That furry thread

..but the deviation from the normal sixuality statistics is clear; homosixuality is a lot more common among furries than normal society. I've always kinda wondered why? Lets not answer that, actually, I can only imagine bigoted and biased answers.

Meh I'll give it a try either way..

Chances are that it's how the media and/or current pop culture seems to 'look down' on homosixuality. Big media does it? The herd follows suit. Genuine homosixuals would then deny their true sixuality, in order to avoid potential hate and harassment. When under the shield of being anonymous, they won't have to hold back on anything which is why the stats would be different.

Stranger yet, a search of "gay" on FurAffinity brings 78765 results, whereas a search of "straight" brings 36872 results.

It's just mind-boggling to me that heterosixuality could be the majority sixuality in the fandom, and there be more than twice as much art content in relation to gay males/females than straight males and females.
I imagine it's likely that for many "straight" artists, it doesn't occur to them to mark it as such. It's usually the case that the majority assumes that those around them are in the same group, or will already know/assume that they are in that group. People will say "PS I'm gay" or whatever because it's still "a thing". Unless they just did something that implies otherwise, I never really see anyone specify "PS, I'm straight".

There's also the factor of people who are "unsure", or experimenting, or whatever. There's an unfair/insulting stereotype that bisixuals just haven't decided yet instead of it being a real orientation, but there are many people out there who aren't sure of themselves, or jump to conclusions about their own feelings, etc., as it's a confusing time for many. It's possible that these people will kind of throw themselves into groups that are more "out there", and give the furry fandom an inordinately high representation of those people.

Both of these sound more plausible to me.

Yeah, I can understand that.

It'd be nicer to see ages attached to the identified sixualities, I suppose. Though it might be insulting as well, we could look and see how many of the younger people identify versus the older (who presumably know themselves better).

As for the bolded, I have to admit that gets on my nerves so much, for some reason much more so when gay men/women claim bisixuals are just gay men/women who are too afraid to come out of the closet. sixuality's still a spectrum, it's not black and white [/rant]

I'm generally all for discussions like this, but perhaps this one might be better in a PM thing.

I figure at some point in the future I might attend some cons, or meets at the least but I'll need to work myself up to them, as well as bring like four friends along so I have stuff to hide behind in crowds

The idea of going to cons really intrigues me, but they scare me a little too. I'm not afraid I'm going to run into a creepy rapist furry or anything ( ), but I have mild agoraphobia, so any crowd situation always scares me, compounded by the fact I'm not normally one who goes out and parties, and that's the only way I've had cons described to me.

They really are a whole lot of fun. It's pretty crazy the changes that happen in Pittsburgh during Anthrocon. :)

Good idea, that arm of the discussion was veering off into territory that would probably end up in problem thread territory.

Wow, this is a very nice documentary. I like.

Ha, Uncle Kage is in there. <3

Also, I just got back from Furry Connection North - wow that was a great con. Lots of fun, lots of furries, lots of booze. :P

I even got to introduce some new friends to the furry fandom, which was pretty awesome in itself, just seeing their reactions and whatnot. :)

I really didn't know what a Furry was before I read through this thread, so had no pre-conceptions.

....and that documentary was a really interesting watch, although it's not something I'd ever have any interest in myself.

Certainly the Dr. was a very intriguing chap.

If everyone thought like that we could have avoided few wars. And innumerable internet arguments :hehe:

Hey, them Russians tried to make http://www.michaeldnelson.com/images/stills/22_StalinApe2.jpg

Now if America can make some genetically altered http://images.wikia.com/fallout/images/1/17/DeathclawCA.jpg

Well that would be a war only a mad geneticist could admire.

I'm impressed - a video that doesn't make them all seem like a bunch of mentally challenged children. I wonder why so many people seem to hate these furries?
To me it doesn't seem that much different from roleplaying, and nobody seems to mind roleplayers? (Maybe I used the wrong term here, I'm not a native English speaker)

That is a nice documentary, and it does well to show the fandom as just normal people with a specific interest.

I think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Htq3FwZ1mw8, however, does a good job of explaining how someone on the outside of the fandom perceives it, even with an open mind.

Oh geez. I had forgotten about that "documentary." Granted, there are (obviously) furries like that within the fandom, no doubt, but that sort of thing isn't generally considered representative of the entire furry fandom, just like the people with body pillows of Rei Ayanami don't represent, say, anime fandom.

You have to turn the AC way up when they're around. ;)

Humans seem hardwired to distrust groups they don't understand. I consider myself a pretty open-minded person and I can usually participate in conversations across wide religious and political spectrums - but I'll admit even I get unnecessarily wary about some groups. Thankfully I tend to be good at recognizing this fact.

Also, if someone doesn't understand a group or community there is a good chance their opinions will be formed by the most extreme members, as they're usually the most recognizable. So someone who reads webcomics with anthropomorphic animals and draws pictures of their own will be entirely eclipsed by someone in a fursuit who believes they are a reincarnated tiger. I could go into more detail but it would involve topics that aren't appropriate for the forums.

Yeah, it'd be nice if there was a "Mature" board with slightly less restrictions, Still no expliciet images and such, but allowing mature discussions about manners such as these.
This board would, I imagine only be accessible to those who contact moderators, or if that's too much work, have over 50 posts and tick a box in the profile settings to allow the viewing of this.

In the latter case, that does not solve the problems that justify banning certain topics from discussion (flame wars over politics, for example, are easily perpetuated by regular posters). In the former, it would create elitist attitudes in certain segments of the forum population.
