Is Rage worth $20?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 5:06 am

I'm not really into FPS games, the only FPS I've played and enjoyed was Portal, Bioshock 1, and Bioshock 2. Any other FPS (Halo, CoD, Battlefield) completely bored me I guess you can compare TES and Fallout, but that is pushing it very far lol. I need at least a decent story that is still interesting.

Rage is on sale at my workplace for $20, along with Borderlands: GotY ($20 as well). I'm definitely getting Borderlands but I'm not sure if Rage is worth buying. So what are your thoughts on it? Try to sell me on it, if you can lol.

For 20 bucks you can't go wrong.

And in my opinion Rage is way better than Borderlands.

Along with being a good FPS it has a form of crafting and a mission system akin to RPG's, though it is not a RPG in any signifigant way.

Rage has no story. and it gets boring after you beat it in 2 hours. and there aren't any enemies after you beat it.

I think it is, but you can probably pick it up for less elsewhere.

You won't beat it in 2 hours by the way, that's a little - shall we say - economical with the truth. Yes, there are things to not like about it, so why not just say them straight out instead of making things up? ;)

Anyway, back on topic. It's a fun but flawed game, with quite an old-school shooter feel, so your dislike of Halo and CoD won't stand much against it - it's not in the modern shooter camp at all in other words. I'd say go for it.

2 hours? What??

It has a story, it just doesn't have 500 cut scenes/choices to slog though. I got 12 hours out of the game, exploring everything, and doing all the side stuff.

Sure it's worth $20. A cutting edge engine with a meh game but it is entertaining for a while. My buddy uses my controller to do the driving stuff and if you like that kind of thing it is a good 'combat racing' game. The best part in some ways ...

Lmfao. There's trollling, dude, but then they'res making yourself look stupid.
----------------------------

After you beat it there are online modes, coop and Road Rage.

I am spending alot of time on Road Rage, it's much much better than I though it'd be. Sure there are the rallies, but there is also Carnage mode, it's deathmatch in your vehicle. Like TM I guess, but it takes alot more skill... physics are crazy and totally chaotic.

Rage is worth at least $30, so of course it's worth your $20

Of course the game is worth $20. I spent $60 on it and despite the short single-player (which wasn't particularly shorter than most single player games released nowadays) it was amazing to play. I have issues going from Rage to any other game because the graphics are that good in the game (obviously graphics aren't what gives the overall game value, but they help).

$20 is a steal for this game.

Go for it Bubsy. If you do enjoy the 1st playthrough, a second is easy to go to. I'm just about to finish 3rd at the moment, I'm trying to collect everything, so it's taking longer than the first time i played it i think. Still good fun, I always look forward to be able to drive around the Wasteland inbetween missions.

Some big reasons you wouldn't buy it is:
- If you like HD textures (Up close textures can be quite fuzzy, but are the best I've seen from a distance)
- If you don't have a mostly descent computer, i don't know that it would run particuarly good.
- If you don't like corridor shooters (Most of the mission stuff is corridor shooter, but some aprts are quite open)
- If you cannot stand racing or driving in any game

Really though, get it and give it a go, I reckon it's well worth it. Majority of people who play it do like it, but there are some people who really don't like it. Hopefully you'll fit into the majority :D

I'm not a Rage fan... it's not more fun than Borderlands. I've done at least a dozen playthroughs of Borderlands with different characters and different styles of play. It's too much fun. Rage is a good game, but it doesn't have the variety of Borderlands. It's worth $20, but I'd wait until we got news on DLC. Rumor has it we'll be hearing "something" in April. I'm checking in every so often to see what's up. I'll do my second run through of Rage if DLC comes out, but it certainly doesn't have the replay value that Borderlands does.

If you're looking for a decent story, Rage is lacking in that department. I'd definitely recommend getting it if you're into shooters. The gunplay is fantastic compared to other FPS games out right now. And there's car combat and racing if you're into that stuff.

For $20.oo you can't go wrong. People can nit pick its problems to death, but its just an arcade style game and the only serious issues it has are low resolution textures and the fact its too easy to beat. Its biggest selling point is the 60fps which does make a big difference in arcade style games and is something id specializes in.

If you've played and enjoyed the Bioshocks as you say, you will enjoy Rage which is a similar combination of oldschool firstperson shooting with upgradable weapons/character/cars.

Rage doesn't have the claustrophobic feel of Bioshock but definitely a similar type of gameplay.
This is not your permanent gun 'n' run shooter like Halo or COD!

Go for it!

I may have a stronger opinion about it since there's not a lot to do offline.

Two hours to beat Rage? Hyperbole if I ever saw it. The first time I played the game I got to the last mission in about 15 hours and then took another 15 completing the missions I had skipped up to that point.

Anyway, the storytelling in Rage svcks but the shooting is VERY well done and the racing is very enjoyable even on its own. Overall, I'd say that the game is well worth your $20.

Just keep in mind that at any one point on eBay, you can find RAGE (on PC, haven't checked consoles) going for $20 AUS, so it mght be the same where you live. If you are not confident in buying it yet, chcek eBay and see if they are priced well, then buy it later if you feel unsure. But the genereal concensus so far seems to be to buy it :D

I'm really not into first person shooters but I do like them when they have a good environment and story built around them. I spent $20 on this game and it was a great buy. I realy liked all the mini games especially the card game.

It's probably worth noting that the overall feel of Rage (to me, at least) is that of a Japanese RPG crossed with an FPS. That means that character development is along a fairly tightly pre-defined path, but you've got some freedom to experiment (a little!) within the constraints of that path. Take FF7 for example (which it reminded me strongly of during my first play-through) - there you could choose which Materia to equip and which characters to have in your party, and the choices Rage offers operate in a similar manner - pick your quick-use objects and decide which items to craft (and how many of them). By contrast you won't find anything resembling the RPG elements you may be more used to in it.

The story in Rage is appropriately shallow. It's hokey, contrived, and somewhat clunky, but it serves it's purpose which is to act as a backdrop for killing things. It's really just an excuse for moving you from point A to point B in the game; don't know if that was the intention or not but that's how it worked out for me.

Graphically it's a mixed bag. If your idea of "good graphics" starts and ends with how textures look up close then you're going to be bitterly disappointed in what it has to offer. If you're looking for bling, for ostentatious eye-candy, for "pimp my gfx" then you'll likely also be let down. On the other hand it has some of the most amazingly fluid animations you've seen to date, an extremely high polygon count, and the non-repeating nature of the texturing is - once you take the time to fully appreciate what it is you're looking at - quite astonishing.

Fair warning that the ending svcks.

The gameplay is divided into missions, and you have some freedom of choice in terms of the order to take missions in (you need to get a bit into the game before that comes about though) but each individual mission is quite linear. The nature of the missions is very much in the "go to place X, pickup item (or do thing) Y, return to person Z" style; there's some minor variation from this template but that is what most of them are like.

As an FPS it doesn't compare to the typical modern military shooter. There's no squad-based stuff, no "return to the combat area" crap, you can play the full thing without ever once using ironsights, dialog and cutscenes tend to keep the game moving rather than get in the way.

I suspect that this is more like the kind of FPS you don't like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4yIxUOWrtw

Rage gameplay on the other hand looks like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxFXX9rNiaQ

Your asking people who months after this pile of crap was released, are still involved in the game's forums. They like it. People are also known to like stamp collecting...

I just finished this game and i am angry, i feel like i was [censored]. I want desperetly to tell the designers what i think of them and their creativity. Heres what the story has in store for you. In the middle of the game, one of the main characters tells you that: 1.) were close to solving the puzzle and 2.) that by now you should realize how important doing these brainless robotic acts of mass murder at a whim (aka quests) (at a whim because there IS NO [censored] STORY). My laughing, but annoyed response to this diagogue, which i had while listening to it were, respectively: 1.) WHAT PUZZLE?? and 2.) HELL NO I DON'T UNDERSTAND! THATS HOW BAD THE "STORY" IS! None of the diaglogue is realistic or believable, its all " Hi partner, say, i've got a problem with those pesky bandits, mind going to their hideout and wiping them all out." Thats not an overstatement. All of the the gameplay mechanics are sub-AAA, with a plash of dim-witted design decision sprinkled here and there.

And as you can see, there are people who don't like it :P There are some people who plain hate it, and really don't see much good about it at all. And so again, hopefully you are one of the people who do like it.

However, it would've helped your cause a little better if they had of stated what they did like as well... And dude, you should called "SPOILER" giving that much of the story :P

RAGE is not about the story, so if story is what you're looking for then Rage is not for you. However, to say Rage is not worth $20 is just... seriously, c'mon.

Really? You compare people liking RAGE to people who enjoy stamp collecting yet then want to throw in two major pace killers for a shooter like "puzzles" and a more verbose "story"?

Have you never played an id game before? As far as story goes this is verging on epic for them, puzzles are there but they have a tendancy to be more environmental and optional to retain speed. It doesn't sound like you did your homework very well before buying yourself a copy.

Huh? Im not refering to an actual puzzle. As far as what is verbose and a pace killer, that is a matter of opinion. Some people want to play Tetris, some people want to step into the Holodeck. I'll take the Holodeck, you have fun with Tetris. I've played just about all the id game i think. Played through D3 many times and would have loved some more story in that too.
