Now that's one hardcoe planet.

Indeed. It definitely shines out among it's peers.

What if they are not made of dna. In fact, an alien lifeform could be made of something we have never discoved.

Well, technically life isn't made of DNA, but I get your meaning. Sure, there could be completely different forms of life that aren't anything like the carbon-based flora and fauna we're used to.

Scientists base all of their discoveries on what they know, but what about the stuff they don't know?

Actually, they don't. Making baseless assumptions is kinda the opposite of science. ;)

They are looking at our planet and saying, "Wow! They have dirt!"

It may be possible, but I think it would be a good bet that other life would be similar to us chemically. After all, we are made of the most common elements in the universe.

Now we only have to find a diamond asteroid to cut it in pieces.

I don't think that's necessarily true. The same set of elements can result in very different compounds and behaviors under different conditions. The structures that make life as we know it possible are much more than the sum of their parts. Nothing says that our recipe for life is the only one using that (or a similar) set of ingredients.

Then they wouldn't be able to reproduce or build new cell structures. While other elements could be used to comprise DNA, you would still need some sort of encoding structure and a solvent for biological processes to occur in. Elements with similar chemical behaviours are necessary. They might be alien, but they still have to obey the laws of physics.

This planet could also be used to cut up the old white dwarf Lucy instead, I think Lucy is bigger after all.

Planet Midnight?

That's the very first thing I thought of when I saw this. Great Doctor Who episode, and apparently it's true, also. :P

I think the point was that "life as we know it" has DNA, but forms of life may exist that do not have such a mechanism.

Interesting. Now i expect them to find a planet made only out of liquid. Propably impossible, but who knows?

If we managed to reach this planet and such, wouldn't it drastically lower the value of diamonds or ...?

assuming it is indeed made of something crystalline, or diamonds, that'd indeed be an interesting discovery. not that that it is not interesting as is. planet looks different. what's the blue line and the orange sphere there? these are what especially make it interesting as is, even if it is not made of diamonds.

...not sure if serious...

We need to find a planet made of Iron now, otherwise we won't be able to mine it.

We live on a planet made of iron!

considering how common carbon is and how most objects in space are under an intense amount of gravitational compression, this should not be surprising but expected as inevitable.
