Um, not a lot of video game players at my school. Lots of drug dealers though.

Regardless of plagiarism, it might not be the best idea to
advertise you play roleplaying games to your classmates,
depending on what grade you're in.

It's just Elder Scrolls, dude...I knew plenty of kids who definitely weren't nerds (including some jocks) who played Oblivion when that came out and there are probably way more than that playing Skyrim. They're just good games.

Probably not anything like the 80's and 90's where these types of games were solely reserved for "nerds". I even know preppy kids that play D&D...

Nonsense. It is not plagiarism when the story was told with his/her own words. Skyrim is not more than the inspiration.

Only when you take a written text and change the author's name does it become plagiarism.

You have a pretty interesting idea of plagiarism... Pretty sure if the dude talked about how he retrieved the DRAGON STONE for the COURT WIZARD of WHITERUN it's plagiarism, pretty clear cut. Still funny, though.

Well, I mean, it's not as bad as it used to be, but still, it's probably not a good idea to announce your a huge Skyrim fan to a girl you like.

It's no more plagiarism than my story I just wrote yesterday

So, A Nobbit of The Skire came across one of the seven necklaces forged in the fires of Mount Death, so, on the advice of the mage Bandolf, he decided to head to Floordor to destroy the necklace once and for all in the fires of Mount Death

Completly my idea...

I'd normally find this funny but anything touched by Tolkien is sacred to me. :stare:

Dude, no offense but you CAN get copyrights on ideas, they just have to be written out. ...
And this little detail is called work, dude. You protect your work with a copyright. You cannot protect the idea that is behind your work. Anyone can write an operating system, but you cannot copy an existing one. The difference is that you can copy the idea, that of an operating system, but not someone's work.

Maybe you mean patents, but you cannot just patent any idea but there, too, needs to be some form of effort behind it.

I am not being offensive, dude. I am teaching you the difference. It is not the idea that is worthy of protection, but it is the work that people put into it. It has got nothing to do with ideas. It is all about the work. Everyone has got ideas and not every idea turns into work.

i'm not patent expert, but, i know someone who could be labeled an "inventor" of sorts. and, he always gets patents on project ideas. some have panned out bigtime once the work was later done and some haven't.

he doesn't work on the idea until a workable product comes to fruition and then apply for the patent.

Hey, I feel you man, I'm using my free time to
post in an Elder Scrolls forum and have spent an obscene
amount of time writing D&D adventures. But the truth
is that in high school, it's just asking for negative attention.
If you don't mind, all the more power to you, but sometimes
its better to save your individualism and RPGing at home so
you can have someone to talk to at lunch or take to the dance.
I'm not saying be ashamed, its just not something socially accepted to be interested in.
I'm not trying to put you down, I just know from experience it can be disheartening (to say the least).
Being in high school, I can say that you're absolutely right. I keep games at home and school at school. Talking about games at school never ends well for my classmates

This is definitely *not* something to be praised for if you used the same names that are used in Skyrim itself. You have duplicated the ideas and hard-work of someone else and then branded it as your own "work". That is the very definition of plagiarism.

If, however, you described your CHARACTER in the context of TES universe, his emotions and feelings, your words -- it's not plagiarism, just extremely unimaginative.

I would recommend that if you are planning to pursue higher education, get out of this habit very soon; as previously mentioned, it is most likely grounds for expulsion and to be quite honest, a disservice to yourself for not using any effort whatsoever or your imagination.

In the manner the OP was presented, I'm going to assume his teacher is clueless about Skyrim/TES and thinks he's brilliant.

No, it is not. There are many things that can and will happen along the way and the words "dragon stone" and "court wizard" do not make it a plagiarism. Nor will the use of words like "Pepsi" or "Coke" make a story a plagiarism. And if a painter uses only certain colours and motives and I choose to use these too does it not make my work a plagiarism either.

How a player manages to get the dragon stone is not predetermined and therefore is there no plot that can be copied. The events of the story will unfold differently for every player. Some will play as a Khajiit and others as a Dark Elf. Some as a warrior and others as a mage. Some will encounter a deer, others a wolf, for some will it be night and for others will it be day, and so on.

I would be more worried if the OP had used all of Skyrim's quest lines. Or the quest line of a game like The Witcher II, which only pushes you from stage to stage and where you cannot go back. Then there would be too little variations and the risk of committing plagiarism becomes high. Yet, it would not be impossible to write a unique story within the world of The Witcher and one that has got little to do with the game's plot itself but only took place at one stage.

WTF? I wrote a paper before Skyrim came out about an Imperial officer escaping from a stormcloak fort. I got a C+ because my teacher's husband was a gamer and knew that it was based off a videogame so I got marked down for no "creativity" She said that it was extremely well written and had great detail but no imagination. I made it all up and the only thing i got from skyrim was the name of the stormcloak faction.
