Combat: Dual wield: Tap X. Magic: Hold X. Two handed: Tap X. It's boring. It doesn't look interesting. The only real improvement I see from even Morrowind is a kill cam. Big deal. KoA proves that an "open world" isn't an excuse for boring combat.
I disagree with this.
First: the real change from Morrowind's combat to Skyrim's combat is the shift from character skill to player skill. This shift started with Oblivion which overhauled combat by giving us much more control (blocking was no longer chance-based, if your crosshair was over an enemy and you attacked it, yout hit will always land...). Skyrim combat system is a continuation of this philosophy; now we can, for instance, bash whenever we want. Also, bashing is quite a useful and game-enhancic mechanic because it interrupts incoming powerattacks, which is something we couldn't do in the past. The inclusion of bashing adds a new layer of strategy to combat.
About killcams, I don't believe they are an improvement. Enemies can pull one of those killcams on you even though you were blocking/you could have avoided the hit. Because of this, killcams remind me of morrowind's stat-based combat system. In my opinion, there should be a way to prevent NPCs, creatures to use them.
Second: about KOA...I played KOA a bit and its combat may be more 'fun' but only if you like the classical 3rd-person, combo-feast-based, type of combat. Not my cup of tea although I'd concede that enemy's reactions to getting hit were very good.
Now a bit more of personal opinion before finishing this post:
In my opinion TES suffers from trying to be both a 1st person and a 3rd person game. A good 3rd person combat game like dark souls or KOA requires dodging, counterattacking and flashy animations, which are very difficult to adapt to 1st person perspective. A good 1st person combat game like Dark Messiah or Dead Island requires a much more immersive camera and animations so that you feel 'you're there'. By trying to do both, Skyrim is only mediocre in both perspectives.
The only things that are inexcusable for me are the (inexistent) hit reactions and the fact that most weapons use the same animations (swings, swings, swings!)
