steam midnight unlock

Post » Sat Mar 05, 2011 1:17 am

I know a lot of you like Steam, but what if something happened to the internet where we could never log back on what would we do then? We would have a bunch of games that we could never play again sitting on our hard drives. I'm probably off topic but that thought just came to me.

If the game is up to date you can still play in offline mode - but some saves may be invalid due to DLC - and achievements may not be recorded but you can still essentially play the game.

So angry right now might try and get some sleep what a waste of a night.

I know that, but you still need to be connected to even access offline mode. That wasn't my point, I was just saying we'd all be screwed if something happened where we could never access Steam again. Also I don't keep a ton of games installed on my hard drive so if something happened where we could never get back on Steam then I wouldn't be able to install the games because they need authentication.

For people curious why it isn't midnight across the board, it might be. I remember with the Metro 2033 unlock on steam it was set for midnight PST, but a couple hours from EST midnight my timer changed to show it unlocking at midnight EST (which it did). So it might be 3am or turn out to be midnight, just wait until it gets closer to the time.

As does everyone else not on the American Continents, this is not new news it has been known for many many months now.

Yet once again if you are outside America you are a 2nd class person who gets nothing even though you buy the digital copy and all it takes is someone clicking an option and Steam activating it.

How hard is it to activate all digital copies at the same time instead of leaving it until the physical copies hit the shelves? It isn't a MMO game so being able to play a couple days earlier is not going to give us an advantage some how?

I pre-ordered and have pre-loaded the game so as not to help overload the Steam servers but since I am an Australian I have to wait a further 3 days just because someone decided that it would be better that way.

Exactly my thoughts, I am so pissed!
Pre ordered the game from Steam with the only reason, because of the date. I decided to pay 15 more euros, because I wanted to be able to play on 19.
If I knew it will be released 3 days later, I would wait for a boxed version from my local stores.
So at the end I pay more, wait more and the sad thing is I have the actual game on my PC, but should wait 3 more days...

Sure, I can help you out. Thank God Valve is so good at game development, because they svck at time keeping. People in Australia using Steam are seeing a countdown clock on the store page showing only 4 hours to go, even though their version shouldn't unlock until 12 AM on the 22nd, while those of us in the US, where it is supposed to unlock at midnight tonight, are all showing different times until the unlock, but none of those times are midnight.

If Valve follows previous behavior, they will wait until the Steampowered forums for Fallout are full of threads and posts about people nervously pulling their hair out as midnight approaches and the clock is still showing unlock at noon or late the next day. This will continue until 1-2 hours before midnight, when Valve employees will seemingly notice this for the first time, and set the countdown clock to show the time it should have shown all along.

Valve will then proceed to muddle up all time measurements on the next major release on Steam, putting everyone through needless worrying and speculation all over again.

Maybe we should just mail Valve a truckload of watches and calendars or something. Seems they need them for their releases as well.

Hahaha :banghead:

WHAT IF THE INTERWEBS VANISHED HOW WOULD WE PLAY GAMES lmfao

I think if the Internet ceased to exist today (which is just ludicrous) we would have bigger issues than how you would play your video games.

But don't worry, your "what if" scenario is just as likely as the human civilization being wiped out by a meteor or visited publicly by aliens.

That being the case I would say your odds are pretty good you will not have to worry about this lol

Wasn't known to quite a few people, as last night steam said 4 hours. Wake up this morning a little earlier to see what it's like before work, and I'm greeted by a message saying it's 3 days until it unlocks.

First the $90 price tag even though our dollar is at 1:1 with the US, but now this? Uuuugh, bullsh!t.

That was an error on Steams part, as has been said several times already today. Prior to that every single press release from Obsidian and/or Bethesda that I've read has said 19th in the US and 22nd everywhere else.

Okay so the question begs to be asked.... why in god's name is Valve so bad with time? I mean I saw some post by another member on here, directly linking to a page at Valve's website about their notorious "Valve time."

I mean, they acknowledge that they have a problem obviously, but why the hell not fix it? Why continue to convince the world that Valve doesn't/can't operate clocks? Certainly doesn't help your reputation...

Living in Australia and trying to follow release dates is next to impossible. They're constantly changed, shifted, removed, and sometimes even delayed on release day for a week or two without warning. Steam has seemed to be the only place where Aussies can be sure a release date is correct, but not this time.

It's just disappointing how often we get screwed over with these things, as a lot of Aussies will tell you.

Yeah. FO:NV is US$89.95 on Steam at the moment for Australians while the US customers are only paying US$49.99. And since the Aussie dollar is so strong and at parity with the US we are paying 80% more for the same game.

Lets see now since i live in europe i have payed 49.99 Euro it means i payed 97.50 Leva in my local curency even tho my country did not switch to euro yet if i buy it from a local retail store im going to get it for 69-7 = 62 Leva for a non digital boxed version and if i pay in dollars it would be bout 70 leva for a digital copy. Wich means steam is skining european players more for the games digital version than its worth in retail store and yet you are suposed to get the product the same day as retailer store they even deliver it at your door for no extra charge whats the point of buying it thru steam if boxed version cost less !
Also another thing to mention is due to the high traffic and poor steam server managment you probably not gonna get good download speed the first 24 hours after release so its going to download slowly with probable disconnects !

As for steam Valve might wana reconsider some of the prices in Euro cause some countries in europe have no better income than those listed before and yet they are forced to pay in euro even if not in Eu!

Could be that they view it as a status thing. Very few companies have the money, resources, and following to be able to ignore deadlines and tell gamers they will "get it when it's done".

Off the top of my head, I'd say the only others Blizzard, and previously 3D Realms. (Telling people "it will be done when it is done" for 12 years obviously removes the all important "money" and "resources" from the equation and strips you of your status.

Steam provides enough constant revenue for Valve, like WOW does for Blizzard, that they can pretty well set their own schedule and not worry about having enough money in their paychecks come payday because they haven't released product in forever.

I have to give honor where it is due however, and say that Valve has some of the best post game support and free content delivered on a constant basis, easily keeping them in the running for being one of my favorite developers. (Guess who the other two are! :fallout: ) It's like a family member or a friend that you really love and care about, but they have one super annoying habit that drives you to distraction.

I really do think it would be funny to bombard Valve with watches and calendars through the mail. Each with a little attached tag reading "Where is Ep. 3?" :poke:

Heh, I was expecting it not unlock for me last night. Officially unlocked on the 22nd is unacceptably annoying. Though using a VPN I can convince Steam I'm in the US and get the game to unlock this afternoon.
