Scientists discover planet made of diamond

The new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so a large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond.

Pretty amazing find, but I guess in an infinite universe you are bound to find some odd stuff every once in a while. :P

And this is why I have trouble believing Earth is the only planet that can support intelligent life.

With that much diamond we could mine 20 planets of Obsidian :P

Ooh, finding a carbon planet is exciting. I hope we can find one a bit closer to home eventually.

And this is why I have trouble believing Earth is the only planet that can support intelligent life.

Are you saying diamonds are just teeny tiny Monoliths? :P

damn, I wish I hadn't got rid of my science books now, we learned* about this. Something about stars exploding so they become carbon or something...*Shrug*

(*By learned I mean we tried not to forget it until our exams were over. It's only been a few months.)

Life yes.

Intelligence: Jury is still out on.

Ooh, a planet made out of diamond. NASA Places' new mission. "Mining expedition to planet made out of money by 2020".

I mean a planet that can support it, not sure whether any will have it.

Arthur C. Clarke wrote in "2010" that Jupiter might have a diamond core from carbon percolating downwards for eons. That's amazing that one has been found. Probably was a gas giant like Jupiter and the radio jets from the pulsar or somethng like it blew away the atmosphere leaving the diamond core behind.

What bothers me is when people say life needs water. What if different creatures on other plantes need a different type of liquid element. Like Liquid Diamond if thats possible, I'm not great with chemistry :P

Well this pretty amazing, but Earth is more freak than that. Still to say theres no more Earths out of millions of trillions of planets is ignorant.

We need to find a planet made of Iron now, otherwise we won't be able to mine it.

That would be carbon, which is already necessary for DNA. What you need is a solvent in which biological reactions can occur, and that means an inert liquid like H2O.

What if they are not made of dna. In fact, an alien lifeform could be made of something we have never discoved. Scientists base all of their discoveries on what they know, but what about the stuff they don't know?

It was a poke at this planet. Not the one that was presumably just discovered. Yes, there is life on this planet. But as to whether or not it is considered to be intelligent is debatable.
