RAGE just went from a definite buy to only a rent

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:32 pm

I have been waiting to hear the first bit of info on RAGE's multiplayer modes and when I did I have to admit it was pretty lackluster.

http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/rage/preview/rage-multiplayer-shocker-forget-typical-deathmatch-its-all-about-cars-and-cooperation/a-20110417163846618095/g-200708061214527077. But what it basically says is don't expect anything like TDM or CTF or any actual versus multiplayer on foot, like you would expect from a shooter and especially one made by those who invented the FPS genre. Instead they chose to go with vehicular combat and a 2 player co-op mode, with levels. The co-op sounds cool but I already know what that's going to to turn out like. Two World II where the levels get boring after 1 week. The vehicular combat stuff sounds a bit like this one gamemode I played in Burnout mixed with Twisted Metal. You gotta capture checkpoints and blow others up or you can just do a vehicle TDM.

Why no normal on foot human vs human versus modes? Not even the typical TDM modes? If they wanted to get creative then go the route Left 4 Dead and Dead Space 2 did and give us control of the mutants with one team humans one team mutants with different abilities or something. We already know there are going to be dozens of different mutant enemies why not capitalize on that and use it in multiplayer? Don't take out the most popular form of multiplayer though and replace it with a twisted metal vehicle combat knock off!!!

I'm sorry but 10-12 hours of open world singleplayer, even if the AI for the enemies are impressive and the story is great, does not justify a $60 purchase 'for me'. If it does for you more power to ya but I need replayability and that usually comes in the form of multiplayer.

Nobody wants to race each other in a FPS, they wanna shoot peoples heads off. This game isn't Twisted Metal and they shouldn't be focusing the multiplayer on the vehicles IMO.

I thought Rage was going to be good at 1st but now I've got major concerns about it. I think I'll pass or wait until the price drops before getting it but I'm definitely reading the reviews before I would get this.

I don't mind this at all. If I want to play TDM or CTF, there are already hundreds of other games to choose from. I rather have a new multiplayer experience than doing the same thing in a new game yet again.

People don't be afraid to say what you feel. RAGE's singleplayer is still going to be the bomb and for that alone I'm getting this game but you can't sit here and tell me that vehicle only combat and no on foot combat is "Perfect" like two of you already voted for. Stop svcking up to the devs.

Respect your opinion but how is this "NEW"

Vehicle combat has been around for a long time. Twisted Metal and others have been around for a long time... If they wanted something NEW well there really isn't anything they could do but the least copied or repeated idea would be that of Left 4 Dead/Dead Space 2 where one team is humans with guns other team is some form of zombies/aliens or in RAGE's case would be mutants. The Mutant team could have different classes of mutants that each do a different thing and you could choose what one you wanted to be before spawn. The human team would have to try and complete some objective or just simply get from point A to B without dying. That would actually fit this game perfectly I think and after watching the new trailer I think there are going to be plenty of unique mutants that they could choose from. Just because TDM and CTF has been done before doesn't mean it's old or stale. It's the backbone of any multiplayer game and each game brings a different flavor or feel to it. I'm sure RAGE's TDM would be totally different and unique compared to the likes of Call of Duty, Battlefield, Gears of War, Brink, Shadowrun, Rainbow Six, GTA IV, etc you catch my drift. They are all separate and unique. Most are fun.

Wrong choice of words i guess. But you know what i mean. It's always like this. Same in the Skyrim forums. Anyone that came on there that brought up a complaint about the game or something that wasn't in the game was received with ill regard and everyone voted on polls just to back the game 100%. It's like they can do no wrong and make no wrong design decisions and some [censored] eyes. I'm pretty sure the id software fans that have long been with them and supported them are not happy with this news. I can guarantee that actually...

I think this is awesome..
I am mainly a Local player.. Over the past decade, I have watched game developers atrophy their MQ's away in favor of having a more robust multiplayer. To me, this spells out that the actual game is going to be good.
ahah, i like that its pissing people off, too.

BTW, they are including a game editor (IIRC) in the PC version, so i wouldnt worry about it staying the way it is for long.

I don't know the MP might be fun it might be a quake 3 arena with vehicle. I mean come on there are like a hundred MP shooters coming out this year. I actually like that Rage decided to stand out and take a chance :)

Actually, John and the gang are really trying to break through their own quake-ish sell, so I love them even more now because of this;also, vehicular combat will rock some serious smokin a$$!

if I do what I think then people would have no life, would not buy ps3 or xbox 360 or pc would have due to insults to each platform but I do what I want and I know that id Software never fails me and makes fun games and with good story, pioneered the Deathmatch game mode and I think that rage does not need that, but buy it to play Deathmatch Cod so I bought rage no matter what they say and it will be a great game.

I think this multiplayer sounds quite enjoyable. I grew up on Mario Kart and this sounds like it will "jive" with me. Why are you sad that there is no TDM, or HQ, FFA, or ROFL? Just think closely about the gameplay of Rage and tell me if you think that it would be a good idea for a COD-style multiplayer. If your answer is "Yes it would", then I don't think you researched this game enough.

I will buy it. It's an id game, that's enough for me.

Even if it disappoints it will be worth having.

That was always a horribly stupid idea, playing as zombies, enemies, it completely ruined everything.

That's why I liked Killing Floor, there was you and there was zombies, and survival, not the idiocy of L4D.

Seems like a pretty strange idea.

But who knows, it might be way better than whatever you want.

Sounds cool to me.

Death match CTF ect ect, its been done to death. That they are trying something new, sounds interesting. Plus Rage isn't going to be a shooter like doom or quake.

Plus did you play quake 4's multi-player? I think I did once.

Another thing i thought aboutthis morning on the lines of multiplyer.

Does it make sense in the Rage setting?
Are there thousands of thousands of wastelanders around the area of wellsprings that would be battling each other?

You have games like MW... its all out warring between large factions/armies. A complete bloodbath makes sense int his setting.
I dont think it really fits Rage.

I applaud ID's decision on this game because its going to stand on its own merits, rather than being a dathmatch/ctf clone with Rage avatars

I was never too fond of competitive multiplayer so I wouldn't be disappointed the lack of a decent mode for it which I believe it lacks.I do love the co-op and will definitely say that I am not disappointed with it.I do think it would have been better without the competitive multiplayer and have ID work on making the single player longer.

It does seem odd that they would rely on car combat over more actual fps modes. I'm hoping for the best but aren't the cars in this game more of a secondary concern over on foot game play? Games like Twisted Metal are fun but they also focus purely on that form of gameplay ensuring good handling and a variety of balanced weapons.

I can see it being a fun mode, just not something I will play regularly. Then again if they can perfect vehicle combat for multiplayer along while making a strong FPS campaign I guess I cant complain.

I disagree with the title of the thread only. RAGE is still a game to buy, simply because of the EPIC single player exprience...

then again I am a mega-idSoftware fan, and I'll be buying the Rage comics and novel when they are out. I won't even read the novel, just buy it
---------

ANYWAY, I don't like the idea for vehicle-focuse multiplayer, but I'm not complaining and I'll try it out

Nobody wants to race each other in a FPS, they wanna shoot peoples heads off. This game isn't Twisted Metal and they shouldn't be focusing the multiplayer on the vehicles IMO.

I agree with that part. Rage shouldn't try to make a racing version of Twisted Metal for multiplayer. I thought the mutiplayer on Rage was going to be a HUGE wasteland filled with a vast amount of players battling it out in DM and team DM, with up to 200 players in a server... that would have been EPIC in the open world of Rage.

That was always a horribly stupid idea, playing as zombies, enemies, it completely ruined everything.

That's why I liked Killing Floor, there was you and there was zombies, and survival, not the idiocy of L4D.

I agree with that, playing as mutants would be stupid, but remember that's only my opinion and I don't mean disrespect. I see playing as monsters as an RPG thing, but it's just NOT for FPS games...
-------------------

ANYWAY in the end all I can say is that my mind is at war, because it's hard to know what fits Rage. I guess too many people alive and warring it out in a post-apocalyptic world makes no sense, and DM has been done with every game.

I honestly wouldn't mind playing the mutiplayer, it's not something I'd do often, but it sounds fun I will say that

Why does everyone have to equate racing with combat to twisted metal?

From what ive seen of he earliest game footage, racing is part of the local in-game culture.
If i were to relate it to something, it would be pod racing..

I think its the same for not having huge online deathmatch modes..
it doesnt really fit the culture of the game.

I think this move should be lauded, because its a move that speaks to the game having integrity instead of selling out and putting as much crap in a box as possible, just to move more copies.

Is there really only 10-12 hours of single player content? Is there a link for this?

Come on ID...you are ignoring what made you so great and ignoring what we gamers have grown to love. To make a game this incredible and noy to have team based multiplayer ( 1ps ) is like buying a corvette without an engine. Have you guys just got lazy or dumb? Not trying to insult, just trying to wake you up.

If anyone listened to the GTV E3 coverage, theya re putting out a game editor with the PC version.
Doesnt do much for consolue suers, but PC users/modders will probably have something set up pretty quick, no?
