Special dialouge for low intelligence characters

Post » Mon Mar 07, 2011 5:02 am

I would *love* for low intelligence dialogue to come back. However, if it was to come back, I'd like it if it weren't just for the "lulz". In the previous games, you really got dialogue that was basically "onga bonga, grrunk herrp derrrp". It'd be cool if there could be dialogue that was... well, just dumber than usual but not to the point where you're a caveman.

But old fallout had dump dialog too. Old fallouts 1&2 had 3 differend kind of conversations depended on intellidence. less that 4 intelligense, you could only talk "murr" "ugghhh" or something like that, but with 4 intelligence your characters talk like "me buy" "me head hurt" and stuff like that and intelligence 5 or better gives normal speech.

I don't know if it would be worth them wasting time on creating a whole other player experience just for low intelligence characters but it most definitely sounds amusing. I honestly wouldn't like the idea of quests being locked out though people should give you quests regardless if the rock next to you is more intelligent. It should just effect the results and rewards of the quests.

Yeah, stupid people can repair atomic power plant just as intelligent one too. Yeah! And dump people make good diplomaths too! And dump people understand tasks perfectly as intelligent one! So there is no point that low intelligence would not get all quests.

Suddenly i find myself thinking how amusing it would be to see an idiot try to defuse the bomb in megaton. I think after the resulting blast due to said stupidity you should either be dead or a roasted ghoul.

I think the appeal really lies more in replay value. I personally wouldn't create a low-int character for my first play-through, but seriously--anybody who has Fallout 2 and hasn't done it yet--do yourself a favor and give it a try! :P

I wouldn't mind them blocking off most of the side quests like in FO2 they should give you a series of quest line only dumb characters can do however. C&C is the key here. Don't want to miss out on side quest don't pick to be retarded in the beginning.

Well I know even if it were annoying as hell. I am reminded of the wacky antics of KOTOR 1. Anyone actually doing the repairs on the evil android the slow way would be laughing hysterically much of the game after meeting it.

As for the rest of you stupid MEATBAGS, GO PLAY THAT GAME ! lol

meatbags.....*giggles like homer simpson*

"Some people have evil spirits, you have stupid spirits"...Sulik

It was funny to play a dumb character for easter egg value in FO2 but if you wanted to make it easier on yourself you needed mentats as 90% of the game was off limits...

The fact that Torr seemed intelligent to the PC was about as cool as it got. Talking to Stuart little while stupid was fun also, I loved the "Your Name" option for stage name, reminded me of "Not Sure" from idiocracy...

Still I hope that there are more idiot savants that can give alternate ways to do quests which perhaps have MAJOR unintended consequences...

It would be a chance for the developers to mock the gamer's choice of a dumb character while letting the gamer laugh along at the moron-a-thon of events that unfold as a consequence of the PC's inability pick up on anything hapening around him (although the player is aware of it)...

And please, no more cheesy, one choice dialog options with cliche's like ME KILL YOOOO!!!!

Yeah, stupid people can repair atomic power plant just as intelligent one too. Yeah! And dump people make good diplomaths too! And dump people understand tasks perfectly as intelligent one! So there is no point that low intelligence would not get all quests.

Scenario 1: high int chr
Bar Owner: you look like a capable person, maybe you could help me out.
Bar Owner: some new people moved in to the building next door. I do not know what they are doing in there, but the stench that is coming form there is driving my customers away. If you can get rid of the stench I will give you a discount.
Player: You got your self a deal. *takes psychopath option and kill the Nabors*

Scenario 2: low int chr
Bar Owner: you look lime a strong lad, maybe you could help me out.
Bar Owner: the people next door did not pay their rent. I would throw them out my self but I have to stay and watch the bar. If you could do that for me I will give you some bottles for clean water.
Player: Sure. *try the evict Nabors, violence erupts and they die*

Same quest, same result. But different set ups. Of cause the smart chr will have more varied way to solve the quest with different outcome. But both can get the quest.

Not only do I support this, but if you have really low Charisma you'd only get options that would insult people; either deliberately or accidentally.

I'm really hoping Obsidian doesnt take the "Everyone can do everything" route that Fallout 3 took. It was entirely too easy to become proficient in damn near everything.

If you set your Intelligence at 1 so you can set your Strength to 9 there should be consequences. I mean if people are rated between 1 and 10 in Intelligence and you are rated a 1....how are you going to be able to have intelligent conversation? You're not.

If you handicap your character like that he should in fact be handicapped. If Charisma is at 1 guess what, people shouldnt like you. If Endurance is at one, not so shockingly you should die pretty quickly when things get hairy, if you have 1 in luck guess what you're not going to be winning many jackpots.

This whole "I don't want to be constrained let me do everything" phenomenon is going to be the death of meaningful gameplay.

I'm all for an Idiot Savant perk, only available to people with an Intelligence of 1-2.
"Your sheer stupidity is such that on occasion, you actually do something intelligent!" [Grants a random chance to critically succeed in any non-social skill check]

I approve of this perk/trait idea.

"Look, the sent me a MO-RON!" Enclave Officer...

One of the most frustrating things as a low-INT character in FO2 was the fact that Torr Buckner was about the only NPC in the game that would be your guide to things. It would be interesting if in at least 30% of the places there were some kind of dialog option like "Yeah, lookie here, another 'tard, say, why don't you talk to So_and_So...He speaks your language" whereupon you talk to the Low-IN guide and they actually seem like smart people and reasonable to you and open up possibilities of doing quests (although the quests would be mined at low-IN so that you could not get the best results, and may, in fact not be aware of how to get a decent result, thus your intervention wouldhave major unintended consequences)

Not everyone (or 90%) of people would necessarily dismiss you. Look at all the Fraud there is in this society concerning people with mental challenges or the elderly who suffer from ailments of the mind. A good deal of shady people in the wasteland would jump at the chance to exploit a not too bright PC for their own ends. I could see the PC unknowingly becoming a human bomb as he is tricked into doing what he thinks is a Fed-Ex quest and the whole challenge becomes finding someone who A) Realizes that you've been set up and B) Can help you or lead you with the bomb or lead you to someone who can C) Can figure out what it all means and take advantage of the situation. This could be one of the ways a low-IN character gets in god with one faction, pisses off another, all of while being a pawn in a larger game, where someone who had a clue IN>3-4 would maybee have a leg up and be on the path to being a "Made Guy" with a faction for the effort expended in a certain quest....

I'd love to see a low intelligence options in NV. Having special; dialogues, miniquests, and maybe a unique companion.
Just a n example of :

The Doctor: Without the positron stabilizer, the antimatter generator will create a matter-antimatter reaction making an explosion that's equal to a 20 megaton thermonuclear bomb. That's why I need you to get it before I can restart the generator. You'll recognize it by the electromagnetic array, it looks like a series of tubes surrounding a metal cylinder,
PC(normal INT): Easy, I'll be right back with it!
Pc (Lower then 3 INT): A popsicle stable, for a magnum? Wait what was it again?
The Doctor: ... Here's a picture of it , let me pin it to your shirt. (picture added to inventory)

What about having all the same quests, but getting different rewards for low intelligence.

If you're that dumb, you may find that you are quite satisfied with the rubber ducky you've just been given for doing that mission, rather than the money you'd normally get. :P

It'd be nice, but in practice it would mean spending a lot of time and money rewriting and voicing quite a lot of dialogue, so I'd rather leave it out and concentrate on improving normal dialogue.

And with hight INT you'd say something really eggheadish :)
PC: "Yeah, I know what that is. It's a [blah blah] used for [blah blah]. Are you sure you can use it though without a [blah blah] or should I try and find that aswell?
Doctor: *stands in awe*

Replace [blah blah] with science stuff. You could say that I'm around 5 INT in real life so... I couldn't make up anything good ;)

So basically there should be three different dialogue options:
One for dumb characters,
one for intelligent characters,
and one for "Average Joe"-characters.

Edit: And if one has not watched Idiocracy then one should watch it! Could inspire you how Low-intelligence characters would be like.

Not sure about egghead responses.

It's kind of assumed that if you have the skill or perk you get the appropriate dialogue in a fitting way, so Science responses are nerdy, Small Guns are vaguely gung-ho etc.

Ok, so High Science gives you nerdy dialogue options and High Intelligence gives you smart dialogue options (doesn't have to be anything related to science. It can be "survival smart" and stuff like that)

Maybe there could be limits on skills a low INT character could take--or at least a handicap (re: Science, Doctor).

I like that idea, but i highly doubt they'll go from being able to do, see and be everything in Fallout 3 to such limitations (no matter how logical) in New Vegas.

That'd make an awesome aspect of hardcoe mode though

True, true. A guy can dream though, can't he?

Yeah--I really wonder just how "hardcoe" this hardcoe mode is really going to be though. Right now it just sounds like "Normal Circa 1990-2003 Mode".

I'm really really (censored)ing really hoping that hardcoe mode will be Modular. If it is they could add a lot of stuff that most people (who were introduced to this universe via Fallout 3) wouldn't want and those who didn't like the sound of it could just not click that button on.

I like the three prong idea. One for Low-INT, one for Med-INT and one for High-INT.

Quest to fix the Well.

Low-INT - The Well is not working go see if you can dig it deeper and find more water.
Med-INT - The Well is not working go see if you can dig the well deeper and maybe check on the well pump and see if it needs a new filter.
High-INT - The Well is not working go see if it needs a new pump and replace it or repair it has needed.

All quests should provided the same EXP for completion but perhaps varying rewards depening on Perks or Skills are involved (Barter for example). Remember that Low-INT characters would not have some Perks or Skills.

I highly doubt there will be much of a middle ground. I think there are many (32 pages of the FWE mod? I mean, that's amazing!) people who want a deeper challenge and many who just simply don't. I don't even think they'd need to pick and choose things as if it were a display configuration. Personally, I love feeling like I've just been dropped into something with no hand-holding--but I also grew up in a generation where PC games almost only gave us that. When I was a younger lad we went from Zork to Myst to Sanitarium to Fallout to Planescape--man those were the days. Even as a little kid I remember loving the struggle of the C64 game Robinson Crusoe.

SIGH.
