I'm really hoping food isn't so damn abundant in New Vegas.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:03 am

The amount of food just laying around in Fallout 3 was astonishing. You'd think that after hundreds of years of no food being produced, it wouldn't be laying openly everywhere and at incredibly cheap prices in stores. This is also why hardcoe mode in Fallout 3 was so incredibly easy survival-wise. What is there to worry when there is a nuke cola or box of food around every corner? I'd like the amount of food to be reduced to such a level in NV that I might even have to resort to cannibalism in dire times.

Edit: By the way, I am mostly referring to pre-war food. Large farms in settlements make sense. I do think though that food should be a bit pricer. Even developed countries have thousands starving.

Also, I'm just throwing this out there as a side note. It would be cool if you could only get certain meats from animals you have killed if you have a high enough survivalists skill.

Doesn't bother me one bit.

Besides, you have any idea how many preservatives they used in the 50's?

Fallout Wanderer's Edition mod. It added a food, drink, and sleep bar, as well as ammo weight and other things. I'm pretty sure its popularity caused Obsidian to add hardcoe mode to NV.

1) nevermind you answered it

2) why should it be less abundant, players are obviously going to need it if they plan to play on hardcoe mode

1) are you talking about the mod for playing hardcoe in FO3?

2) why should it be less abundant, players are obviously going to need it if they plan to play on hardcoe mode

1. Yes.

2. Are you missing the point of hardcoe mode? It is supposed to be difficult. It is supposed to be hard to survive.

There probably shouldn't be a lack of food since there's plenty of domesticated Brahmin and Bighorners around. All kinds of num-nums out there.

I agree. Fallout 3 also made no sense that everyone was STILL mostly eating only pre-war food. I mean, its been forever, it took place, timeline wise, after fallout 2, yet there was no advancement of infrastructure. It was like the bombs dropped 5 years ago.
I imagine pre-war food will be very scarce, but probably at this point in the post-apocalyptic world, food isn't a huge problem. NCR is very well-developed and have many cities and a large population. Check out the fallout wiki about them - they are huge. I imagine there are huge brahmin farms and crops (like you could find in Fallout 2, Modoc is one example)

The food items didnt give you a massive HP boost anyway.
If you wanted hard you would have stimpaks limited.

You have to put into consideration all of the years people could've went out scavenging for food. I don't see how hundreds of years can go back with that much food left.

As its been stated several times food should be the same, or even more abundant within New Vegas

If it's too abundant, some of the hardcoeness of hardcoe just turns into "pop-a-pill" -busywork. What's the point of the feature then?

Seriously. Every few hours I'd see the OH DAMN YOU'RE HUNGRY/THIRSTY indicator pop up, go "ugh" and eat two of my 500,000 pre-war food boxes.

I never found it abundant due to the fact I rarely, heck most games never used stimpacks.
I Hunted foraged and scaved what I needed, so nope no different, but only salsbury steaks have so far ( to my knowledge ) been announced to return.
The rest has been food sourced from horners and critters, so again nope imo it should stay the same.
And hardcoe as discussed here before is a misnomer, its more a "add some slightly more realism to the game" mode.

You can't really criticize Bethesda/Obsidian for how easy a 3rd-party mod was.

What? Where did you get that impression?

The abundance of food complaint isn't because some guy made a mod, it is about realism. And with NV adding hardcoe, it should just be another factor.

By this token no firearm/energy-based weaponry/missile launcher type weapon should exist in game (or at least be usable). In fact, Hoover Dam should be not producing electricity anymore due to no more equipment being produced (after 200 years, you should be out of spares), all buildings should have collapsed, etc.

Point being, if you are going to complain about the abundance of pre-war food, you have to do the same for the use of pre-war weaponry 200 years after the bombs fell, along with other things.

I think that food should be just as abundant in New Vegas as it was in Fallout 3. If not more. Considering the addition of HC mode, and the fact food will be required, why would you want less than F3?

Don't just assume everyone has PC or has a certain mod. <_<

But yes should be a little less food.

It just seems like ever since they decided to do something for the community, it's still not good enough? Technically there were so many stim packs everywhere in F3, food wasn't even required. I really don't understand why people would ask for less now that they've given it real purpose.

I'm going to bank on there being about the same amount of food as F3. HC is not supposed to actually make it hard per se... it's more like survival. You cannot just eat one of your "500,000" whatever... (I mean... really?) you need to carry supplies with you, with your limited weight. You loot a couple bodies and you can't carry much food and water anymore.

I wish they named it 'Survival Mode' instead.

hardcoe mode isn't "Hard mode." Its just survival aspects incorporated into the game. Thats why there is a seperate difficulty system for "hardcoe Mode." I mean, it not like you can carry that much food with you, what with weighted ammo and everything.

Obviously the 500,000 is an exaggeration.

I've played Fallout 3 on hardcoe mode with all the settings as brutal as possible. The "survival" aspect of eating and drinking was more of an annoying little burden than actual "Oh [censored] I gotta find something to eat or I will die" survival. If food is just as abundant, then hardcoe will still be a burden survival wise.

I agree. In Fallout 3, I'd always end up WITH TOO MUCH FOOD! I would have to sell around 50 boxes that I had cause they were taking up so much inventory space. So if they are steering towards same food amount as Fallout 3, then they need to change their minds.
