Remember the good ol' days?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 5:51 pm

I found my may on youtube to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_OfzRig5yU&feature=related and decided to watch it again.
While I was watching it, I got this feeling of.....nostalgia I guess. Back in early 2011 speculating like wild about what would this new elder scrolls game would be like, I kinda' miss those days. It was exciting! But anyways on to my question:

Did Skyrim turn out like you imagined after seeing this trailer for the first time?

I preferred the unofficial trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9eGtyqz4gY

It fell short of my expectations, but in all honesty, I had really high ones. It's still a good game.

I don't want it to seem like I'm trolling Skyrim, so I'll put it in perspective. Since I sold Skyrim to a friend, I have tried playing Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, Mass Effect II, and Red Dead Redemption..... they're nearly unplayable after a decade of Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Skyrim. I just can't get over the bland level design and linear-ness when compared to Bethesda's (+Obsidian) games.

It turned out to be much better than what I expected, and that's always a good thing.

I don't get the same experience I did when playing Morrowind and Oblivion for the first time. I grew up with those games, I can't say the same for Skyrim. But kids now will get to look back on this game and feel the same nostalgia I do for Morrowind and Oblivion.

Anyone else remember the anticipation just hours before you got to play for the first time? :) To answer your question, yes.

I would say no, because I expected the game to be more like Oblivion. Oblivions world was full of immersion, when I play Skyrim I feel like I am playing a regular video game. I just cant get into it the way I got into Oblivion.

I went into speculation blackout mode almost immediately after the VGA's and only watched the E3 demo once. You can get sick of a game before you've even got it in your hands. It's made Skyrim a much more enjoyable game I like to think.

Turned out better than I expected.
After Oblivion my expectations weren't high.
I'm very pleased with Skyrim, it could've been better but its the best game for me since MW.

Yes and no. Graphics are awesome. Storyline...not so much. We got Oblivion when it came out and I played it frequently with short breaks to play Fallout 3 (which I did not care for too much) and New Vegas (which I like better) and Red Dead Redemption (which could have been a great game, but somehow isn't).

I've been playing Skyrim almost daily since 11-11-11 and I currently am running 5 different characters to keep it interesting. I've completed the main quest with my original character and and started the MQ with one other, but I know I won't finish it. I really dont't have the desire to go through it again with any of my others. I mean what's the point if nothing really changes after you complete it? You still have leveled dragons swooping down on you like before. In Oblivion after you finished the MQ you didn't have Oblivion portal thingies continuing to pop up all over.

The only questline I've done repeatedly is The Dark Brotherhood because it's the most interesting. Mostly I explore various dungeons and pillage and loot.

I don't want it to sound like I don't enjoy the game, because I do. Like I said I play almost daily, but rarely for longer than an hour at a time, which in a game like this isn't very long. Skyrim just feels kind of unresolved or unfinished.

most games I've picked up since the advent of DLC have felt this way. how about the good old days when games were released as whole and complete finished products and there weren't obvious DLC placeholders littered throughout?

I never saw any kind of trailer or promo material before I bought Skyrim. I randomly found the game a month or two after the release.

Overall, the game met my expectations. Which means, it is a world I can spend hundreds of hours in exploring and enjoy looking for that special item or NPC or location and discovering the stories behind each of those things.

Could the game be better? Sure, any game can be improved, but the downsides are minor compared to the upsides.

Yes, and hopefully, a few years from now, they won't be moaning about how none of the new games are as deep and well written as Skyrim's story and quests were.... (LOL! I couldn't write that with a straight face...)

You want to love it. It is beautiful. You want to love it for a long time. It has so much potential. You get sad and frustrated eventually, when you realize how much of that potential was not achieved. Yet it is very pretty, and alluring, with many bowers and nooks to get lost in. So you play. But not with all your heart, or all your desire. You play on, wishing for what might have been.

I didn't keep up with any of the pre-release hyping for Skyrim. I didn't think I would care for it at all. I was pleasantly surprised.

I too avoided all pre-release media, so all my expectations were based on their previous games. As a result it truned out to be better than i feared, but alas worse than i hoped.
