Should Skyrim have a trainer to reset your perks?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 4:54 pm

Good question I think and would you take advantage of it.

It would cut down on the need to constantly create new characters but might hurt the longevity of the game.

Your thoughts?

No.

As you said it cuts down the need for new characters, if I can just reset my skills it wrecks the replay value.

Say my archer wants to smith some dragonbone armor, I just reset my perks, craft the armor and then switch back totally ignoring the investment in that skill. Or I respec and put points in enchanting and alchemy, buff my gear and then respec back to my old build and I've got free enchantments. Totally gamebreaking, if they added such a feature I'd only support it if you could only do it ONCE per character. If someone makes a mistake while picking perks, they can just reload a previous save if it's that big of a deal to them.

Seeing how it would be optional, I have no reason to object to the idea in general. However, I would not ever utilize the function.

No, that would actually ruin a part of the game IMO...

I played Kingdom of Amalur and they had that ability to respec and frankly I got bored after about 30 hours.

I have to admit that it does svck having to start a new character because if your a perfectionist like me and mispend 1 point you do it again.

I have over 500 hours and still haven't completed the main quest yet.

I would definately use it, because I made a major transition from Light to Heavy armor and Two to One handed in the middle of my playthrough, so I wasted perks.

I'm for the idea, but I can understand how some might consider it game breaking. One compromise I think would be fine is a one-time-only respec, like from a special treasure found in a cave somewhere, like a Mirror, or something, that allows you to reset your perks, but at the cost of the item.

One use, one respec. No more.

If you don't want the perk, then just don't take it!?!

I hate it when games makes choices reset-able :stare:

I don't like the re roll idea. I wouldn't mind it being in the game if it was something like 100k gold or more. But role playing a new character to do different factions and using different perks is fun and helps the replayability IMO

Yes! But the skill system would have to be reworked a bit. It's just the tradeskill perks that would be abused.

Like the smithing bonuses would only apply if the appropriate perks were active... But... That sounds like a lot of work, to redesign this.

Probably just make new characters and spend them differently. I abandoned my first pure Mage because I had all the dual casting perks, only to realize I don't like any of them.

I would most definitely pay 1k to remove a perk or something of that sort. I hope they implement this.

I like the idea if being able to respec because I have made so many characters in this game I can never get anything done. But then I agree with people about forging dragon or daedric armor and then respecting after all the gear. Maybe not the crafting skills? Just weapons armor skills stuff like that

Yes, but only if it has some kind of balancing compensation.... some suggestions:

-You can only use it once or twice for a big amount of gold..

or... and this one is actually my favorite... you can reset your skill tree but with less skill points:
Say you're lvl 60, so you have 60 perks and you choise to reset the skill tree... you would only have 90% left.. so 54 perks... and every time you reset it, you get a even lesser amount of perks...

I think this would work the best for those who want a balanced unexploitable game and those who feel they want their character to change careers.. (numbers I used for example may be a bit drastic but it's just to point out the way I think it would work.)

It would just lead to more complaint because people how exploited it thought that the game became too easy, I think they ruined Diablo 3 because all skills could be reassigned at any point.

Especially because Xbox doesn't have colsole commands or cheats, havign a legit way to reset perks would be incredibly nice. Even if it cost like 100,000 dollars to do it.

They should make it a "fake" level up feature beyond 81. Basically, every time you "level up" beyond 81, you gain 0 stats, but have the option of removing a perk and selecting a new one.

Back on July the 12th, 2011, I made these replies to a similar thread. I stand by the the points, if not the condescending tone.

"Looks like I have to say this yet again. Try speed forgetting something. Can't be done.
I would like to learn to make the perfect mille feuille. Maybe I will learn it if I forget how to play rasgueados. Oh, wait, that doesn't make a word of sense. Looks like I will have to stick with what I already know, and learn the hard way. "

"And this addresses the 'magic artefact that changes your perks' idea. Why not change your skills, and while we are at it, your race. After all, it's magic. "

"Choices and consequences. I'm going to say that again. Choices and consequences. If a role playing gam doesn't have these, then may I suggest you have been short changed.
DA:O was on the right track with the Dalish/werewolf, mages/templars, and Dwarven succession plot points, then allowed you to re spec your skills and attributes in Awakening, making a mockery of all your character development decisions in the main game. You made a lot of choices regarding your character, then suddenly they didn't matter. Do you what they call it when something like that is introduced to a game? That's right, dumbing down. "

Well there it is a single player game and frankly there are a lot of exploits already. I'm only about 3 hours into my new character and i'm already like level 41 with a number of skills maxed to 100.

I wouldn't use these exploits if I had a respec option available.

Hi teher kenrichaed! How are you doing? Good, I hope.

On the contrary, I think TES should move in the direction of you having to find a certain trainer - a quest or set of quests - in order to get a perk. Expanding on this, Oblivion Gates and word walls were storytelling devices to get you on the move and, in the case of wordwalls, reward you for doing so. Now, what really makes sense is you get a cool new ability - a perk - if you find a person who's willing to teach you, and such trainer might request a favour or two from you before he teaches you anything. That way travelling around gets more meaninful and gets rewarded.

I have 10+ hours/day for the J.O.B. and don't like the idea of resetting perks. If I want to do something new, I'll start a new character.

As stated above, it ruins the replayability and sets grounds for HUGE exploits. True, the game has them now, but there are still some of us who stay "true to the cause" and not use the exploits, cheats, or various other levelling work-arounds and just play the game for what it's for. If you want cheats, go buy the book, but don't exploit the game to better your character. Just my opinion.

That's why I suggested a one time use only respec. Once, no more. And since this is a...
*puts a megaphone up to K-9's ear* SINGLE PLAYER GAME
*puts it down*
...In which the actions of other players has zero effect on you as a person, or your game itself beyond your own choices...I don't see the harm in allowing it only once.
