Question for roleplayers

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 1:59 pm

It happens I was playing The Sims 3 just before buying Skyrim and, although its love on first sight, The Sims is impossible to keep playing after lets say, 25 hours... now Skyrim, well there are always some new interactions to surprise me, and it happens everyday, Skyrim is just too big and the chances that different things will happen are plenty more than Sims.

Morrowind is far better than Skyrim, except for the graphics. But Story and Options far exceed graphics.
I agree Morrowind's story is superior but gameplay wise (for the most part) TES games are only getting better. E.g. Whats that my sword skill is level 1 because i just started... swing and miss, swing and miss, die from mudcrab. :(

Try Arena or Daggerfall. Those games are brutal.

I often agree with that. But Morrowind's graphics are SO far behind even Oblivion that I just can't get over it. I wish I could. I really do because I'd love to go back and play it, but I just can't. I probably played Morrowind for 10-15 hours total. I just couldn't ever really get into it. Now I know I'd like it but I can't get past the graphics, sound and poor animations.

My advice to you, is to get over it and play it. I just got an old X-Box and Morrowind and I have not played Skyrim or Oblivon in 2 weeks.

Or get a PC and get every HD texture pack, long view distance and graphics mod you can. Even a dirt cheap PC should be able too now a days =D

I don't think my ideas do carry more weight and I don't want to stop anyone playing how they want to play, I'm just trying to get a better understanding of how others play the game. And yes it is a RPG so yes to an extent i do role play that i'm a dragon born battle mage that has to save the world but thats not the point of this thread, which is more about taking the RP elements further than the scope of the game.

I didn't mean you specifically really, but those who would enjoy TES more if it really didn't have RPG elements and was more like COD in fantasy land.

Took me around ten hours to finally get into it, forty-four to beat it, but I'd rank it as the third best in the series. I have yet to beat Daggerfall or Arena, but Oblivion and Skyrim surpass it, in my opinion.

By roleplayers I mean who eat, sleep, get married, decorate homes, believe their character has some sort deep connection with other characters in the game.

I'm just wondering why do you bother playing skyrim? Isn't Sims a better game for you? Sims has all the things you want but non of the stuff you are not interested in. ie Forums are filled with "I want to make my own home", "I want to adopt children", "Khajiit are cute" etc. but almost no threads about "Hey I want not too broken AI", "I want challenging combat, not that buff enemy hp, debuff my hp", "Hey beth could we have a game were we aren't demigods?"

I'm not trying to offend anybody here but wouldn't Sims simply be a better game for you. It even has an expansion with a fantasy setting.

And I also roleplay, infact I roleplay all of my games even the non rpg games.

Because... it's fun to roleplay? Seems like an odd question coming from someone who supposedly roleplays themselves. Moreover, why should anyone have to justify playing the game the way they want to?

Also it's pretty arrogant to assume someones tastes when you don't even know them. The Sims is an incredibly boring game and I've never been able to play more than fifteen minutes of it without wanting to do something more productive with my time.

To be honest this thread seems like a way for you to complain in a roundabout way.

These are two very different games I don't see how you can suggest it as an alternative. Also this is a RPG and anyone is free to play anyway they see fit. Sims is a fine game for those who want to play it. But Skyrim has what I want in a game for the most part. And the hardcoe mode you speak of would be optional just like in fallout.

First of all: I don't consider eating and sleeping to be roleplaying. They're more gameplay rules.

I roleplay because Skyrim is the PERFECT game to roleplay in. Everything from skills to clothing, armor, weapons, homes, soul gems, the schools of magic ... They can all be mixed-and-matched to create a totally unique character. And then you have the entire world to explore and for your character to live in. And then you can get into the character's head, make decisions and such based on what your character has done and who your character is. You can immerse yourself in a huge fantasy world. That's why I roleplay.

The Sims is a people SIMulator, not an RPG. It's more specialized to controlling groups of people, and helping them live through their ordinary, everyday lives.

That is the flaw in your argument right there, you say "if you like killing things Skryim might be the better game for you" TES series has never been about just killing things, it is about the lore, the story, the quests, the characters and the character development. If you want a game to just kill things, I suggest Call of Duty or a similar FPS.

I never said TES was only about combat but it is mainly about combat. Character progression is focused on your ability to kill things, pretty much every quest you get either requires you to kill something or fetch something from a cave that is filled with things for you to kill, you play as dragonborn who is born to kill dragons. There is no woodcutting skill, everything from your characters past is irrelevant as now you just need to kill.

So you are fine with melee combat that requires you to press 1 button inorder to win?
So you are fine with magic being gimped on higher levels?
So you are fine with complete lack of challenge in comabt?

All of the above represent the major part of the game (I could even say that the entire game is focused on things above).

No I'm not fine with any of those things that's why I'm playing Skyrim. I'm sorry your game is apparently like that but the gameI have isn't like that at all. Once again . I am faced with the ugly possibilty I got adeluxe version of the game asI apparently have on every TES except Daggerfall where I got the crap version.

Wow! again you simply do not have the same game I have or maybe you 're just kind of blind. I don't think anyone can answer your question because you either don't get it on a primal level or just have an agenda. IMO

It is not mainly about combat at all, it is about those things I stated in my previous post. Your character development argument depends on the type of character, as another member said you can be a thief and not kill a single person. There are more skills than the combat skills. I do somewhat agree with you on the quests I suppose, I think there should be more alternatives to be able to talk your way out of situations using skill checks like Fallout: New Vegas.

Back on to your original post, Skyrim is an RPG as I have already said, The Sims is a real life simulator. They are completely different types of games to cater to different people's needs, it should not be one or the other. I and many others have already explained the appeal of role-playing in Skyrim, now I understand why it may not appeal to you but I think you should be a bit more mature about things and see it from other people's point of view instead of pointlessly arguing.

This has been a very one sided topic but i thing the OP has a fair point. From what i've seen the 'hard-core' roleplayers want a lot of features that would make the gameplay worse IMO (required eating and sleeping etc.) and are passionately against things that could improve gameplay for non-role-players (perk reset comes to mind but lets leave that to the other topics that focus on that,
Spoiler
also i've seen complaints about how far you may be able to alter your appearance in dawnguard
). I'm not saying that anyone shouldn't role play as there are a lot of positives but don't force that style on the rest of us.
Required eating and I believe sleeping too has been done in Fallout as an option, same thing could be used for skyrim.
I'm a rp'er to hearth when it comes to TES, I'd really like to see a respec option actually.
Both are OPTIONS might be worth checking the definition of that word for some.
