I need Hardware acceleration disabled for a game, otherwise it won't run smoothly. Is it possible to use a .bat file to disable/lower hardware acceleration and starting a game, and then when exiting the game turn hardware acceleration back to normal? I guess it's defined in the registry somewhere... But I don't know much about creating batches. Can anyone help?

I recently picked up Hearts of Iron III. I have Windows 7 on my computer, in case that has any impact on help people can offer me. I put in the disk for HOI3 and (since I have AutoPlay disabled) went to My Computer to start it. I double clicked on the icon, and waited a while. The green loading bar on the top of the window never reached the end, so I tried to close My Computer, at which point it became unresponsive. I ejected the disk and tried again, this time right clicking on the icon instead of double clicking. I hit 'Install or run program from your media'. After a brief period of what looked like loading, nothing happened. I also tried going to Run and typing 'D:\Setup.exe', but that didn't work either. I'm at a loss. Anyone with ideas?

Quick question, can I install mods to the Steam version of GTA:IV?
Edit: I know now that I can, but when I try to use any .asi script mods they won't work.

This one is an oddity that has been eating at my time at work.

We have two of these quite old cameras. They have USB transfer options, which recently I have been given the task of setting up. One of them I was able to set up just fine. It is a bit archaic, the method, but it works. I had to copy some driver files from a CD over to %Windir%\system32\drivers and %windir%\twain_32 in order to get them to recognize it, followed by using the hardware wizard to finish setup to get them functioning.

The other one, however, is refusing to cooperate. I did the same things, it would correctly recognize it when I reboot, proceeded through the wizard installation, and it would work... but only for the first transfer. After that it disappears from the Devices list and USB transfer will fail with an error (USB connection error is all the message says)

The first PC is Windows XP Pro SP2 (now SP3)

The second PC is Windows XP Tablet edition SP2 (rolled back from SP3 after encountering the issue, didn't solve it :()

Also, I can't recall with the first one, but the second one complained about unsigned drivers, could an update for signed drivers that the other one didn't have be causing the issue? Maybe that it is a tablet PC version of Windows XP?

Things I have tried: reinstalling the device (many times), adding registry entries related to the device from the other one that are non-USB port specific.

I will be calling them (the company that made the cameras and drivers) up again today, they weren't very helpful the first time, so if anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.

Edit: oh, I also eliminated it being a problem with the other camera. Works perfectly fine with a netbook, which is the temporary solution.

Well, never thought I'd pop in here. Still, since I frequent these forums firsthand instead of any Major Geeks or whatnot, thought I could give it a go.

I've been having a bit of a peculiar problem with my computer for a while. As I start her up, it's not alltogether uncommon that on the first time each day on startup, the computer freezes at the http://www.techvivo.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/windowsxpsplashscreen.jpg. After shutting her down and starting her up again, I get the usual 'computer was shut down inna wrong way' and the thirty second counter running whilst having the choice of starting in safe mode...Still. I thought this might've had something to do with air humidity at first (I got bad ventilation), then I got whiff of problems with my RAM which practically knocked out my computer 'till the part was removed...but the problem persisted, so unlike I thought, it wasn't the faulty RAM that was causing this, or the humidity at morning from showering.

So, now I got to thinking it might be time to fix this thing up, just in case it gets worse. I tried running checkdisk and defragmented the C:/ drive, no avail. I'm guessing, after some light reading, that it might actually have something to do with the new setup of parts I bought last April. Problem is, I haven't the foggiest on how to start checking, or if there's a sensible way of doing it without trying to remove the parts in question, since I don't have any to replace 'em so's as to try out by that process of elimination. I'm quite sure I got my graphics card drivers all installed right, but y'never know. *Sigh* Still. Any help would be appriciated.

To re-iterate: I get computer freezes pretty much every day for the first startup of the day, after which the thing purrs and runs smoothly as a mechanical kitten.

I've got http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CLI51M/ref%3Dasc_df_B001CLI51M985089/%3Ftag%3Daskcomel-20%26creative%3D380333%26creativeASIN%3DB001CLI51M%26linkCode%3Dasn craptop, and it svcks. I've had it for about a year and a half and its always had a problem with heat. Now if its on for more than maybe 15-30 minutes it will shut down. Its got to be because of the heat...

I'm no-clue suzy when it comes to laptops, so I'm gonna try to get a nice cheap tower to replace it.

The budget is low, of course, and I just want something that comes with a mouse and a keyboard. I've got the monitor. Been looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227182 since it actually seems to have a decent power supply, but its out of my price range. I need it to last and also be able to handle a lot.

EDIT: @olaf, if you're worried about drivers, try checking the driver details in your Device Manager.

Not really tech but tech related. I've downloaded DDS Converter 2.1 to convert PSD files to DDS files but the DDS Converter doesn't let me select a file to convert. I'm using Win7 x64 if that helps

Edit: Fixed. (I think) Downloaded a converter plug-in for the gimp on the F3Nexus

Is the newest Nvidia mobile driver safe to use? I remember awhile ago that people recommended against using the drivers because it didn't work well with Oblivion. Is this still an issue?

I got a problem..... sorta. A few minutes ago I installed the latest drivers for my HD 4350. The first time I tried to install them, my computer BSOD. This was the first time this has happened. So once windows booted up again, I re-downloaded the drivers, and this time they installed fine. I played DAO for like 10 minutes, and everything seems fine. So then I go boot up GTA San Andreas through Steam, and as soon as it loads and I start to play, it immediately freezes. I've tried 5 times, everytime it freezes. It worked fine earlier today.... I'm just confused here. Any ideas?

Well.... If I were in your position I would just not shut my computer down for a while. Other than that, I have no solid advice.

If that tower is out of your price range, you should consider building your own since it is cheaper.

What would you do?

I've got an EVGA GTX 260 (216). I haven't been gaming very much lately and the most demanding games I have are Oblivion, Fallout 3, LotRO and WoW. Considering that and the cards from Nvidia on the horizon (and ATI's HD 5000 cards), should I eBay it? I should be able to get a fair price for it - its been lightly used for about five months. I'm thinking $125-$150.

I really shouldn't have bought it considering my games and the fact I have a perfectly good 8800 GTX - kind of a waste of money for so little performance gain. So, should I keep it or sell it whilst I can?

I've been looking to buy some turtle beaches for my 360. That'd be cool if they would be compatible with my pc and 360 also. My budget is around 60-100 bucks. Thanks guys.

I'm pretty sure most games have hardware acceleration in their .ini files. Try turning it off there.

Hey, what programs would you guys recommend for uninstalling a program in such a way that it makes it seem as if it was never installed? You know, uninstalling everything, including registry files. I just want to be thorough, I'm tired of programs leaving stuff behind when I uninstall them.

A question about Crossfire: While it says its enabled in the catalyst control center on my 4890s it doesnt show it in my dxdiag. I have noticed other people have both cards in the dxdiag. It should have both cards being seen in my dxdiag correct? But it shows them enabled and controllable in the CCC.
Here is my dxdiag

I believe the secondary (linked) adapter is disabled in ATI crossfire in 2D enviroments like the Windows desktop so dxdiag doesn't recognize it as a "graphics adapter".
SLI may handle it differently, as its controlled by the driver.

Both cards are recognized by Windows:
Name: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series Device ID: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9460&SUBSYS_20071787&REV_00\4&E8F8674&0&0010 Driver: n/a
Name: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series Device ID: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9460&SUBSYS_20071787&REV_00\4&341B6335&0&0018 Driver: n/a

However, you should be driver information there. Do you have your chipset drives loaded. If you motherboard has a AMD/ATI chipset then drivers are available but are difficult to find.
Go here: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx , navigate to Motherboard/Integrated Video Drivers (click the +). Then click under Individual Drivers (Motherboard/Chipset). Now you can download the South Bridge driver individually, and also get a RAID/AHCI driver. Windows 7 may come with a AHCI driver but it svcks.

edit: Nevermind its because you posted the 32-bit version of Dxdiag.
