Well, it is 4,000 light years away, so I don't there'll be any day trips there any time soon.

Wasn't LV426 a mining colony? Oh no, wait: the Nostromo was a mining ship, and its journey to deposit the ore was interrupted by a distress signal, so before it could bring back those precious minerals and drastically lower the price of diamonds, the aliens nommed everybody's brains.

This isn't even a planet. It's a "dead" white dwarf star.

It also isn't "made of diamond", it just has a lot of carbon (and oxygen), as all white dwarves do, under high pressure. Which means it has a lot of diamonds there too of course, but also other allotropes of carbon (chiefly in the C8 structure) and a liquid (and metallic) carbon-oxygen core.

assuming it is indeed made of something crystalline, or diamonds, that'd indeed be an interesting discovery. not that that it is not interesting as is. planet looks different. what's the blue line and the orange sphere there? these are what especially make it interesting as is, even if it is not made of diamonds.

Artist's representation? They always make them look fantastical.

You're right.. missed this "the planet is probably the remnant of a once-massive star that has lost its outer layers to the so-called pulsar star it orbits." It's also so close to the pulsar that its orbital period is just over an hour. So definitely wasn't a gas giant planet.

What about making your own mind? The original article about PSR J1719?1438 and its companion is published in the Science Journal (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/early/2011/08/19/science.1208890), The abstract says it already: "Its companion's mass is near that of Jupiter, but its minimum density of 23 g cm?3 suggests that it may be an ultra-low-mass carbon white dwarf." Basically, and despite the sensationalistic and attention-grabbing title, it is only (partially) "made of diamond" if it is a dead star.

And this is why I have trouble believing Earth is the only planet that can support intelligent life.

Until you prove that the universe is infinite or you can put a definite value on the probability of intelligent life forming on any given planet and label a region in the universe where this probability should mathematically occur at least once I'm going to have to contend your surety.

Regarding the nature of the Universe, your statement about proof could be countered with: Until you prove that the Universe is finite etc etc.

By what we can observe and understand, our Universe may as well be infinite and in an infinite Universe, all things must exist.
