The "survival" aspect of eating and drinking was more of an annoying little burden than actual "Oh [censored] I gotta find something to eat or I will die" survival. If food is just as abundant, then hardcoe will still be a burden survival wise.

Well I hate to break it to you but.... If you find it so much of a burden when there's lots of food, it's still going to be a burden for you if there's less food. I mean, unless I'm missing something. HC mode is exactly the survival aspect of eating and drinking, among other things.

Something to consider.... NV was not directly hit. There is an abundance of life happening, lots of people... they are considerably more well off than in F3. So to make food more scarce than the DC wasteland just wouldn't make sense.

Well, if you want to [censored] about how much food you have. You could always, oh I dont know....sell it? Or just not pick it up. Seriously, stop relying on a game to make it difficult, put your own limitations on yourself. Make mental barriers. I do it all the time.

I think the people asking for less food don't fully understand how the west coast works.

I voted "Less abundant? There should be more!"

I do agree there should be less pre-war food seeing as it's been 200 plus years now.

The Original Fallouts Show large farms growing food. Mutated Corn and cabbage as well as Apple Orchards. They were farming Brahmin and even giant Mole rats. NCR has a population of 700,000 and that was the time of FO2. I don't think they will all live on pre-war food.

Yes New Vegas is out in the Majave desert but there still should be people farming animals and plants. I want to see alot of food. What I don't want is for food to heal you at least not as much as it does in FO3. I want to see food caravans, people selling food in shops.

By this token no firearm/energy-based weaponry/missile launcher type weapon should exist in game (or at least be usable). In fact, Hoover Dam should be not producing electricity anymore due to no more equipment being produced (after 200 years, you should be out of spares), all buildings should have collapsed, etc.

Point being, if you are going to complain about the abundance of pre-war food, you have to do the same for the use of pre-war weaponry 200 years after the bombs fell, along with other things.

Fallout one and two had people who actually MADE weapons. The Gun Runners from 1 (who are returning, so I hear) had a working factory. Vault City had machinery to make Stims and other medical equipement. The bigger cities in 2 were mostly buildings that were built brand new, and the ones that weren't had noticeable damage to them, although many of New Reno's buildings were still in good shape because people can WORK on them.

My whole point is the West Coast Fallout world had new infrastructure, production, and economy. People weren't just sitting on their asses scavving anymore. Read about NCR - they were using a railroad to get the stuff that they were mining around.

It's been 200 years since the war, and in that time, people were still alive. Once they started working together and were able to more easily survive, they started producing and rebuilding.

Vegetables like peppers, carrots, onions, and potatos are super easy to grow in nearly every climate, also, so it would be welcome to see people enjoying a nice salad or stir-fry.

Not sure if you're being a smart ass, but I think he's refering to things like Fancy Lads Snack Cakes, Sugar Bombs, basically any pre-war processed and packaged foods.

I'm agreeing with Styles... Pre-war food should have been eaten long ago.... Then I added an additional factoid, in that the veggies I listed a very easy to grow and require very little in terms of specific climate control to germinate and be edible crops. Make sense? Or do you have something against salad and stir-fry? :unsure2:

Agreed.

Interesting point about the food not healing as much. Although IIRC a lot of waste food in F3 only healed about 6 hp? Which still isn't a whole lot. So maybe to balance out the survival aspect of it, to obtain the same healing effects as F3, maybe it has to be cooked?

salad and stir-fry? :unsure2:

I would love to walk down the strip or any other street and see cooks using those pots and pans In FO3. To see people making Stir-fry. To see mole rates, and other creatures hanging skinned in their shops. To walk into Casinos kitchens and see people cooking and freezers full of Brahmin meat :D.

Agreed.

If it was connected to survival skill and you only see health from the food you eat if you have a good to high skill level then it would not be so bad. The food would have to be cooked.

I think it was said that if you eat raw meat you can get sick. (at least for hardcoe Mode http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1101716-raw-meat/page__view__findpost__p__16375172)
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think we will see this for FO New Vegas but fingers crossed for FO4.

But it is actually "fun" to have the burden of less food. That is something to worry about. Not "Oh man I gotta eat two Salisbury steaks every 3 hours"

They really should have named it something other than "hardcoe" mode - that term has too many macho expectations attached to it, and all the l33t types seem to expect anything "hardcoe" to reach out of the screen and punch them in the face whenever they take damage, or something.

Realism mode doesn't work, because it's not. Survival Mode, perhaps? That's still not quite right, since it only takes into account the food & water thing, not the part where stuff weighs more.

I see what your getting at but it doesn't bother me, I'd say keep it the same but maybe replace some of it with wasteland foods (which i think they are doing any ways)

I saw a history show were they said the dam could run years after every one disappears (100 years I think...can't remember) but it could survive even longer structurally cause the concrete would still be drying (1000 years or more once again I can't remember).

I agree wholeheartedly. Fresh food should exist. You'd think fresh cooked brahmin steaks would have a lot more value than 200 year old Salisbury steak, and that most people, unless traveling, would be utilizing domesticated brahmin and other animals much more.

I agree. Fallout 3 also made no sense that everyone was STILL mostly eating only pre-war food. I mean, its been forever, it took place, timeline wise, after fallout 2, yet there was no advancement of infrastructure. It was like the bombs dropped 5 years ago.

I don't remember the time line of when the settlements of DC were started but I always thought of Capitol Wasteland having been decimated by all the Nukes that any survives would have fled and that the settlements in the game were recently started.

True.. I saw that show also.. Life after people. Hoover dam would just keep going without any people running it and they predicted it could go 50 to 100 years. Obviously that depended on how well the parts of the machinery held out. Pretty interesting stuff. Also made you realize how fast in actuality the land and plant life would recover and take back the world. According to the show most cities would be unrecognizable in 50 years.. and would have completely vanished in 100 years. Societies on the other hand have shown amazing resilience and are fast building... Unlike in the Fallout world. For some reason Fallout world just doesn't know how to rebuild and technology and food remains intact after 200 years... That's the way fallout world is... Different laws for different dimensions. Fallout isn't supposed to be this worlds reality.. it's another worlds reality. Your playing by it's rules.. (the ones the game designers make up.) If Fallout took place according to our reality it just wouldn't be Fallout.

So I vote for same amount of Food... Who knows how much food we'll actually have to eat? That's never been discussed has it?.. We might have to eat 3 to 4 things every meal to keep our energy up. I'm pretty sure it's not just going to be one can of Cram a day and a bottle of water.

one of the problems with the whole pa setting is that one of the expected (and known) behaviours of people in/after a post disaster situation is hording and stockpileing. combine that with the reality that theres not realy any "outside" stockpiles (grocery stores, "wholesale clubs" and so on) just flat out dont exist, and, realisticaly you should be expecting to see the AVERAGE "household" or comunity haveing 1-6 months supply of food on hand, or the ability to get it easily (fishing, hunting, farming)

It probably wasn't abundant. It just seemed abundant since it was so useless. Cram, Salisbury Steak and Yum Yum Deviled Eggs were as useless as a fork in Fallout 3.

I probably won't play in hardcoe mode anyway (I hate needing to eat food in games, I get that in real life and it's really not that much fun, I don't want to have to deal with it in my video games as well.) so needing to eat food won't be a problem with me, still, if one does not use hardcoe mode, there would really be no need for all that food unless Obsidian makes food a more useful method of healing. So the amount of food doesn't effect me so much, still, I'm not sure it would make much sense to see less food than Fallout 3, since New Vegas is much better developed than Fallout 3's wasteland was. Actually, I'd say Fallout 3 is the game that should have had less food, seeing as it created a world that felt much more desperate, like the people were just barely holding on, which this may not have made so much sense as 200 years would likely have allowed the Capital Wasteland time to recover much more, but regardless, that's the feel Bethesda went for, and it seems to me like it would have captured that feeling better if there was less food.

What I would like to see though is much less prewar food, I mean, who would eat food that has been lying around for 200 years? I don't care how many preservatives are in it, I can't see anything good coming from eating 200 year old food, especially when its also irradiated, plus, I'd imagine that most food that was laying around in stores and houses and such would have been scavanged and eaten by people by now. After all, it's not like everyone just dissappeared and crawled out of holes after 200 years, sure, a few people were living in vaults for that amount of time, but from what I understand, even most of the control vaults opened much earlier, not to mention the people who never got into vaults. Thus, it doesn't seem to make much sense to see so much prewar food, and I would like most of the food to consist of things that can be produced in Fallout's post apocalyptic setting, especially since in earlier games, the West Coast appeared to have recovered much better than the Capital Wasteland, thus people are more likely to be able to produce their own food through farming and such.

Are you missing the point of hardcoe mode? It is supposed to be difficult. It is supposed to be hard to survive.

The point of hardcoe is to add/change gameplay elements.

I think there should be a lot less pre-war food around. After all, even if they can somehow last for 200 years, why haven't other people or animals discovered and ate them by now?

But perhaps the best way for it to work will be for food to be abundant in population centers, active military bases, trader outpost. Those people living there have to eat as well, so it will make sense for there to be lots of food there. On the other hand, there will be little to no food out in the wild. The only way to get food out in the middle of nowhere will be by either hunting, finding eatable plants, running across a trader caravan (the price of food and water will be a lot higher then in the towns), or cannibalism.

So the best way to be safe will be to bring lots of food and water with you. But you will have to sacrifice the amount of weapons and ammo you carrry instead.

Just my GECKulation, but frankly this will depend on how much food the Obsidian team Wanted to be laying around. We have to remember that in Fallout3, food was not an item of consequence and didn't have any major impact on your character - thus it was a common clutter item that could be left around without much impact on the game other than immersion. However in FNV we have hardcoe Mode and food will actually matter, and it seems to me that they would pay a little more attention to how much of it, what kinds and where its placed than they did in Fallout 3 - specifically because it now has an impact on the player. I GECKulate we will have less food, perhaps even more care into the kinds of food placed in certain areas.
