Re-Spec Option Needed For Console

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 9:36 am

There have been many topics about this, but honestly, I feel this is really unnecessary.

Agreed - both the subject and the thread. I know the OP is new here, but it's wise to get used to the "Search" tool - there was a thread about this on the front page yesterday. With pretty much the same posts in it, as well.

(something that Bethesda said in many interviews for the release of Skyrim; we want to give the player the choice to play however they want to)

I wish they hadn't said that now, as people seem intent on misconstruing it - e.g. "I want to fly! And Beth said I could play how I wanted! They've lied!"

Clearly, they meant you could choose a particular path for your character. You can, of course, change that path - but you have to learn the new skills just as you did the old.

no respec change, we don't need it. It's low on the totempole of things Skyrim needs.

What does it matter if you took a few bad perks along the way? Are you really that focused on getting the best possible character? Its not like Skyrim requires that sort of thinking. I can see this implemented, but only if the cost was REALLY high. Like, 100-150 k per perks.
It matters because it svcks having wasted perks that could be much more useful spent elsewhere. Simple as that.

It'd also be incredibly easy to include, and PC users can already do it, so I don't think priority is the issue here. This isn't something they'd need to spend significant time or resources on.

I personally couldn't care any less about such a feature. There are other features that I would much rather see implemented before this one, so I would vote 'no' on that basis, if only because I wouldn't want to see it implemented over a feature that better appeals to me. That said, I don't give two hoots to a holler in regards to the feature itself, I'd never use it.

I must start new characters to simulate a re-spec :( I really really want re-specing. However with my playstyle i never reach over 40k gold. make it a visit to a certain person maybe that is hard to get to rather than gold.

I vote no. Make a new character, it's what we all do.

I would vote no as well. I do not see any developer ruining a game by giving those who cannot be bothered replaying it an easy way to cheat if they did not like how things turned out with their character skills. You get tired of the character you created and developed, it is time for a new character and a different way of playing, not instantly giving your high level character an entirely new set of skills and perks because you got bored.

I would also add taht for all those saying: "it's a feature, you wouldn't have to use it..."

...It's sadly the exact kind of feature that would lead to yet more complaints about lack of depth, lack of replayability, "too easy" etc., which will all have an impact on user reviews and sales. Re-speccing is not part of Elder Scrolls game design. Period.

...Choices and consequences, they should matter.

If it was optional, fine. But my point as nicely stated by the fellow I am quoting still stands.

But here's the thing; it's your choice to use it or not. Just like it's your choice to use Enchanting to make your character a death machine. It's your choice to use Alchemy to buff yourself to and past the point of OP. It's your choice to use Dragonrend on every Dragon and it's mother for an easier fight.

Doesn't mean all that should be removed as well because it "destroys replay value". It'll only destroy it if you make use of it.

It's as if you're saying "Oh, it's in the game. I HAVE TO USE IT." Pretty sure we have free will for a reason; might as well use it.
It's just drawing in more idiots who play the game using the fortify restoration glitch, the Oghma book glitch and abuse crafting. I'd rather they just patch all these ridiculous exploits.

Having a re-spec option completely defeats the point of an RPG.

those were unintentional glitches, re-spec is a game element. you basically butcher the RPG in a game thats more action than RPG. its like why bother putting perks in anything if i can re-spec why bother doing anything. im not a mage, warrior, etc. im confused.

There have been many topics about this, but honestly, I feel this is really unnecessary. Alchemy, enchanting, and smithing already can be very overpowered. With the ability to make very powerful gear, then remove all the smithing, alchemy, enchanting perks is just not needed and would be a broken system.

Also, shouldn't this be in General Discussion or something. This forum section is for hardware issues.

You would be purposefully breaking the game if you did that. Those that want a perfectly realistic game could just choose not to use it.

I think it could work as a quest reward in the form of a scroll, potion, etc.

I'm just so glad I'm on PC, this thread is just full of facepalm. I <3ed being able to actually use a perk before committing to it on a character I'd spent hours with, and not having to restart to change things around if they proved ineffective. Spend about 10 minutes on a wiki looking at perks, and you'll see how many are incorrectly described and/or more worthless than they appear on paper. Not to mention the armor cap making many perks obsolete. Not that it's not a nice feature to have regardless.

Yes single player, yes do as you wish. But this idea is just silly. Why lock anything in? Why not let you change everything? Why not be able to kill main characters then be able to change your mind and reverse the kill. It's a single player game, what does it matter to anyone else? It's just silly that's why. There has to be some realism to it.

The only way this would make any sense isn't that you have to pay for it.( That's also ridiculous, who are you paying??) The only way it'd make sense is if you go to some dark alley and pay a guy some gold to stick a hook up your nose. Then the cost is you don't have the ability to go too high in other skills because parts of your brain are gone.

Silliest idea I've heard.

Re-spec... sounds like japanese car tuning or something.

Alright, then let me give some other reasons. Someone respecs to get awesome gear, enchanted, smithed to legendary using alchemy. They then respec and take the points out of smithing, enchanting, and alchemy to place in other areas. From a game dev point of view is that how you want your game to be played? Games are designed a certain way to be played a certain way, that's just common sense. Bethesda designed it to where you can not respec perks. If you don't like the devs decision then don't play their game. If though they were to add it, it should only ever be a one time thing. You can use it once, no more than once per character.

Regardless, Fallout and Skryim are two totally different games. Yes, same company but totally different.

For me, replay value invloves doing as much as I want with a game. Wheither that's going back and using cheats/mods etc or just messing around with the abilities I already have. And besides, this is a singleplayer game so obviously you should be allowed to do whatever you want. At least put the option there for people that want it and the people that don't will just do their own thing.
Play it however you want? I think not. You play it according to how the devs designed it. There are a lot of things they could add that people would use, but they can't cater to every person that post I want this and I want that. Don't like don't play it, but ultimately it's up to the devs to decide. You have no say.

To all the people saying you can choose not to use, well, you can choose not to play the game if you don't like the way the devs designed it.

I can imagine something like a re-spec option came up when the game was in development, but didn't make it into the game because it made the testers feel a bit dumb or cheap.

To go a step further. This argument of if you don't like it just don't use that feature really doesn't work. There has to be limits to what things are put into a game. Otherwise they should put laser rifles in and if you don't like it, just don't use them. Well that's just ridiculous isn't it.

I think Big Punisher is correct. The point of, if you don't like it don't play the game is as valid as if you don't like the feature don't use it.

I've never quite understood the desperate need for re-specialization as anything but a manifestation of OCD and a determined intent to indulge that OCD.

As another poster said, if you want things reversible, why stop at perks? Why not be able to freely move around skill points? Why not be able to shift around points between health, stamina and magic? Or, as was said before, un-kill people you killed? Bought something in-game and regret the purchase? Why not have an option to "undo" the sale, instead of just, you know, selling it back and accepting the loss of gold involved?
