Special dialouge for low intelligence characters

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:08 pm

I remember buying Fallout 1 thinking (and this is pretty much my exact thought) "Oh awesome! Diablo with Guns!" Then i died seconds after leaving the vault. In true man fashion I didn't crack the manual at all and failed miserably at combat. Same thing happened in Morrowind too basically. I got whatever it is you got when you started (virtually nothing) then started running North West and got killed pretty quickly.

I really only want hardcoe mode to be modular so that they can add in some of the more hardcoe ideas without off putting too many casual gamers. My favorite parts of Fallout 1/2/3 were always when i was struggling. Continually running out of ammo, running from fights...i remember i had to reload this one encounter when i was coming out from a tunnel (right outside Rivet City) and got mobbed by 4 (i think) Talon Company Mercs. That was my first encounter with them, i was low on ammo, low on stimps, and bloody eager to get back to civilization. Repetitive, annoying, and incredibly rewarding when i stood over their corpses looted all their stuff and limped across that bridge.

*edit for off topicness*

Also I'd like some imbecile speech options for my big dumb Caesar's Legion guy. Still haven't decided if he'll use Heavy Weapons primarily or Hand to hand and Melee. Maybe even just a Tommy Gun if its in

Some of my fondest memories of the the first two fallouts was low intelligent dialogue, and also the text box in the left hand corner.

That would be great, it was hilarious in the originals.

That text box is hands-down one of the all-time greatest examples of video-game excellence in the history of the medium. I've never seen anything like it before or after and probably never will again.

This is not low intelligent dialogue, but it some of my favorites lines from fallout 1.

The Lieutenant: Now what do we have here? I've been told you wish to divulge information of the utmost importance. I do hope so.
Vault Dweller: On one condition.
The Lieutenant: Conditions? How delightful. Go ahead, amuse me with your... condition.
Vault Dweller: Put a bag over your head so I can stand being in your presence.

That one was great, I usually got there by talking to Harry while heavily armed and armored. Harry was, to me, what a dumb PC should be like...
(this is my rendition from memory, so forgive me for messing up the exact lines)

Harry: Hey, you no look like Ghoul..
PC: But I AM a Ghoul! I dressed up extra snazzy today!
Harry: That's snazzy, huh?

We know about "hardcoe mode" .
But if you were to operate with a low IQ character it would be "tardcore mode" .
Having to battle with a retarded character in the wasteland and desert.

Just because he's a little slow doesn't mean he can't fight. A low intelligence character could be like... Jayne in Firefly. Well, he's not a total [censored]-up but he ain't too bright either.

The 3 dialouge options (low, mid, high) sounds like a really good idea.
Hmmm ... But I hope they include some low IN dialouge options - even F03 hade some.

I think staring off into space drooling on yourself deserves a certain kind of respect :P

I would LOVE to see some sort of mild reference to the classic Fallout 2 line of Cake and Ice Cream :disguise:

I may be wrong, but I swear J.E Sawyer or another dev said there would be special dialogue options for low Intelligence characters. He said it wouldn't be the caveman stuff like in F1 & 2, but your character would miss the point on many occasions, and say things that wouldn't really make sense. If I recall correctly, the dev said some characters would be annoyed at this, but others would find it funny, therefore increasing their liking towards you.

I don't think that your Itelligence should hinder your ability to complete quests but I would like people to treat you somewhat differently due to your Itelligence.

What do you mean? like people referring to you as dumbo?

At the very least I'd like 'intelligent' [intelligence] dialogue options. In Fallout 3 your character can make very simple statements like 'Did you test it on a smaller scale first?' or 'So you're fighting the good fight with your voice' or something like that and then everyone is like 'woah that's smart you must be a scientist or something'.

I'm really hoping Obsidian doesnt take the "Everyone can do everything" route that Fallout 3 took. It was entirely too easy to become proficient in damn near everything.

If you set your Intelligence at 1 so you can set your Strength to 9 there should be consequences. I mean if people are rated between 1 and 10 in Intelligence and you are rated a 1....how are you going to be able to have intelligent conversation? You're not.

If you handicap your character like that he should in fact be handicapped. If Charisma is at 1 guess what, people shouldnt like you. If Endurance is at one, not so shockingly you should die pretty quickly when things get hairy, if you have 1 in luck guess what you're not going to be winning many jackpots.

This whole "I don't want to be constrained let me do everything" phenomenon is going to be the death of meaningful gameplay.

I cant agree with this more, it's a valid point ( hits the nail on the head in my view ).
I saw in one of the interviews with the devs, that the game is big & that it encourages you to do multiple play throughs ( which 90% of us if not more is going to do anyway ).
There maybe quests that require a more intelligent person & if you have low intelligence ,it should limit you or stop you from doing so. ( just like in real life ).
If you are willing to put more points in a certain stat & take them from another there should be a knock-on effect for that, seems fair to me.
I want to be able to survive with the specific skills i've chosen. after all not everyone is good at everything,we all have weaknesses.
And i do NOT want to be a super hero or have super hero status, in a game that is based on survival in my opinion.
It would make the game way more interesting in my view :)

If we get special quests and dialogue for being dumb I want my character who has 10int to turn round and say "you know what screw you I'm smarter then you so I won't be doing what you want anymore"

Nah, I read that somewhere too. Pretty pleased about it since it'll add a whole lot of depth to the game.

My characters always had high intelligence and I always loved having those nice little [Intelligence] speech options when I talked to folks so I look forward to hopefully some expanding on that. (Even having those for low Intelligence would funny as hell)
