Really quite angry

What you should be focusing on more than having someone over is getting your own place. Several circumstances will arise from this that are beneficial to you:

1) You won't need anyone's permission.

2) Your parents will be forced to either accept you for who/what you are, or bugger off. Exorcisms = gtfo my house.

It really doesn't seem for your own mental (possibly physical) health that staying there is much of a viable choice, otherwise I would have suggested merely reconciling with them, but there is no reconciling with that.

Just get out of there as soon as possible dude.

All the "their rules" and "mutual respect" stuff is an insidious and time-worn excuse for making others suffer needlessly, while absorbing guilt. Things are often more black and white than most people are willing to acknowledge. I'd never compromise on these things beyond what was necessary to keep myself safe.

Whatever you do, I hope it works out best for you. :)

That was a joke right?

At any rate you seem to be a pretty bad situation with your family  As for the situation about where to stay you really should crash at a friend's or stay in a hotel. I hope everything works out best though :)

You're concerned about affording a hotel, OP? Mow lawns. It is summer, after all.

You can make bank off of mowing, trust me.

Want me to paint a picture?

Sitting behind my locked door, blocking it as tears stream down my face. Knife in my hand, ready to defend myself from my own father should the need arise. The sound of him attempting to force my door open, yelling in a loud voice, screaming to god to exorcise demons within me.

Respect for my parents, particularly my dad, died then and there. I still have that burned into my memory, and probably always will.

No offense meant, but...the quoted above sounds sooo far fetched. Truly...I can't take the contents of this thread seriously anymore, and any and all respect I had for your situation before the quoted post above has dropped. I'm not saying I don't respect you as a person or your beliefs, but really? Your story is like some fabricated - not completely false - story I'd hear on Jerry Springer or Dr. Phil.

Ah....to be honest you're not alone there Bear. I mean, I can fully believe that MWFan's parents dont approve of his homosixuality, but I find the "exorcism" thing a tad unbelieveable myself. Hell, I'm a conservative Christian who doesnt support homosixual relationships/marriage (so sue me) and I cannot even begin to understand how someone would think "exorcism" would be a solution unless MWFan's parents belong to some radical cult.

I do sympathise with you though OP. Living in the same house as people who believe differently to you is never easy. I'd follow the advice given by many others in this thread; move out. While you're under your parents roof you need to respect their beliefs and wishes, but if you work hard to move out then you can live your life the way you want.

You'd be surprised the kinds of people you can find in the Bible Belt of America...I don't think it's too far fetched. People do some crazy things out of a fear of something they've harbored prejudices for their entire life. And to be honest, if it was real, this post is really quite mean...you can't believe in everything you see on the Internet, but some things, true or not, I think are best left undoubted.

If that story IS true I would've called the police, to be honest. Parents or not.

You would...but plenty of kids in the world don't when they're abused by their parents. I think quite a few people have had horrific experiences with their parents and not called the cops...myself included in fact. I know as a sane, rational advlt you could say that, but even as a 14 year old teenager, I knew I couldn't call the cops, they were my parents. It needs perspective to be understood.

It is out there but I live in Ohio. I believe it. People are strange out here, and I live in north-east Ohio. Things get worse as you go west. Between mothers drowning her infants to protect them from satan and my own mother almost being shot for simply owning a business and not taking [censored] from a chauvinist, I'll believe an impromptu exorcism.

To the OP, hang in there brother. Times are changing, people are realizing being gay isn;t the work of satan. They can't get much worse, eh?

Personally I would do what I wanted to do, it's your life afterall and not theirs so I would just do it to spite them. Ok not good advice really but there you go.

You already said your parents met at a younger age than you and were married by your age, so your parents are being very hypocritical, are they even aware of that and if not would it make a difference?

A hotel room is out of the question if you have limited funds, but a friends house would be a viable solution maybe?

I should point out: I do feel for you though OP, that your parents look down on you simply because of your homosixuality.

No, honestly. Not at all. I thought they were, and I was under the impression that they were finally coming to terms with it, but alas it seems they're still uncomfortable with it.

Considering my dad tried to perform an exorcism on me shortly after I came out to them.

Dear god, i can understand being a little upset, but doing something such as that is pretty extreme. my advice, just get a job and get enough money to own your own place, be it an apartment or whatever.

Yep. People are stupid through the mid-west. And..uhh...I'm not gay. I belong to a different subculture that's looked down on as well, so I try to support people who go through such travesties.

I realize how it sounds, but it did happen, I can assure you. Besides, why would I make something like that up for people on an internet forum?

You don't have to believe me though, as I can't provide any real proof aside from my own testimony.

Anyway, there's been MUCH worse done out there. And as for the "call the police" thing, it didn't come to mind. Running away, however, did.

I'm actually somewhat tempted to write a book about all of this.

Heck...if that story IS true you SHOULD write a book. It rivals the works of Stephen King.

1. Write a book.
2. Publish and release book.
3. Write, publish and release 6 more books.
4. Make books into an 8 - not 7, because the 7th is too long - part movie series.
5. ???
6. Profit!
