to is avoiding overpowered or end-game gears. I just traded my dragonbone set for a full set of ancient nordic armor that I found, which has significantly lesser armor value but it really brings out the nordic flavor of my character. Also, it looks great on a female char!

Out of curiosity, what do you do with all that coin you make?

So far, I've bought several of the properties you can buy and their upgrades, and a lot of expensive arrows, lol. Oh yeah, a LOT of Grand soul gems that I've been using for enchanting. To sort of give a little bit of balance I have a very low speech skill too so I actually get ripped off by the vendors. I haven't taken any speech perks except for maybe the lowest level one you can take. Believe it or not I don't actually have all that much money as I seem to find a way to spend it on something, lol.

YES! It's somewhat sixy, but not so much like the "bikini" style armors that it's totally absurd and couldn't possibly be armor. When I first saw Aela The Huntress in hers I HAD to have it for Lydia. So I consoled her up some, lol and she tells me she loves looking hot for me when we go out on adventures!

I limit myself to two swords, a bow, and as many arrows as I have for my weapons; my dark brotherhood armor, my Krosis mask, and various enchanted jewelry that could come in handy for apparel; and basically only potions dealing with health, magicka, and stamina. I tend to operate in cycles. I will always visit my house in Whiterun to regroup after I gather a certain amount of loot. I will usually sell to Belethor until he's broke, and I will also see what Eorlund and the chick who runs the Warmaiden have to offer. I loot really valuable armor or weapons I might find, as well as jewelry. I also have developed a hobby of collecting books. I don't know I just think its fun haha. I don't eat or sleep usually. I don't see the point in either as I'm a werewolf. As for travel, I will fast-travel to wherever is closest to my goal, and then I will run the rest of the way. Although I do take time to explore every now and then. I actually had to adjust from my strategy in Oblivion, which was carry a ton of stuff all of the time. That was mainly because I was paranoid about my armor breaking so I would rotate weapons. Maybe my next playthrough I will do something like only use carriages for fast-travel or something. I don't know.

Nah. In Tamriel, everyone has a giant back pocket they can carry stuff around in. It's just part of the rules of the world, like eating and eating but never going to the bathroom or time shooting past at 30x Earth speed.

It's all perfectly in character :)
